google?

You dont need manuals for anything these days, just let geeks work it out and ask them.

Perfectly practical, just hold a key to display the alternative characters, like this: ?ž????ërt??û¥?$¿
And then there are the alternative language keyboards available in iOS, like Cherokee.
Easy peasy. But then I find the Windows GUI horribly clunky and unintuitive, and the spellcheck in iOS is superb.
But I can only speak as someone who's used Macs since 1995, before people thought there was anything cool about computers, so what do I know.

@Timwillows If you open system preferences and select the Language and Text preference pane. This has 4 tabs within it, select the Input tab this will allow you to select which languages your keyboard will use. Make sure British has a tick against it. Bottom right there is another box to tick "Show Input Menu in Menu Bar.
This will put a little Union Flag in the menu bar at the top of the screen. This has the Character Viewer and Keyboard viewer in it.
The keyboard viewer puts a window on screen that shows what pressing alt/control/shift modifies the key to.
The character viewer gives you things like stars and arrows to insert into text.??
