I refuse to wear a bumbag out on the bike, I don't like seat-bags as they tend to swing about, and plus - you can't hear it if it rings. Yet every time it ends up in my pocket or tucked in my waistline (if i'm wearing cycle shorts), it ends up on the floor, with yet another crack.

Can we not just bring back the 5110 and be done with smartphones altogether? Best options for securing your mobile please?!

ta muchly

Get a LoveMei case - solid as a rock. But heavy too.

What bike?
Get a better seat bag, proper ones don't move. Don't answer phone when your riding?

Samsung Xcover3.

Pretty tough phone. Waterproof and withstand drops and knocks without needing a protective case

Always my preferred solution.

Microsoft killed Nokia, that's what happened.

Plus the obsession with stupidly large and stupidly thin smart phones. Bendable and breakable.

Anyway, on a bike, never put it in the pocket. Crash and it will take the impact. Backpack if you have one. Not sure if you don't. I sometimes think about resurrecting an old Nokia for rides.

Microsoft killed Nokia, that's what happened.

Nokia did a pretty good job of nobbling themselves long before MS got involved. They didn't bring out a flippy clamshell phone the year everyone else did -and in that year - they went from being the best selling phone manufacturer in the world to not even the best selling manufacturer in Finland. They handed a huge swathe of their market to their competitors and have been on the back foot ever since.

Can we not just bring back the 5110

They haven't gone anywhere. If you want one buy one.

Better shorts is one answer, I'm not into strapping crap to my bike. I use Dakine, Mavic and Sombrio shorts which all have really deep square pockets accessed from the top, not the side, so the phone can't fall out. I also have some Polaris and Specialized waterproof shorts with zip pockets.

Generally I do the normal thing and stick it out of the way in my backpack but if I'm riding when I should be working or want to take photos it goes in a decent pocket.

Life Proof case for the phone. Waterproof and pretty all round resilient. I use my phone on site and probably drop it a minimum of once per day and I've not cracked a screen or killed it yet. I do view cases as wear items and expect to get 12-18months out of a lifeproof case but it's a small price to pay and is only equal to one phone insurance excess.

I have a moto g, it's pretty crap tbh but it does seem to be impervious to all harm. I think it takes account of that fundamental subatomic force, perversity, if I ever get a nice phone I break it or lose it instantly, when I have one I hate it lasts forever.

Yes, you can. Did you even check what's available? Just had a look on EE and for a tenner on PAYG you can get a Nokia non-smart phone with up to 36 days standby time!

Or just put your existing phone somewhere where you won't drop it. Really not a complex problem to solve!

Am I the only person who's never broken or even cracked a phone? (I realise I'm probably seriously jinxing myself here!) 🙂 And yes I've dropped them many times & had countless MTB stacks with phones in my pocket/jersey! Decent case helps of course.

Mine just gets buried somewhere in the decathlon branded camelbak thingy.
Inside a freezer bag if I'm worried about it getting wet.
Or, if I'm on the road bike then in a stem bag that's quite well padded.
Moto G 3rd gen - supposedly waterproof/resistant but never tested it beyond the odd splash of rain.

Just put it in the back pocket of your jersey.

zilog - I've only ever broken one smartphone. It was under the quilt when I knelt on it. The combination of 15st of me and a nice soft mattress gave it a good bend and the screen was no more! 😳

Maybe the manufacturers thought that if they sell indestructible phones they would sell fewer phones in the long run....

I sometimes think about resurrecting an old Nokia for rides.

Have done exactly that. It stays turned off inside a small dry bag. It's my "get out of jail free card"!

Why do you need a smartphone when out riding?

A Garmin Edge 810 outsmarts any phone based nav system
A Casio G Shock watch tells me the time
A small bombproof/waterproof camera takes all the pics I need without having to worry about a flimsy smart phone

...ah ... I hear the cries now, "Strava", "Social Media Updates"!! ...

+1 most of that. And you can still "Strava" using a Garmin. Turn on, track ride and forget about it, then sync with Strava later.

Live social media updates are largely useless where I ride as signal is usually non existent. Just about enough for a call, and that's key as had a few occasions to call an ambulance. A phone battery drained by apps is no use in an emergency.

I do use the smartphone for casual photos though. My "bombproof" compact camera coped with a lot but didn't cope with my major crash and is still bulky compared to a phone. That said it still works, just the screen is shattered. Have an old Nokia N80 which did reasonable pictures and still sturdy for a slider phone, but being a slider that did eventually break. Contact gone inside somewhere.

I don't bother much these days but have taken my SLR in my big backpack a fair bit in the past, both riding and skiing. It's coped with many crashes 😀 . Has a small cosmetic chip on the flash now but it's done well for a 10+ year old camera that's been chucked about a lot.

...exactly that! Keep your phone to make phone calls if you need to ...nowt else

Might be a bit old school on this one, but I suspect there's a massive difference in attitude on this one depending on entry route into MTB! If you're old like me, come from a mountaineering and paddling background, then you're attitude is likely to be different to the "Glentress Generation"

OMG the 5210 was EPIC! You could charge it over night and it would literally last for WEEKS!!!
PS - whoever asked - i'm on a roadbike so not ideal for hanging stuff off. Thought about one of those armband thingys, but quite like the look of the Lifeproof case.

I think Alpin nailed it - looks like manufacturers know what they're doing! >
Making stuff break so you buy their next model!

My attitude comes from amount of ambulances required 😀

Also from personal experience is when it's your turn to take a trip and you're unconscious / concussed, make sure you have emergency contact(s) on your phone under ICE and/or on the lock screen if you can set some text there. Likewise you can do that with a Garmin. From experience, having the phone locked with a PIN and no way anyone can get into it is not much help when emergency services or hospital need to contact family.

What maps did you use on it? What was the camera quality like? How was it for Strava? 🙂

I want a tiny computer in my pocket. Or camelback.

I could manage without one, but since I've never broken a phone out riding, there's no need 🙂

Don't JCB make tough phones? Has a quick search. Yes, yes they do 🙂

Lifeproof. Turns your iPhone into a tough phone. Used one on various phones for a few years now and no issues. Been underwater with one and fine. I like the ability to wash my phone in the sink from time to time when it gets grubby too!!
