Ooooh - tricky one McM....

Lots of contenders: Good old figure-of-8 is pretty versatile, double-fishermans, alpine butterfly, bowline all good. Then there is the inevitable Gordian knot which usually results in trying to uncoil a climbing rope, but for sheer simplicity and beauty it's got to be a CLOVE HITCH.

[img] [/img]

So many uses!

A bowline, for sure! Almost as strong as a spliced loop, but tied in a matter of seconds. And that whole 'rabbit comes up the hole, round the tree' etc etc is the stuff of legends and nursery rhymes! One to pass along the generations...

Its got to be the figure of eight (or nine). Excellent and easy for tying loads down on the trailer!

before transalp this year i learnt a few in order to set the tarp up, but i've forgotten the names. something hitch and another one.

also know a few from my fishing days, but there isn't much call day-to-day for tieing hooks onto lines. shame.

it's a nice feeling when you tie a good knot.

Clove hitch aswell, quick, simple, easy to adjust and you can pull the weight of a ski boat and trailer out of the water and then easily undo the knot with your fingers.

I also like the autoblock, again for it's simplicity (on left)

Another for bowline.
Is it the only knot you can tie one handed?

Although I do love a good reef knot.

Or what about a Sheepshank

/p>

1) where do you obtain a loop of rope with no ends ?
2) the left hand loop looks to be just wound round the other - does that count as a knot ?

I'm terrible at remembering names of knots, is a Clove hitch the one you can use to attach a rope to another rope and then use it to apply tension without it slipping? I think it is in which case this knot saved my bacon on Loch Ness and gets my vote!

Care to expand on that?

Double fisherman's is satisfying, highwayman's is one I remember from cubs; "Wild west robbers used to use it to tie their horses up so they could run out, pull the cord and be away in a second". I still regale people with that story 🙂

A bow.

Girlies use them to tie up clothes, and they're really easy to undo. If they had clove hitches and god knows what keeping their dresses on I'd be fumbling for hours.

ck - i've spent many a while laughing at riggers trying to tie monkey's fist knots to get a line over a bar. In general the time it takes for them to get it right is significantly less than that which it takes me to procure and erect some other form of access! I can't tie them for toffee.

The knot weakens a rope, depending on how it 'grips' the rope it is tied in will dictate by how much. Some knots are better than others, I got a book from the library once 😉 It quoted a bowline knotted rope as having 45-50% of it's original strength. Some knots only reduce the strength by 10-15%. Ashley Book Of Knots (ABOK#) being the standard ref. Can't remember the name of the book I read on the subject. I use bowlines for the ease of un-tying but for certain applications and rope diameters have changed to the what I thought was a fishermans knot but it isn't like the ones above. Closest I see to the one I tie is the perfection knot.

Alpine Butterfly, use it all the time.

Figure of Nine over a Figure of eight, easier to undo when its been loaded.

Double figure of eight is handy

I love knots!!!

Although slightly off topic, a proper bow tie knot.

Bowline's my fave. Reef and clove hitch are good too.

Should know more seeing as I crew on a reasonable sized yacht.

Alpine butterfly is a great knot. Dead easy to tie and can take full load in any direction. Bunny knot is a great variation on figure 8 for spreading load across 2 anchors.

Bowline is neat, but comes undone too easily when not loaded, and there's too many people who f'k up tying them and end up dropping what they're supposed to be tying on.

nowadays i just stick to a figure of 8 loop and a karibiner and loop stuff through, the knots not going to come undone and i can blame the rope/crab/operator if something expensive hits the deck.

plausible deniability 8)

Our sewing teacher (yes, I am THAT old!!) taught us the line "Not a knot a backstitch" with regard to starting off a hem or other line of stitching...

I am fond of the double fisherman's for making slings out of lengths of cord and also an overhand knot for joining two ropes to abseil off as it leaves a flat side for the ropes to easily slide over anything when you are retrieving the ropes.

I like knots. Here are a couple I tied. The first one is almost certainly original, and I don't think I could tie it again, but I tied it once.
