Thinking of driving to the alps for skiing next year.
Where abouts would be a good place to break the journey? Any reasonably priced accomodation recommendations?
Long time ago (student field trip) we camped at Beaune on the way back fro the Alps D'Haute Provence
We usually stay in an F1 around Troyes or Dijon. Just a bed for the night, easy to get to from the motorway.
When we did it, our accommodation (in Ste Foy) was Sun-Sun so we drove down to Albertville, stayed in a cheap hotel (it was crap, but there are plenty of others to try) then we could get up the next morning, quick drive down to Bourg St Maurice, up the funicular to Les Arcs for the day, down again in the afternoon and off to check in to our chalet.
Worked nicely but it rather depends on where you want to break the journey and how far your UK side of the trip is. There's plenty of Formule 1 / ETAP type places not far from the autoroute to crash at.

We're thinking of driving to the Aosta Valley, so probably more than we'd want to do in one hit...
Troyes looks good, but depends on the tunnel time that we book. Not too bothered what time we arrive on Sunday as we aren't planning on getting a day's skiing in until Monday am.
If you do go for F1 or similar in Troyes then book Troyes Sud (south) as its closest to the M-way exit. You probably will need to book at the weekend during ski season.
Last time I stayed in Epernay and did a couple of tours of Champagne houses. Mmmm.
Nice camping by the river too.
+1 Troyes. Its a lovely old town, make time for dinner there.....
I've stayed in Dijon before now, but in the last decade have just driven through the night, got to Morzine about 9-10am. 2 hours kip/caffeination then it's on with the skiing/biking (delete as applicable)
Depends where in UK you're coming from. We stayed in Reims in the Ibis hotel(really clean & cheap + good brekkie) by the train station. Secure parking and a fantstic town to go and wander around. Great choice of bars/restaurants if you want that kind of thing. Probably about 3 hours from Calais/6-7 from Morzine area. We stayed in it on our way back from the Alps to break up the journey.
