Morning folks!!
[IMG] [/IMG]

So after meningitis last year I've been unable to do any exercise at all in the last 10 months.
I'm going to start some gentle runs to get me back in shape and was wondering when I could take the pupster out with me.
I'm just going to start with the 2 mile loop I walk with him at the moment. I know your not suppose to push too much early on with development etc but at the moment he runs around like a loon anyway and if I was running he'd prob cover less distance as he'd be following me and exploring less

Currently 16 weeks old. Springer / cocker cross.
The loop is all off road and grass / mud so no hard paths etc
So do I take him with me or leave him at home sulking???

Another one of the salty sea dog...

He'll be prob fine - I think it's not so good to be going long distances at a constant speed, stopping/starting/changing direction is all good for the bone development.

I'd leave it until 6 months before starting. Build up gradually. The dog will hurt itself to keep up with you if it comes to it.

The two things to avoid are:
1, Running at a constant pace (the dog not you)
2. Running further than the dog is happy with (hard to tell as he will do anything not to loose sight of his dad)

There are plenty of ways to do this. Run / walk, build up slowly, stop to play etc. You know your dog best. Enjoy.

Good point..... they will keep going until the collapse 🙁

Two miles is long way for a little one.

When we got our dog, the breeder advised us to do about 5mins per month of age, which doesn't sound much, but they get plenty of exercise just playing etc when young. http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/395

If the dog is running rings around you when you walk it then it won't be doing any more running if you're running too.

Our puppy never stops running anyway. Whether I'm walking, running or sitting on the sofa...

Generally the recommendation is wait until they are 12 months old so their bones are properly formed etc. Then build up slowly and not to run in heat and also ensure they have water available.
