Ok so I've just been told I'm having a hernia op on th 14th of dec and won't be able to do anything for six weeks.
I'm a self employed bricklayer so it's goin to hit my pocket quite hard.
Have you guys any ideas of things I could do to earn a few quid? It doesn't have to be mega money just something to keep me ticking over.
I'm also after something to keep me busy maybe study something that will help for the future.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Cheers Ben;)
Lots of temp shop work at that time of year. Ditto sorting office. Start looking for it now though - although if the op is on the 14th I wouldn't have too much hope of holding down much in the way of work for the first 10 days or so- as in the main rush up to xmas. The pain relief you'll be taking in the first week or so will keep you pretty lethargic
I think you've timed it well to be honest - I doubt you're missing out on the cream of your year's brick laying opportunities through the xmas and new years bank hols. I was careful to schedule my hernia op for around the same time a few years back as xmas/new year / early jan is always the doldrums for me work-wise
If its a keyhole rather than open surgery you should be pretty mobile within 4 weeks.
fallow time for wet trades, hernia's, i've delayed mine, like you trying to wangle it over winter-- kick back and relax-- read, come on here ,scratch your nuts, but have some time out-- all i've spoke to who have had it have had pain for a while, and then some , fingers crossed for ya.
I'm also after something to keep me busy
For the first couple of weeks my GF would take me on a drive out each day for coffee and cake. Getting in and out of a car twice was my physical limit and two short journeys and a cake were the limit of my endurance. I can now picture my twilight years. Traffic calming measures became knowns as "nnnnnnnnnnnyuuuuuuuuurgh! ****ing humps!!!".
In the third week I was pushing cars out of the snow. Week four I was shifting my neighbours wood burning stove which is nearly as tall as I am. Shes a surgeon though so if anything came undone she promised she could lay me out of the dining table and patch me up with a carving knife and shoelaces.
One thing I did find though - after a long lay-off mostly slouched on the sofa - the first bit real work you do you will really, really jigger your back.
Cheers guys it's interesting to hears different storys/views.
Please keep them coming.
I've had 2 hernia ops and been back at work after 3 weeks on both occasions . You will have to take it steady , is there any way you could get someone to labour for you ? Maybe a youngster from a local building college course looking for some work experience ?
Take the time to get it healed then take it steady when you go back. Like lolly suggests get a labourer to do all heavy lifting. You could also try online poker, sell some stuff on eBay or sign up for medical testing!
I really didn't want to be reading a thread li this about hernia's, I'm getting one sorted in a couple of weeks and it looks likes wont be doing much afterwards!
claim sickness benefit, housing benefit etc, before they all disapear for ever.
sell weed-
All good ideas I think 😉 wisepranker let us know how you get on and good luck!
Clinical drug trials. Seriously. Safe as houses, pays well - the more you're inconvenienced the more it pays, but £1k+ per week for many.
Njee ur right. Did three seperate ones when I was at uni for extra moolah. Totally safe, 3 square meals. Bit boring but you're earning and not spending. Although dunno if they'll have someone after an operation.
Totally safe

Saying that, I've known a couple of people who've done trials and survived so they can't be that bad!
Not directly relevant, but if they give you tramadol or similar opiate based painkillers, keep a dream diary. I had some awesome dreams but never wrote them down, most disappointing.

One would hope they've tightened things up a bit since then, they were totally unprepared for anything going wrong and when it did, the delays were ridiculous.
Start to learn a programming language? A spoken language? You should be able to make a good start on either of those in six weeks...

Fraud, definitely still worth doing if you're smart and look respectable.
