The general public don’t seem to understand
Lack of critical thinking os a huge educational and social issue on a lot of matters.
The government are desperate not to cancel Christmas, and rightly or wrongly, from a mental health point of view, avoiding people choosing to see granny regardless this year, I can see that point of view.
Wouldn't be surprised if schools have an extra week either side of Christmas, and then more restrictions in January.
The general public don’t seem to understand how vaccines work, that viruses mutate and that immunity wanes.
TiRed touched on this very well in the STW Podcast, if only we could get that message out to everyone! People hear the word 'Vaccine' and think of the MMR jab, one and you're done for life. They just don't understand that there are different vaccines for different viruses and they all work differently with different levels of effectiveness over time.
im seeing/hearing more people mentally approaching the edge, so much significance is placed on the coming weeks…. still feels like a long time till spring.
Personally I know that another winter of lockdown(s) would destroy me and that there are lots of people in a worse state. The Mental Health timebomb that all of this is producing throughout the country is still ticking and being added to. The first lockdown had the advantage of we had decent weather to mitigate things, last winter wasn't great but we still had the general public looking out for each other. This time round not only are we staring 3 months longer to ride out with restrictions before the summer gets us a reprieve but the goodwill and acceptance of rules has been destroyed. This is going to be one hell of a bumpy ride.
Just got back from visiting family in Florida. It's all changed here while I was away 😬 Now can't go out until we get our neg PCR tests.
Interesting to compare the response in the two places. I had a preconceived (low) opinion of what I would find over there based on the reporting, but...
In most places, mask-wearing was common, prob 50% where I shopped. All staff in retail and hospitality wore them. Loads of handwashing stations, extra ventilation, distancing signage etc. Free vaccines and drive through rapid testing at every pharmacy I was in. Lower takeup of vaccines is the obvious worry.
Right, I've decided I'm not waiting another 9 days for my (booked) booster, I'm off to the walk in around the corner.
Done. Hardly felt it. Now sat here ' not feinting' before I can leave. Moderna booster on top of 2 Ox Az, last late June. Fingers crossed I can keep free of it anyway but good to be fully jabbed. Seems to be a steady flow of walk-in here but then that's only based on 10 mins on a wet Saturday. Come on Croydon, roll your sleeves up.
Tuesday was my Pfizer top up to my two AZ's in March and June, and actual Covid in August. So hopefully I'm quite immune now. Only side effect was a sore arm (still is, a bit)
And flu jab this morning at the local surgery. Got a text invite a few week's back, today I walked to the surgery which takes 20 mins; gave my name and DoB to the receptionist in the car park, confirmed no allergies, etc., walk in one door, sleeve up, jab, and out the fire escape. Then walk home. Total time elapsed about 40 mins and 30s.
I did a four hour stint volunteering at the local mass vaccination centre yesterday evening. They had some Pfizer going spare at the end so I had a booster a few days early (was booked for Thursday anyway). Arm a bit more sore than after my previous AZs but no other effects so far. Here (Oxford) walk-ins are suspended because they're at capacity anyway.
Woohoo for vaccines!
A week after my Moderna spikevax, and am wiped out. Might be fighting off a cold as well. This on a background of at least one infection and two Ox/AZ six months prior. The protection afforded by AZ against omicron does look relatively poor, but remember that this is symptomatic infection. It is not disease severity. And I’m of the opinion that this couples with (very limited) evidence of milder infection means we will not see the same situation as last Christmas.
That and oral antivirals and antibodies.
Moderna booster about 24hrs ago on top of 2xAZ jabs April &june. Sore arm, slightly swollen lymph nodes in my armpit and neck, and a spell of slightly elevated HR last night.
considered a run this afternoon but decided to leave it until tomorrow instead.
I had Moderna booster after my original 2 AZ vaccines. Felt "weary" for a couple of days after both AZ shots, but only effect of Moderna was a small rash.
Weird how people react differently.
Just listened to TiReds podcast and if anyone hasn't heard it yet, 5 out of 5, would recommend, would listen again. Like having his amazing contribution to this thread condensed into 45 minutes.
Fingers crossed you're right @TiRed.
Had my booster on thu (lunchtime), went to club interval session on Thursday night, nothing yesterday, then parkrun this morning.
My body battery on the garmin has been in the grubber since, was really low yesterday, 5 last night, only up to 17 this morning after a good night's sleep (would usually gain 40-60% after that) and now it's back down to 5. Going out for another 5k with the wife when she comes home, be properly low after that!.
I know it's just a daft toy statistic, but its usually quite easy to correlate with how I actually feel energy wise.
NHS website is letting under 40s book for boosters now. 🙌🙌🙌
Landing page warning looks like you can’t, but it does let you through if you put your details in. Soft go-live before official announcement I think.
Apologies if already mentioned above, there are a lot of posts 😂
🤘Cheers!
I’d been checking for it to switch to under 40’s a little bit too regularly but hadn’t actually entered my details since boosters were first announced, just booked mine for my first day off!
Anyone else starting to get the feeling we are heading back to watching what Scotland do as a really good indicator as to what our English Overlords will do? Too late as usual though.
From a purely political viewpoint that will again make him look slow to act/incompetent but at the same time alienate him with many in his party/the populous as they don't want any further restrictions at all.
Lose, lose for him.
Visited a walk in centre today in Corby, it was surprisingly busy given how blasé most of the area has been. 2 wins - the 1st nurse didn't believe I was over 40, and the 2nd commented on how "muscley and strong" my arm was 😁
Took about 30 mins including the queue. Happy days.
I had a Pfizer booster the Tuesday before last - two AZ's before and around 18 months of long covid after presumed infection back in March 2020. Been pretty wiped out since the booster with depressed HRV levels and sort of long covid lite symptoms. Same thing happened to me for two weeks after the second AZ jab, but then had a big uptick. Google suggests that the spike protein particles generated by the body following MRNA vaccination take two to three weeks to degrade, so I guess it may be that my system's reacting to the spikes and once they're gone it'll calm down. I had flu-like stuff day after the jab, then fine for a couple of days, then started feeling rough again with dizziness, tiredness, weird ear pain and general fatigue etc.
Best of luck BWD 🙏
And I’m of the opinion that this couples with (very limited) evidence of milder infection means we will not see the same situation as last Christmas.
Well according to the media you're one of the minority who thinks that.
200k reported cases a day we were told when we unlocked back in July.
I'm no covid denier but I am skeptical of the headlines and bombardment of scientists opinions facts backed with loads of data* of how doomed we all are. Christmas will be going ahead for us Bojo, boosters have been had for everyone.
*OK maybe not that much data
Best of luck BWD 🙏
Cheers buddy. I'm feeling better today, so I'm hopeful I'll be okay in a day or two, which is what happened before. HRV pattern is very similar 🙂
Possibly daft question, but what constitutes a household contact. I don’t live with my girlfriend, but I see her every other day. If she tests positive do I have to isolate for ten days, or does it just count as a close non household contact
Scotland based..

Ben and Gary say that to all the guys 😎
Sore injection site and a headache.... Medicating with ibuprofen and taste testing the Lidl cheap champagne. My verdict, it's not worth £12.49, I'd prefer a decent Cava at that price.
From the BBC: People aged 30 and over in England will be able to book a Covid-19 booster jab from Monday.👍
Any medical people know why Covid jabs aren't aspirated like IMI's usually are?
^ There was some talk about it on this thread back in October. I can't remember the outcome but I recall it got a bit heated. Might be worth scrolling back.

Seem to recall one of the anti-vaxxers tried to tell retired nurse TJ how to give injections 🤦♂️
Something to do with how and where the needle goes iirc?
The aspiration thing comes from that Dr John Campbell who had been going on about it on YT. Personally I think he's not to be trusted.

booked mine for thursday. Appointment slots are thin on the ground most places available by me were around the 5th jan.
Might be worth scrolling back.
fast approaching 35k posts, this place needs an index!
@poopscoop - You could book them from yesterday on the NHS site, it went live before the landing page was changed.
Me and and a bunch of mates got appointments booked in Sat night.
Rather than start a new thread.... Asking for some advice! Wife had a call from track and trace this morning, close contact possible omicron (she is a teacher).. Told to isolate with youngest who is in same class. I know from school info there has been an outbreak (but don't know how many are the new flavour of the month)...... School shut.
Now I am supposed to be going to work tomorrow, and bad timing it's our team Christmas party in London. It's still going ahead as far as I am aware (very surprised it was not cancelled)
Anyway so I am a close contact of two people who are isolating due to possible multiple omicron exposure. It gets more tricky as we all had covid about 8 weeks ago.
Track and trace gave so much conflicting advice I am really confused. My wife couldn't really understand what the person was saying.
Do I need to get a Pcr and isolate? Do I still need to get pcr even though I had covid and two jabs? Would you go to work tomorrow? Would you go to Christmas party?
There is nothing stopping me (I think) but the moral implication of possibly spreading to colleagues this close to Christmas.
Do I need to get a Pcr and isolate? Do I still need to get pcr even though I had covid and two jabs? Would you go to work tomorrow? Would you go to Christmas party?
While your wife may be asked to isolate and test, I don't think you are required to do anything if you are a contact of a contact. I would continue with lateral flows regularly. PCR if you are symptomatic. TBH if your workplace is daft enough not to cancel the Christmas party, this is good excuse not to go.
I think the working assumption should be that having covid (eg Delta) already and two jabs probably offers relatively little protection from infection and onward transmission of Omicron. It is likely to give you protection against severe disease.
Given how contagious it seems to be indoors, another working assumption should be that one or both of your wife and child has caught it. Hopefully not though.
@doncorleoni I would get a drive through PCR and isolate until the result was in, but that's me being ultra cautious as a nearly 60 year old working in an office that has a staff that is a similar age and some that are vulnerable.
Would you go to Christmas party?
Absolutely not.
What the law and guidance is in your situation, I don't know, so many conflicting rules it's hard to find clarity... but in your position I also wouldn't care. I'd self isolate with the family. I wouldn't get a PCR, due to recently having had the virus. I wouldn't be socialising with loads of your colleagues and risk giving them a unwanted secret santa present.
Yeah cheers guys.. Just needed a bit of reassurance. I will be staying at home until we all get results of pcr (going to drive in after lunch). Happy days 🙁
I am actually very annoyed that work has not cancelled my christmas party, as much as I like my colleagues and enjoy socialising getting on a train now to Waterloo and then sitting in a stupid busy resteraunt in the centre of London just seems a stupid stupid thing to do (to be honest I would have probably not gone anyway to make a point despite the track and trace call!)
I am actually very annoyed that work has not cancelled my christmas party,
Why would you be angry? It's a personal choice if people attend or not.
Officially you don't need to self isolate. The 'guidance' is that you need to continue with daily self testing and if you do this and have no symptoms and are double jabbed then you're fine to carry on as normal, even if you've been in contact with the moronic strain. Of course all this is still just 'guidance' so what you do is your personal choice.

Sore arm today, my word. Bit achy but I'll live. Better this than covid.

Do what you think is best, never mind the rules, your boss or your colleagues.
Re. Christmas parties.
Ours is this coming Friday. We are going bowling, with the same 12 people that I see indoors 3 times a week anyway.
Bowling, dinner and one reasonably priced alcoholic beverage is the total of the free stuff/ perks we will get out the company for the year.
Anonymous vote on Tuesday as to whether it goes ahead.
Any guesses?
Pfizer booster today, so far no hangover/sore arm. AZ vaccines x2 summer time and had COVID end October.
Sharing if of interest.
Today I've survived 2 x 1h car sharing with two anti-vaxxers without once raising my voice or taking the piss. Thanks to all who've contributed to this thread with verifiable information that has anti-vaxxers keen to change the subject.
48hrs post Moderna booster and one really sore armpit.
Today I’ve survived 2 x 1h car sharing with two anti-vaxxers
Yes, but have they? Tune back in a fortnight to find out!

Had mine Thursday, same as you, 2x Az with a Pfizer boost.
I did a LOT of emptying last night, not Picolax territory but certainly unexpected. Light as a feather today, lovely.
