I’ve already asked this question earlier today, but it was tagged on the end of another thread and I’ve had no reply so am asking again (sorry).

I’ve been offered a new job and need to resign. I was hoping to sit down with my boss today (as I need to give 1 months notice it would mean I can finish on Fri 13th August and start new job on the 16th), but my boss is working from home today. Should I:

1)call him today and give him the letter tomorrow and so keep the same planned leaving date, or

2)Wait till tomorrow and hope he's feeling generous and lets me off with just under the months notice?

Give the letter to your HR department today (you only need to notify the company, not your boss specifically) and speak to him tomorrow or call him if you feel that's best.

Just email him the letter & follow it with a hard copy - copy any HR dep't you have too

Think that's what I'd do in that position - and obviously date the letter for today - and argue the point later on. Better to ask for forgiveness later than permission first.....

The HR dept is in the head office and I'm in a small office with only 2 others today.

I quite like my boss so don't want to p-him off too much, it might be a bit of a contraversial move so need to speak with boss sooner rather than later and am a little bit nervouse so just want to get it over with 😐

When I last resigned I did the usual thing and timed it so that I left on a Friday. I subsequently found out from one of the HR people that the calculation for my last payment included weekends which meant that had I left on the Monday, I'd have got two extra days pay! Obviously accounting practices vary but it might be worth checking out.

Or, if you are owed holiday you could just take that at the end of your notice period and effectively leave early.

my mrs looked into this a couple of weeks ago and apparently your boss can refuse to accept your holiday request and make you work your whole notice period and pay you for the holiday time you are still entitled too.
Be aware of this law before promising your new boss a start date.

I had this recently too. TBH if you're owed holiday it just means you finish earlier, but get paid to the end of your notice period. Its unlikely they'll let you work your full notice and pay you for the holidays as well. Its an either / or situation.

Depends on the job - plenty of people who work here leave because there's too much work and as such, they get told they can't take their remaining holiday during their notice period and simply get paid extra for it.

Do it on Monday morning mano-a-mano, and let your new employer know (a) once it's done and (b) your confirmed elave date (and therefore your confirmed start date).

Couldn't do it before today as only got the official offer / contract yesterday. I want to try and start on the 16th as I've got too weeks holiday (the first two weeks of Sept) and could get 2 weeks work in before then (get the induction etc over with), rather than making them wait 8 weeks.

My boss is a decent guy (which is why I feel bad / nervous) so I'll do it first thing tomorrow.

Why can nothing be simple?! 🙄

so doing it tomorow would make your last day the saturday, cant see how this would effect your monday start

Do it face to face tomorrow. Use your remaining holidays as a bargaining tool to ensure you can start your new job on the day that you want to.
