...and you are given the option of 'withdraw in euros' or 'withdraw in GBP', which one is the best to do?

What are the foreign currency charges on the card you are using? It is probably best to withdraw in euros but entirely depends on who will charge you most for the transaction

Take out euros, GBP are useless in France.

I've often wondered about that. Not enough to find out though.

I reckon that my bank will charge me the least, I just wasn't sure which of those two options meant that it would be my bank doing the charging...

Yes take the euros as charges should be lower. I much prefer that the charges are now shown clearly on your bank statement, bit of an eye opener how expensive they are mind. IME its better to do fewer larger withdrawls than go back numerous times due to a minium per transaction charge

Euros. I got a much better rate at the atm than anywhere in UK.

Martin Lewis says the GBP option is a moneymaker for the bank. Choose life. Sorry, Euro.

Just get a Revolute card.

Apply on your phone, takes 2 mins,

I've been using one for the last couple of times I've been in Morzine.

Open account. Transfer some cash in. Convert to euros or whatever when you want to. Use at cash points, garages, restaurants, shops etc. It works like a MasterCard debit card but there is no fees at all, rates are better than my bank.

I used an Avia garage on the way here that wouldn't except my pin at the pump for some reason, I had to get my Halifax debit out, £1.50 in transaction fees and £1.49 for the conversion to euros, also used it to draw some cash in Paris, got a 10% total charge on £30 !!! Robbing gits.

Revolute is the way ahead

Can you then transfer unused funds back out? A lot of these cards seem to keep that side of things quiet

That's often where the hidden fees are. Got one that charges monthly non use fee and cashing out back to sterling is a huge fee (unless up front I paid protection money to not have to pay a fee).

I got a better rate at the atm right in front of the exchange desk at Gatwick last week!
And no queue either.
