So, beyond all the strange tribal behavior that comes into play at election time, when was the last time a head of state of the United Kingdom was elected by the populace?
Oh for God's sake man!
Was Oliver Cromwell elected?
EDIT: I guess he wasn't head of state of Scotland, so perhaps doesn't count.
What on earth would make you WANT an Elected Head of State? Far better to have a ceremonial one, even just for the savings:
And if you ever consider the UK having a President rather than King/Queen, just imagine Tony Blair* as the President...
* insert most previous PM's, Mayors etc etc
…or - given that MrsW is ceremonial only - you could ask 'why do we need a head of state at all?'
Then you could make even more savings and just have birds and trees and stuff on the stamps.
I'm making sense, you know it. 😉
If the Queen is just ceremonial, on whose behalf do MI5 and Special Branch spy on MPs and the Prime Minister?
lol @ linking to a blog on royalcentral about a republic.
no agenda or biased at all
If the Queen is just ceremonial, on whose behalf do MI5 and Special Branch spy on MPs and the Prime Minister?
[conspiracy theory] that would be the men in grey suits [/conspiracy theory]
Who do the men in grey suits work for?
[conspiracy theory] the 'system' - an international league of right-wing power players [/conspiracy theory]
ALDI
Leave our tourist attraction out of it, just wonder if royal carriages display baby on board stickers now?
FFS, not this again.
I can't understand why anyone should be entitled to weild power as a result of an accident of birth.
With an unelected second chamber, the members of which outnumber the elected parliamentarians, and a hereditary head of state, it just goes to show how backward this nation really is, and far we have to progress.
Can't happen soon enough in my opinion. The Republic of Ireland's last few Presidents have been exemplary people, capable of representing the nation on any occasion, and were elected by the people.
If Britain ditched the Monarchy, what would happen to the Monarchies of Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc?
Klunk....Is that Higgins from Magnum PI on the right?
FFS, not this again.
When you think about it, Flash, there's only about 7 basic STW themes…
1. Recommend me a … car, coffee machine, axe, espresso machine, log burner…
2. Politics is well out of order… something for the lefties and righties to get stuck into
3. I've had an accident… what kind of insurance for me…?
4. Links to news stories plus associated chatter and general badinage
5. Cute animals, birds, fish, plus photography/paintings and nature art appreciation
6. The big-hitter outrage thread, plus threats of libel, infamy and associated ban hammer, usually involving references to TJ, Fred, Edinburgh and asshats
7. The Queen (is she evil, just slightly skewed or proper good for tourism?)
…so this ol' nugget was due a comeback!
I suggest, to avoid such recurrences in the future, more reliance on the whimsy threads and humbly suggest we begin with 'why don't battery hens run out?'
Looks like that fella from Spandau Ballet. 😕
Leave our tourist attraction out of it
Legoland is our head of state?
If your arguments for the monarchy are tourism or "what about President Blair?" you've already lost the argument.
The Royal family is traditional I'm cool with that.
But monarchy has always been hereditary or taken by force.
So if we want to keep a king/queen surely anyone who can raise an army or arrange a brutal murder surely gets a turn if they are successful?
Wait a minute... are all those guys in black wearing Jim'll Fix It medals?
OMFG!
Edit: And the guy from Spandeau Ballet is clearly checking out Richard Attenborough's arse.
Wait a minute... are all those guys in black wearing Jim'll Fix It medals?
No no no...its the blue cushion....that's the link. Jimmy had one too, when the royals found out he had one they hit it off and all went to Bella Pasta. The rest is history.
given that MrsW is ceremonial only - you could ask 'why do we need a head of state at all?'
Someone's got to go and waste time meeting people - the PM can get on with actual work. Well, in theory anyway.
Damn seavers, you're good, not many people know about Mountbatten's cushion...
But that isn't the link in question
Give us a clue JHJ?
Give us a clue?
You mean Lionel Blair is involved too?
Prizes if anyone can tell me who it is holding the crown and what relevance it has to Jimmy Savile's long and close friendship with the Royal Family...
It's Tommy Crownhandler of course. The Savile link is that there's a hole in the cushion and he liked to surprise the Queen when she lifted up the crown. She liked it as well, especially when he made the 'Uhuhuhuhhhh' noise at the same time.
His cousin's dad is a long time friend of Camilla.
After his cousin's mum has a bath, the plughole might make you do a double take.
Benedict Cumberbatch?
Ken Dodd's dad's dog's dead.
Nope, the plughole reference is nothing to do with feather dusters.
I'll bite then - reptilian scales clogging up the plughole by any chance?
I'd just like to say I have no problem what so ever with the royal family. I'm not a royalist but i just kind of like them. They seem nice and are good for tourism.

It's déjà vu all over again.
Or Groundhog Day...
From his name, JHJ must be a vinyl fan, the fact his favourite record seems to be stuck rather indicates so.
They seem nice and are good for tourism.
France killed all their royals and now nobody goes there on holiday.
Some people need to visit this page: http://republic.org.uk/what-we-want/monarchy-myth-buster
I heard recently, through a very reliable source, that the Queen essentially controls the entire world through a secret organisation of paedos, masons and the Catholic church. (And MK-Ultra was in there too I think).
That being the case I think we're probably better off keeping her on our side. Don't you??
She appears fairly fond of Blighty and she had a couple of nice gaffs here, so perhaps she'll spare some of us when the reptilian overlords come for The Harvesting.
I'm guessing you have the answer to the question then CountZero...
If folk are debating the election, which applies to but one part of Her Majesty's Government, we should look at the bigger picture, especially if the democratically elected representatives are then spied on in an undemocratic fashion...
Though vinyl has it's traditional charms, it's a bit of a burden to carry around, not to mention all the dirt that accumulates in the grooves.
Bit like the monarchy really...
How's about that Pop Pickers!
The power of google image search...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Douglas-Hamilton,_16th_Duke_of_Hamilton
Good work Matt, have to say, I didn't realize he was keeper of Palace of HolyroodHouse
What if his Auntie with her funny plughole had been working with the Privy Council for a significant amount of time...
Is he bringing n the dessert course?
What do we need to do to get pudding?
If only we had discussed this recently, read the book that was very well recommended yet JHJ? The one that gave you loads of answers?
When did we discuss the election of a new head of state?
Must've missed that...
Mostly just all the BS about the HoS having lots of power and all that. Replacing was probably covered but I'm sure you didn't read any of the replies you didn't like...
What, the head of state of the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand among many others all being the same person...
Nope, definitely no power there.
Anyhoo, want to make a guess on why the Keeper of the Palace of Holyroodhouse's Auntie may be relevant?
Might even have an effect on history down Tasmania way if you're lucky...
Yes, Mrs Windsor and her representatives are completely apolitical...
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975_Australian_constitutional_crisis
We'll see in the next few days how non-poitical she is in regard to choosing the new government...

Yes, Mrs Windsor and her representatives are completely apolitical...http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975_Australian_constitutional_crisis
With every historian pointing out that it had nothing to do with the queen and resolved a complete political deadlock. See JHJ's previous rambling & ranting thread for the conclusions from multiple sources on the topic.
Doing something in the name of is not the same as them doing it, especially with ceremonial positions.
Hamilton is the premier peer in Scotland. Keep the royals but get rid of this bollocks.
I'd like to see a vote function every now and then on this forum.
In general I ignore JHJs post as I now automatically assume anything he says is tripe, closing down the possibility of finding something true in amongst the morass of royal peso control lizards.
I still wouldn't be surprised if the user in question is a double bluff designed to discredit.
Keep the royals but get rid of his bollocks.
Seems a bit harsh!
And I'm not sure where you'd find a tiny guillotine...
Seem to recall Epicyclo was in the Australian Civil Service at the time of the Whitlam coup and tells a different story to mike's swift dismissal...
However, piemonster does raise a point~ could there are any accounts on here whose job is to discredit dissent?
After all the Special Demonstration Squad used the names of dead children, to infiltrate various organizations which posed a threat to the status quo...

Much like GCHQ has online agents to Manipulate, Deceive, and Destroy Reputations
Back on topic, the uncle of the 16th Duke of Hamilton, Scotland's premier peer and Keeper of the Palace of Holyroodhouse is in this picture, though his auntie is of real concern:
So as a more useful thing that posting pointless pics...
What do you want the elected Head of State to do?
The current one has no real power and can't actually order anything, if you create something to vote for they probably will need something to do.
What power would you give a head of state?
Again what are they for if not a ceremony.
Should they have power to direct the government?
I'd agree that moving to an elected second chamber is a good idea, the longer terms employed here in Oz (6 years) make sense and they can be more reserved and less election focused, but adding another layer on top seems a little pointless.
If your assumptions were correct, your questions would lead to the question:
What's the point of a Head of State?
and we still have the issue of on whose behalf elected MPs and the Prime Minister are spied on by Special Branch and MI5...
Just in for jhj...
Get. A. Life.
Message ends.
could there are any accounts on here whose job is to discredit dissent?
If everything you reckon you know were actually true, the MI5 guardians of the lizard-paedo deep state would have you killed in a convenient "accident" involving auto-erotic strangulation. They wouldn't be wasting their time setting up bogus log-ins on a mountain biking forum to undermine you.
I think. But saying that probably proves I work for the lizards. It's tricky. 🙂
The real issue here is the various methods of castration available...

When do we get to elect the Head of State?
After the revolution
especially if the democratically elected representatives are then spied on in an undemocratic fashion...
How on earth do you spy on someone undemocratically ?
This guy's got the right idea...
It's 2015 - there's no place for a 'divine right to rule' in this world.
People who say "it's just tradition" or "it's good for tourism" are just brainwashed apologists for child-eating, misanthropic, genetics-supremacist insanity.
PARKLIFE!
