I did give my wife a pearl necklace last year. From John Lewis though (the shop, not the person)

Long weekend in Milan/Monza Italian GP. Last year of the "proper" engines. She also met Jackie Stewart in the pits. I just heckled Damon Hill. 😀

A 2015 Norco Sight Carbon, with upgraded Pike RC3, Cane Creek Inline, Stans Arch/Hope wheels, XT 11 speed drivetrain and carbon Renthal bars.

Unfortunately, due to a slight sizing oversight on my part, it's just a smidge too large for my lovely lady so I'm doing the honourable thing and am riding it myself. It's what she'd want me to do.

I've been refurbishing a vintage wooden kayak for the past couple of months. Sneaking out a few nights a week to my parents garage to secretly add yet a-bloody-nother coat of varnish.

Very nearly there and it's looking pretty sweet! Hope she appreciates it!

A DVD player. Don't laugh, at the back; this was the year DVD's came out (1995) and it cost a small fortune at the time. My wife's always been a huge film fan and the chance to see films in such quality was amazing.

I might buy her one again this year, and remind her that once it was the most amazing thing she'd ever seen.

Not Christmas, but for our anniversary which is December 23rd.

Apparently it's a Steel anniversary so I'm hoping (fat chance) for a new bike!

Anyway, Zoe is a history teacher (with social history as her thing) and loves Edinburgh so I've got her a Victorian steel key from one of the old town tenement buildings - I'll present it as a keyring for her school keys.

Full of that smug feeling when you know you've got something 'odd' as a gift but know it's going to be just right for the person you've bought it for.

Mrs PB was dropping hints about getting a chainsaw for Christmas, she wanted a lightweight one to prune our almond and olive trees. We were in the local agri shop the other day and she appeared with one that she thought would be ideal. I pointed out that it was a non working toy!! Yes you can buy quite realistic toy chainsaws in Spain.
After going on a ladies only mountain bike ride last week, she came back lusting after some Sidi shoes like one of the others had so that's trumped the chansaw until her birthday in Feb.

For her birthday this year, I arranged for about 10 of my wife's friends to unexpectedly "drop-in" after the kids were in bed.

In 16 years of being together, I've never managed to do / get her something that she enjoyed so much. 🙂

A silver necklace, custom engraved with something hand-written by me in Ukrainian (she is Ukrainian, I am not, hence it's extra special that I learnt how to write 'I love you')

Also a pair of earrings, they are blue/purple hearts, depending on the light, we have a joke that she loves purple when she says she doesn't, as she buys a lot of stuff in purple...

Although apparently that didn't count as her 40th present, she bought it herself, so I had to come up with something else.

A few years back my girlfriend (then wife, now ex-wife) was skint. She was from America and hadn't been able to go back to see her family for about 18 months.
I arranged it with her work, parents and siblings and bought flights for her, leaving for a fortnight the day after her birthday.

I got her something really nice for our anniversary once. She had been a rower during a year at Cambridge Uni. Her boat team had won a race where they beat 4 other boats in a row. This allows you to have some kind of ceremonial paddle made up by the college. She'd always wanted it but again, too expensive for her to have bothered with.
I called up the college she was at and tried to get one made. They were useless and had lost all the records. Plus it would take "about 2 years". Em, nut.

I'd met one of her pals from college at their wedding who'd had one made up. Got her to take a pic of it for me, went to the local uni and bought a paddle off them, stuck it out the back of my MX5 and drove it across town to a fancy signwriter and got him to paint it all up in proper gold leaf and everything.

The studio he worked in was having an open day on our anniversary and I said we should go down as we knew another artist who worked in there. At the time we were redoing the kitchen in our wee flat and she was freaking out/well pissed off.
So we went down and as we went around the different studios, I said "why don't we look in this signwriters" after having arranged for it to be finished and on display.
Again, well chuffed.

Last year I got Mrs. S two ticket for the Coronation St. Tour. Took her and our granddaughter to the studio and then on to Trafford Park. It earned me mega brownie points and I got to look round the science museum .

That's great stuff! Assuming she's into vintage wooden kayaks and it's not a Homer Simpson bowling ball type effort of course...

Custom sized, quite small Shand Stoater frame for her Christmas this year, now built up as a flat bar, disc braked tourer. She absolutely loves it. Planning a couple of weeks in either the Alps or northern Spain next June...

Wife and two preceding GFs had birthdays on Christmas Eve (yes, I chat up pissed women at parties...).
25 years of making every present special and not lumping then into one joint present. Probably the one that went down best was a necklace and earrings to match the wedding rings she'd designed.
Gold and silver. No pearls involved.

Eternity ring on birth of first offspring. It was a very unusual design, on show in the window of an old Oxford jewellers and hopelessly out of any sane price range for a struggling post doc. Of course I bought it on the Monday, stored it in the garage, saved my lunch money and scrimped. Presented it after the birth.

Second favourite was the Tiffany diamond necklace I bought for her fortieth. I still remember telling the shop that it couldn't be too ostentatious as she'd never wear it. She seldom takes it off!

Cor, my missis would be quite dismissive if I gifted her a Cartier / Tiffany 'object'. I did design / have a pendant made for our first anniversary, white gold & a black opal (which matches/compliments her engagement ring).

On the lead-up to our wedding I designed some diamond earrings and had them made (in secret, obviously) - white gold, short single drop with the diamond at the end. I then got the maid of honour to give them to her when getting ready on the wedding morning, to wear for the ceremony. That got me in trouble as she wasn't expecting anything, cried, and very nearly ruined her make-up!

Then, for our tenth anniversary I saved up and had a necklace made to match the earrings. Had to sneak the earrings out from her jewellery drawer a couple of times to show the jeweller, saving up and paying was tricky as we do most stuff out of the joint account.

For our anniversary we got a babysitter for the weekend, went up to Auckland - fancy hotel, nice dinner out, Cirque du Soleil tickets. As she was getting ready I brought out the necklace. She nearly cried this time too, except this time in embarrassment as she hadn't brought the matching earrings. The wedding present earrings. On a night out for our 10th wedding anniversary. Bloody useless, that woman. Doesn't deserve me!

To be fair I'm slightly annoyed at myself, I should have foreseen her uselessness and checked that she hadn't left the earrings behind...

Made a framed picture of a heart made out of a 20p coin from every year since she was born for her 30th.
Took quite a while to get all of the coins and I had to buy a special one for 1986 as for some reason that year they didn't release any.
But she loved the thought and it only cost me about £10 in total (I did get her other stuff as well, I'm not that tight!)
