That has some sort of popularity anyway - to watch? To play?

Just been reading about Curling; I really can't see the appeal.

Watch and play - golf. But I really wouldn't know as I haven't done either 🙂

Football isn't boring to play.
It can be painful, but not boring.

Watch - Football
Play - Football

In fact anything even vaguely related with the curse that is football - a bunch of grown men charging about after an over inflated pigs-bladder screaming at each other and hurling themselves to the floor upon even the slightest contact from another player! WTF?

A sport for the common masses - utter rubbish.

I cant really think of Snooker or Darts as sports as such, if you play something does that then mean its a sport. Does it then mean that playing cards or a board game becomes a sport. :!:I Sport to me is doing something more active that gets your cardio rate up.

To watch - Mountain biking.

Seriously, it's really not very good as a spectator sport.

When does it stop being sport & become a game or even art for example?

Dressage? Is that sport?
Rythmic gymnastics? Art?
Ice dancing?
Synchronized swimming?

Don't get me wrong I love the mtb, but there is No Way footbal is as boring as cycling up hills, just no way.
Unless of course no one ever passes to you because they have no faith in your ability and they're worried you'd let the team down.

I mean you could say that about any sport.

MTB - Well cycle, cycle some more stop.

Tennis hit a ball run hit a ball stop.

Climbing - Climb up, rest, climb down, stop.

I mean how is football more boring than another sport ?

Possibly I could see argument for golf + cricket there are large periods of time when your not doing anything just walking from one area to another and not involved in the game.

In football you should always be involved or trying to be involved.

football: kick ball. run a bit. watch someone else kick ball. run a bit more.

Basketball: Bounce ball. throw it in a hoop. watch someone else bounce ball

Cycling: Sit on bike. pedal. brake. home. wash

boxing: punch someone. get punched back.

rugby: pick up ball. run a bit. throw ball. watch some else run with ball

Hang on... ALL sports are boring!!

Given the distance I struggle to hit a golf ball, there's not much time between shots for me to get bored! 😆

golf.

Because I detest everything about it and therefore have to list it as boring too, even though I've never touched a golf club and my only encounter with a golf course was when I accidently rode my bike across one.

I'd understand if you said playing football can be very frustrating.

Often your make a great run and some ego who thinks he's better than you wont pass the ball.

Another time your'll run take the defender away from them and they wont even notice.

Then you'll have the ball and they'll expect you to pass it straight to their feet with out trying to creat some space.

It is a frustrating game because your reling on other people. However when you do some thing good as team I find it possible more rewarding than doing something good on your own.

"...All the people that think football is boring to play.... how would you rate your footballing ability?

Is body building a sport? Some have tried to get it into the Olympic Games; it is in the World Games.

No way to golf, it's an incredible sport. Surely you can't hate something you've never tried.

How about athletics? All that waiting around and waiting around for a few seconds of action.

Cricket - just *unbelievably* boring. I've played it a couple of times when I was younger and even sat through a whole day of a test match (between Australia and the West Indies) when I was visiting a mate in Sydney 7 or 8 years ago. I just can't see the attraction in any way.

Southern Yeti - Just cant stand it in any way shape or form.

Played it out of MY choice as a kid thanks for the concern, worked at local football grond in my adolescent years which really proved to me how many w@ankers are invloved in the sport.

Hill dogder - the changing room incidnets were far from traumatic - ask you're dad! 😉

Football is boring, watching idiots swear and argue at the ref 🙄 Snooker & darts boring, golf very boring, cycling great when you just watch the highlights, boxing used to like it but its lost it appeal, cricket boring, F1 start is okay then its boring although a bit better if its raining. Tennis is also boring, so is swimming why cant the female swimmers wear bikinis then it wouldn't be boring. In fact I'm bored with a lot of things these days. 😕 Must be a mid life crises.

Football only lasts 90 minutes because it's so dull. When you get a game which goes to extra time, even the players get bored and start having a lie-down.

Dylan - fair play. Think there are probably a lot of w...... because fo the huge number of people involved. Anyone utterly obsessed with a sport can seem a bit of a ****t, and give the sport a bad name. Tech obsessed bike geeks anyone?

Golf is an awful game. Ex golf addict. Gave it up in the end as I came to the decision I do not have the right temperament for it [short tempered!]

Highly addictive and very frustrating. Definitely crap, but not boring.

Now dressage (or anything to do with horses).. Uber dull.

Basketball

Golf is fantastic to play, a lovely walk in the countryside with your mates on a brisk morning away from the hassles of home and work, with some semi serious sport invloved. Whats not to like? And you get to wear snazzy jumpers and shoes. And have a drink and some grub afterwards. Frustrating as hell though.

But it does nt make any sense.

Its like your picking out football for some reason.

I mean you could say you find playing all ball games in general boring.
ie football, rugby, aussie rules, gaelic, basket ball, netball, hurling, la crosse.

I mean the basic concepts are all the same move the ball away from your net and put in the oppositions net you will try to stop you.

Hence if one is boring all the others boring. Which basically rules out probably the most played class of sporting game in the world.

(I know some smart ass is going to come on say cricket/baseball/rounders are similar sport and probably due to the size of india are the most played sporting game in the world and I said cricket is dull Im a hyprocrite. Well thats probably right but my reasoning is that often your not playing them your standing watching some one else play which is boring. When I'm actually batting/bowling I enjoy cricket but its such a small percentage of the time.)

Not "stirred" at all. Just think it's silly to say its boring to play. To watch yes, I can't stand it.

My football doesn't last 90 mins - 5-a-side.

Some old, dead bloke is quoted as saying "There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering. All the rest are merely games."

Televised mountaineering? I don't think.

I think we need some maths something like

Interest Rating = Total Time of Event *
(/Total Time of Event/Time spent actually playing)
/ Average Percentage of Participants involved at a single moment

with lower numbers being more interesting

So Cricket Test Match
= 120 hours * ( 120/50 hours) / 2plyer/22players %
= 120 * 2.4 / 0.909 = 316.831

100m Sprint

=0.0025 hours * ( 0.0025/0.0025 hours) / 100%
=0.0025 hours * 1 / 1 = 0.0025

With all sports falling somewhere between these ranges. Possibly with gold topping cricket.

"golf - boring game, boring people"

I play golf with some of the same people i ride with, how does that work then?

If we're talking boring people, then mountain biking is right up there. Some very interesting people and some as dull as dishwater. Most of the folk i've met off here are in the former and virtually all are of the very friendly and easy to get on with variety. 🙂

I think with some Red Bull style intervention/backing, DH Mountain Biking could be one of the more exciting sports to watch. Perhaps if the Atherons find form next year perhaps Redbull might step up their involvement...

I mean jesus, they made a sort of success of the Airrace!

Many sports are boring to watch if you don't understand what's going on. I find golf tops my personal tedium mountain, but I have friends who will spend hours watching. They can appreciate the skill (as they play it), to me it's people in bad clothing walking slowly.

Road cycling - a couple of years ago I would have agreed it is boring, but now I know a lot more about what is going on it can be fascinating/exciting/gripping depending on the circumstances. Can be boring too on occasion.

All sports are boring to watch, though some of them make me want to do them when I watch them, actually watching them is dull.

Most sports are boring to do because they don't entertain me. I hate team sports.

Anything with round balls or played originally by gentlemen.

Rugby League as played in Oz is great to watch. Don't how those blokes don't disintegrate.

Any "sport" that was only invented as a means to pass the time is going to be extremely dull to watch - cricket, golf, bowls, fishing.

All these could be made a lot mor interesting if snipers were introduced 🙂

Basketball is worst bl**dy sport ever devised by human beings.

Basically 10 extremely tall people sinking baskets at each end of a court, running up scores like 2000 to 1998, until the last whistle is blown, at which point, whoever sunk the last basket wins.

Yay.

At the risk of enraging half the forum, all those ones where humans turn themselves into robots, training for hours to perfect a dull technique or just get pointlessly fit. Basically swimming, athletics and biking that isn't off-road.

I've tried watching it a few times but I can't really work out the tactics etc and what's going on at all.

That's probably more down to the commentary than the actual sport. To be fair some road races (like the flatter 'linking' stages in the Tour de France) can be unbelievably dull - 6hr of watching a bunch of blokes ride bikes with 5 minutes of madcap action at the end. But throw in a few mountains, some team tactics and a well-known home rider like Bradley Wiggins doing really well and it can be gripping!

My personal vote would go to golf, bowls or cricket as the dullest with football as probably the worst sport (not dullest, just worst in terms of the vast amounts of money involved and the fact that the majority of players seem to be complete tossers).
