Yeah I had never heard of the 23rd/24th being celebrated until last week. Working in Norway where big celebrations are due, Swedes are meant to have the best party though!. Though our local one has been put back to Friday for drinking purposes.

It was a confusing conversation me saying midsummer being the solstice usually 21st, and them saying no it is midtsommer on 24th. Wiki did get to the bottom of it though.

Erm...I dunno. You might want to address that question to the person who started the thread perhaps?

Its midsummer day innit.

So why celebrate it?

Why not?
For me it will be an afternoon roadie ride with the Limoges FFC clubs, then in the evening we shall be going to a reception being held to honour all the riders from the Haute Vienne who rode at the National VTT Champs don't cha know. Now, although my ride was a total disaster, Mrs Strato did a storming ride. So I shall be driving, she shall be celebrating.

After that we shall sit in the garden until the very last ray of sunlight is gone.

SB 🙂
PS - juan, I know not about this jumping over the fire. What is it?

True.

Not really no and certainly can't wee why it needs to be celebrated.

Nothing 'needs' to be celebrated - we do it because it's life-affirming and fun surely?

There's usually a reason to celebrate and the start of a season isn't much of a reason.

Everything to celebrate! It's my birthday. Strange mind, I can't think where the wife can have hidden the Mojo sl frame I asked for.

Feel free to celebrate seems odd you think that'll be others on what's just a day. Must be said you description of celebration is how I treat my days off before the kids came along. Ride, beers and continue until the sun goes down and sometimes until it came back up.

I'll be riding from the Peoples Republic of Mancunia to the faded Victorian splendour of Blackpool and back, hoping to get about 120 miles in.

Nights are drawing in now, best get on with it!

I always celebrate the solstices by drinking something alcoholic made at the other end of the year. This year it was some wine from our own vine, so it is cheating slightly, made last autumn equinox, rather than summer solstice.
I'll make something tasty for the winter in the next few days - dandelion and ginger wine maybe, or there is some nice beer a-brewing, but that usually doesn't last very long

I celebrated the summer solstice by doing my last (daylight-ish) downhill run in the woods at quarter to ten. (a fringe benefit of living in the arse end of the south west is that the sun sets a bit later. 😀 )Staying out late on a dry and dusty track without the need for lights is reason enough to celebrate for me.

Sun sets later in the North not the south.

I love her, and her French sister whom I'm going for my regular tryst with in a few weeks time.
Perhaps I'll tell her about it tommorrow evening as we hoon down the Dan yr Ogof descent for a beer in The Ancient Briton.

Is two-timing in this way a crime? I'm faithful through the Welsh mist, sleet and winter clag for 9 months each year...

I needed to get up at 2 as my wife was away on a school trip and needed a run to school (behave, shes a teacher) so I decided what with it being a special day to see the dawn on top of Meikle Bin, a local hill. The weather here in Glasgow yesterday was cracking so I thought this morning had a fair chance of being nice!

It looked like this:

I was in cloud from the car park to the top. And back down.

I loved it! 😀
