This could be a classic case of 'be careful what you wish for'.

Having said that, I do feel like we've missed out on at least four proper summers recently and we've not had many decent-length cold snaps in the winter either.

I hope we haven't just gone over some climatic tipping-point to be honest. Despite what the enthusiasts / denyers say, no one really has a bloody clue until about 20 years after the event!

I'm really hankering after some good, freeze-dried trails at the moment. Long enough for the edges of foot and tyre marks to get broken off so we're left with sandpaper-like dirt. I absolutely love it when it is like that!

Come on weather, don't leave it to people in 300 years time to deduce from tree-ring studies that it was just a shit time for mountain biking!

Two years ago there were massive icicles on every building whereas this year I may have to mow the lawn at the WE if it stays this warm!

Saying a mere 5C at the WE for East Anglia.... It's currently 11C outside right now.

Correct, but it still wasn't for an extended period. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I think we used to get (10-20 years ago) more clearly differentiated seasons rather than just a median level of moderate weather all year punctuated by a week of extreme cold or hot.

You only have to look at how much leaf litter is now accumulated in many woodlands to see how the lack of extended frosts means the leaves don't have that initial ripping and resulting faster decomposition at the moment.

That's one of the beauties of mountain biking - you actually get to see nature at work - he says trying to take the positives out of riding through ankle-deep slop!

You're mistaken. In the last 20 years certainly there's been very few long cold winters, only 2 I can recall of in the last 10 and that 2010 and 2011.

I agree. Shorts all year round 3/4 are not necessary.

you're wrong +1

The last 3 years have been cold and snowwy.

The idea that summers were longer/hotter and winters were always cold and snowy when people were children is mainly the result of the fact that when your a kid a week is a long time, so short periods get amplified in memory and the weather is still a novelty so a bit of snow, or a trip to the beach becomes a big event.

Thinking back to being a kid (late 80's, early 90's) I hardly remember any snow, I do remmeber my parents waking me up at 6am to go play in some before it melted. A couple of years ago I was walking through waist deep snow in Reading!

how ever i have seen photographs of my grandparents where drystane dykes are under snow - near crathies

either the drystane dykes were made bigger or my grandparents were 3 foot tall at the time to make them look full size - walls still there and still looking pretty tall for snow depth to me.

havnt seen it that bad for a while
