Currently going through my first dose of the virus and the one symptom which has got me confused is the massive red rash all over me, like I’ve rolled in a bed of nettles, any ideas of how to control the itching?
Got any hayfever pills? - antihistamines might take the edge off.
If you speak to your doc you may be able to get a prescription for steroid cream and find a local pharmacy which will drop it up to you.
Cold damp towel and for the love of God don't scratch it is the only other advice I can offer.
She comes on here with her sincerely held opinion
Agreed 100%.
Others are trolling, on an issue they know will elicit a strong response due to the effect the pandemic has had on so many people. The difference is clear. Disaster trolling shouldn’t be quietly accepted. Call it out. Or better still, delete it.
elicit (verb)
evoke or draw out (a reaction, answer, or fact) from someone.
Thanks teach. That’s going to get old very fast though.
Or boring brainwashed people calling others out.
Jeepers
Ive not been on this thread for a while. It used to be very informative. Now its been wrecked by some folk who don't understand science and some outright trolls. Well done
As far as I am aware none of the actual science around covid is in any way controversial. Its all well known stuff. Any dissension is NOT based on any real science but either conspiracy theorists or opportunists pushing their own agenda
As for the false information not having any consequences - utter rubbish. Its caused deaths by giving folk a reason not to be vaccinated and thus creating a pool of hosts for the infection to spread
Thanks teach. That’s going to get old very fast though.
I do agonise over it. I know there is a dyslexic community and so don't like to correct spelling errors, but when the wrong word, particularly a homophone, is used, I do see it as 'educating' if you like. Even more if the selection of word is a complex word (eg: you could have just said 'to get a response' but that's another bit of a crusade of mine, particularly as 75% of my team at work are non-native speakers I've had to rethink my own writing style) or a semi-legal term like defamation vs deformation.
It's not meant to be a sneer, but in the same way as if someone misadvises how to adjust a headset or whatever, we'll happily correct technical knowledge and hopefully everyone knows a bit more after, is it that different?
Anyway, thread tangent over.
Thing is, it isn’t work, it’s just quick posts mainly made on mobile devices that auto correct incorrectly. Often. But having said that, it can be useful at times, so keep on… perhaps just be sparing with your help. One per a page perhaps? 🙃
Wish this forum had an Alex Jones member ignore function, there's a time and a place for spouting rubbish, but within a thread about potential long term illness and even death is not one of them.
Strange isn't it how the ones promoting conspiracy theories say WE are the ones being brainwashed.
why would E-L-I ..... autocomplete or autocorrect to I-L-L though? Elect maybe? Or an E-L-E.... word I could see.
Genuine interest, starting to work with a team looking at AI and ML and spell and word checking is a simple version of that - but maybe I'll start another thread. Or do my own research.
Ellicit is autocorrect to I’ll on my device.
Ha! It messed that up! Should be…
“Ellicit is autocorrected to illicit on my device.”
looking at AI and ML and spell and word checking is a simple version of that
Sounds like an interesting project. Presumably there are already teams working on this kind of thing in companies like Google and Apple? If not, there should be. I’ll posit the hypothesis that this is exactly the kind of mistake that ML embeds rather than remedies, which is why it isn’t AI, it’s powerful but dumb. Anyway, yes, another thread…
makes sense, ta. Now I'm a bit cleverer too, that's today's objective met.
But you should have said 'to get a response' anyway, to satisfy my plain English itch 😉
Sounds too American to me, and doesn’t have the same specificity of meaning. Right, need to get myself another coffee…
Whilst I have disagreed with pretty much everything CG has ever said about covid, I don’t think the 2 are comparable
She comes on here with her sincerely held opinion and that’s fair enough even if most think it’s nonsense. She is also from what I can see a pretty regular contributor to numerous other threads
Fair. My Apologies to CG.
I was annoyed I couldn't go to the pub due to the aledgedly non existent virus.
Good shout actually as still feeling properly ropey today.
Presumably there are already teams working on this kind of thing in companies like Google and Apple?
Yes, lots. But we're more specifically looking at trustworthy ML. Most ML, as we sort of see above is black boxy, the machine doesn't / can't explain why it makes the decisions / conclusions it does. Working in a metrology lab, we're looking both at AI/ML to improve data analysis and understanding, but also how to measure the accuracy of AI/ML.
Old webinar but a useful explanation

and more depth
anyway - covid deniers, cah!
Thanks Martin, waiting for the out of hours GP to call as that's who 111 referred me to, waiting for the piriton to kick in!
Do you have someone looking after you? Or at least that can check up on you? Shingles isn’t fun, if it is that.
Thanks for the links Jon.
Kelvin, I do but she's got Covid too! I don't think its shingles as it looks like urticaria https://www.yourcovidrecovery.nhs.uk/post-hospital/effects-on-your-body/skin-problems/
I just hope it doesn't last months 😳
As for the false information not having any consequences – utter rubbish.
Yup, someone posted earlier on the very significant differences in covid related deaths between Republican and Democrat supporters, which says it all really.
However quoting Voltaire's opinions of the medical profession a few hundred years ago, or denying that diseases can be infectious, is highly unlikely to have any effect on the average STWer beyond revealing to them just how daft covid conspiracy theorists are.
the biggest take from the paper that article was based on was the divergence in the Deaths (between GOP & Dems) didn't start until the mass distribution vaccines.
Overall, our results suggest that political party affiliation only became a substantial risk
factor in Ohio and Florida after vaccines were widely available.
First Saturday club ride since covid. And that’s my covid in April 2020. Mornings are not great but got around 80km with the middle group. Feeling it now though. Legs are sore but chest a bit achey too. First group ride on gears too (normally fixed). I’ve done a few evening club rides too.
Covid has left me not a mornings person!
Skepticism is healthy, and scientists can be very skeptical. Disinformation is dangerous. With some prominent examples of people who have suffered unnecessarily due to their choices.
Just rolling past week 2 of feeling rough. Managed 7 days after testing positive still WFH as felt 'reasonable. Roll on last 3 days and went downhill raidly. Coughing and couldn't breath. Gasping going upstairs. Stayed in bed late last 3 days as haven't slept. Can't say it's improving much, got some taste and smell back, but very wheezy. I'm likely to be back in the office next week, but not till I do a test. Not even thinking of riding as I usually cycle commute - I'll take the car for a week or two.
This is, however, exactly as I was in December 19 - I'd had two colleagues come back from Woohan !

So, if the theory of diseases being infectious is correct (now debatable from what I’ve learned in last 24 hrs), pretty much you would have been the UK’s patient zero and the last 2 years have all been your fault..??
😉

Not sure if my sarcasm has gone over your head there TJ or whether yours has gone over mine!!😂

That's good to hear, even if you're not quite back to normal. The hidden burden of long covid on individuals, the NHS, and the wider economy, will be significant for years to come.
Yeah, that’s fair enough to a degree, BUT….. the opinion of a poster in a debate (however skewed you may believe that to be) has been silenced in the way of a snooze for a little while, yet the ones actually dishing out abuse have been ‘told’ via a post in the thread? Surely you can see the issue here?
Others were moderated too, warnings handed out. The idea of the broadcast was to stop anymore to make life easier for us. Sadly didn’t go to plan.
VR was given a break for their behaviour not their views.
Not sure if my sarcasm has gone over your head there TJ
Whooshed right over me - Do'h

Yep, good to hear you're making progress.
Did a club ride the other weekend. Me and another guy both finding it harder work than it should be after Covid, and one of the other riders, who has podiumed at national level, is part of a long Covid study and has been restricted to Zone 2 riding for 8 months now.
That’s good to hear, even if you’re not quite back to normal.
I am hoping titanium is a cure for long covid. Bought a new bike to help with recovery. Fixed wheel Enigma Echo. The clue is in the username.
VR was given a break for their behaviour not their views.
But you know they're going to come back triumphantly squealing about free speech and censorship, of course.
ASTR - I referred to VR as he/she/it on the basis I had no way of determining if the posts were emanating from a male, a female or a bot so I covered all the options.
As for VR taking a short break, it should be a long break - but I'm not a mod.

A permanent break really. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but not a platform to express them. As others have said the absolute rubbish he and a couple of others were spouting have negative consequences. There are vulnerable people who see such nonsense as validation of their own ill thought out opinions. People have died who didn't have to because of this anti vaccination BS.
There are vulnerable people who see such nonsense as validation of their own ill thought out opinions.
Well it gives you a perfect opportunity to challenge their nonsense. I don't understand the need to rush to permanently ban people.
I don't for a minute believe that veganrider changed the mind of one single person on here, other than convince them even more how daft covid deniers/conspiracy theorists are.
There was nothing actually offensive with vegan rider's claims such as that infectious diseases and viruses don't exist, what imo was challenging about his/her behaviour was the sheer avalanche of nonsense which ended up completely overwhelming the thread.
As previously claimed by Drac it was veganriders behaviour that got him/her a ban, not their beliefs. Which seems perfectly fair to me.
I think everyone should have the right to say that viruses don't exist, for example, if that's what they believe, especially when it can be challenged. Veganrider wasn't making the claim in a environment where there was no chance that it would be challenged.
Quite. But doing the equivalent of sticking their fingers in their ears when confronted and shit-posting with a high repetition rate got them unpopular real quick.
Writing style and basic standpoints had more than a little in common with the person who used to sporadically register as a new user and post about lockdowns killing people, no such thing as COVID, it's all a big plot etc. etc until the inevitable ban or posting porn before the inevitable ban.
I think you left off the images too 😉
I’m always happy to debate. The science is more interesting than the conspiracy theories and it’s the job of scientists to share that information in an easily understandable way - something many fail at. Anyone can understand reptile overlords. But RNA viruses, protease inhibitors, the immune system, these are more tricky.
. But you know they’re going to come back triumphantly squealing about free speech and censorship, of course
Yeah and that too will be bullshit.
I am hoping titanium is a cure for long covid
I'm finding a biweekly dose of Laverack seems to be helping
I wouldn't normally get involved in this type of thread but I came across this quote last night which I thought was still (more) pertinent today than it was in the fifth century "Ignorance is bold and knowledge reserved"
The clue is in the username.
Tired? the effects of long covid?
😉

That equates to three Covid deaths in every million in China, compared with 3,000 per million in the US and 2,400 per million in the UK.
Those extremes are just staggering.
With over 90% of the population now vaccinated it is hard to understand why China is still pursuing its zero covid policy. It can't hold out indefinitely to covid and presumably with so much of the population vaccinated it won't now be overwhelmed in the ways other countries were.
With over 90% of the population now vaccinated
10% of 1.4bn is 140 million - thats quite a lot of people.
Even with a vaccination programme in the states and only a minority of people not being vaccinated 'not being vaccinated' is the leading cause of death across the population as a whole. So those 140m of unvaccinated Chinese folk would be dying quite enthusiastically even if large numbers have some protection. Add to that 10 times as many people needing serious medical intervention so they don't die and the effects on the labour market of long covid even if people have relatively mild experiences I'm sure their sums may well add up
We're looking at a return to 'normality' through a lens of having failed to take steps to minimise infection so we're considering the burden on infrastructure, health and the economy currently as 'not as bad as it was'. But things as they are aren't good enough - we failed and this is still failure.
Back at work after nearly two weeks. Still getting some chest pains and feeling a bit crap. OH did 4hours and came straight back home. Hoping thats just because she's slightly behind me.
I have no idea if long COVID once means a chance of long COVID again, but obviously that's a big worry.
She only had a few months break from COVID.
Week 4 here. Still have a cough at night and congestion. Feel fine during the day, although not started rides yet. Getting out for decent walks though. Think all this involuntary coughing has strained stomach and chest muscles, got a few aches and pain there.
