I’ve been with Apple ever since the 3GS, so many years understanding how iPhones work. I don’t like the shared headphone/charger port - mine is now so loose after repeated use that I can’t get the phone to charge without holding the ****ing wire.

I could really do with the option to have 2 sims in one phone, so was looking at the S10.

Is it as good as it felt in the shop? Is there anything that will frustrate me? The last Android we had in the house was a bargain basement phone...the s10 feels really slick...is it?

Thanks for any pointers

Clear the pocket fluff out of the lightning port. 2 minutes with a paper clip will save you a fortune...

Huawei just fixed my Mate 10 Pro under warranty for this, worth a try if under 2yrs old (or over).

Can't comment on the S10 but my Huawei is very good, so the Samsung must be amazing.

I did that Jam Bo...(several times). Also put tape in the hole to make it smaller...and followed the instructions of the videos on the first 3 or 4 pages of google that deal with this issue.

The fact is, that charging daily, and using wired headphones throughout the day has shagged it.

I have lost my love for Apple....

Do yourself a favour and move to android.

Pros:  Cheaper,  mass storage ability,APK files, no longer have everything ringing on everything when one i device gets a message, sd cards, headphone jack, more control on how your display looks, dual sim, better battery life, more apps, better quality of life, more sex, better PB's on zwift etc etc

Cons: ...................................................................................................................................................erm............................................................................well.............................................................................................................................................aneeeyway.......

But get the S10e. Better fingerprint sensor, cheaper and no stupid curved screen

Thanks...

But ‘more sex’ suggests I get any! 😂

All I'd miss is the ability to iMessage and share Apple stuff with the only 2 people I really message - best mate and girlfriend. I've got a Samsung here (S7 I think) which I'm tempted to switch to as my iphone screen has gone very weird (texting is almost impossible) but cos they're on iPhones, I can't bring myself to make the change. Silly really!

Was on holiday with 2 friends . The moon on the sea was fantastic . The galaxy S10 took an amazing picture, my friend with the latest iPhone could barely capture anything.

I'd buy the galaxy purely for that .....but everytime I log onto my bank it has a security warning for s10s

Thats why you want the s10e version - it doesn't have the stupid sensor in the display which is causing all the security problems.

Just swtiched the S7 on - the screen looks nicer than my iPhone 6s and man, it's so much nicer to type on!

I'm a week or so into ownership of a Oneplus 7t Pro. IT's fantastic.
I really missed my Oneplus 3t after moving to Google Pixel 3 a while back. I decided to get back into the Oneplus phone and it makes the Pixel feel pretty low rent tbh.
It's superfast, great battery, 90hz display is well nice.

Out of interest, I looked at the price for an Iphone 11 with 256gb storage, same as my OP.
£1300!! I knew they were pricy, but didn't appreciate just how much. I haven't bought anything Apple for a few years now.

So, in answer to the OP, you'll gain around £600 by moving from Apple to Android with an equivalent top end phone.

Thanks all, the dual sim swings it...I’ll look at the s10e (it’s even cheaper)...

So long Apple!

Which latest iPhone? Does it have Night Mode, and if so, was it switched on?
I took this photo out in my garden last week, hoping I’d catch one of the hedgehogs which I could hear, but didn’t see one. It was taken at half-past midnight...

I didn’t, but it’s around a tenner more expensive per month, much less storage...and will still have the shared charge/earphone port.

Count Z . Judging by your picture I’d say night mode was off. I shall mention it next time I seem them and we can have a rematch.

And you won’t miss iMessage. I don’t know any of my friends or colleagues that use it anymore. Whatsapp or Telegram are the defaults.

I went from an IPhone SE to a cheap Samsung A8 and it’s still a brilliant phone 2 years on. I don’t know what I’d replace it with, maybe a dual sim A90 or OnePlus 7t Pro. But it’s far from showing any aging.

Dunno how you were planning to get the new phone but Samsung are doing some good trade in deals through their UK site.

Sounds like what you need is a can of compressed air and some Bluetooth headphones.

^ tried the compressed air. I’ve tried everything but the port is shagged, if I hold the phone upright the cable just falls out!

Get something with induction charging, to avoid future problems with dodgy charging ports.

I have Samsung Note 9 (use dual sims now) that is about 11 months old which is brilliant, but I accidentally scratched the screen while putting in the pocket with keys ... arrghhh ... just a tiny deepish scratch at the corner but still ... tried to polish it out but somehow managed to polish the surface protection whatever off.

I only have to charge it once a day if I watch youtbue otherwise on standby I think I can manage two days without charge.

Whatsapp is the norm for all my communication now ...

Samsung S7 here, had it for 4 years, I'll keep it til it dies.

None of my iphones lasted past the contract, YMMV.

I went the other way recently. All my family are on iPhones so I did the same.
I had the Samsung S8 Edge, only rubbish aspect was the screen edge, It’s active while you’re holding it.
As a fairly dumb user, it didn’t make much difference. Cameras were pretty much the same, battery life about the same, price also very similar.
I found Apple apps a bit more stable than Android, especially for offline use, Spotify would occasionally not work offline, games would crash, but not overly often or majorly problematic.

Life becomes much easier.

You know longer have to say things like, "Have you seen my iPhone?" and can just say, "Have you seen my phone?"

I went the other way for a couple of months this summer, before hurrying back to the world of Android. I found the whole iOS thing to be irritating - no major changes, just lots of minor differences that made the whole thing feel clunky. I suspect that if you're a habitual iOS user you'd probably get the same feeling, just the other way round 🙂

Take phone to Apple store.
Ask “the charger port won’t hold the cable, can you help”
Receive “yes sir, give me 5 mins I’ll get our techs to look at it”.
5 mins later phone has been put under their microscope and fully cleaned out good as new.

That was my experience. No receipt needed.

Done.

I went the other way, a couple of years ago.

I charge my iPhone 8 wirelessly which cuts down on the number of times I use the port. Still ok 2 years on.

If I’m out on a solo night ride I use the location sharing feature so that my wife can see where I am if I’m late back. That, and the fact that everyone else in my house has iPhones, will keep me coming back.

Been an iPhone user for years and got seduced by Android. Bought a Samsung S9+ and was massively underwhelmed especially with the camera. Screen was nice though. Gave it to the wife and went back to iPhone

I bank with Barclays and use Apple Pay a lot so I don’t carry a wallet at work. Barclays isn’t compatible with Android Pay and it really annoyed me

I still use a Samsung S6 for trainer calibration, a backup for running training software (TR and more recently Zwift), and for my son to use to look on Lego Life. Only reason I don't still use it as my daily phone is the battery life runs down mighty quickly when the screen is on.

I replaced it with a Moto G6 which for the money is decent. It has always been buggy as hell though but for 1/5th the money you can sort of accept it. The camera isn't anywhere near as good. No idea if more recent Motos are better in terms of bugs or camera.

The one thing I do not miss is the Samsung software - bloatware aplenty, updates come far later than cleaner Android setups, and some of the Moto features are very useful (attentive display, volume buttons to skip tracks) - all of these can be done through 3rd party apps but are rolled into one with bringing data risks.

Either way I can't justify the current Samsung prices for a phone when the Moto does the job. That's the crux of it. If I travelled and took loads of photos then it becomes a slightly more interesting proposition.

You can turn that off in the settings.   I have both iPhone for work, S8 for personal use and that for me is the definition of the difference.  The iPhone just is, the Samsung you can do what you like with it.   The main feature for me is that a decent Android phone - unless you want to willy wave to your mates - is far less expensive than an iPhone e.g.  Moto G7’s knocking around for £130 currently.

Having dropped my S8 several times I can’t bear the thought of juggling a £1000 phone in the pub, in the back pocket of a bike jersey or at a campsite.  In fact my S8 has been in a muddy forest puddle after Jnr took a photo for me then fell over on his way back up a forest trail.  Lucky it’s waterproof eh...

I've just switched from iPhone to Google Pixel 2
Here are my thoughts after 3 weeks.

Pros:

Cheaper - especially better camera for the money with the Pixel (I paid £170 refurbished) I could have got an iPhone 7 for the same money, but I wasn't tempted.

More responsive screen - fewer typing errors and especially that initial startup code entry - iphone would never catch the first digit - got really annoying.

Better integration between google apps. I prefer having Google Maps as the default integrated maps instead of the Apple maps. So it becomes much more useful in contacts/websites/etc.
Gmail is better in the phone than the app was on iOS too.

NFC and finger recognition in general is quicker. It could be that this was improved in later iPhones - not sure.

Cons

Far more notifications. Wow - the number at the beginning was unbelievable! You have to turn off notifications individually for about 30 things. Easy to do, as you just click on the notification as it comes through and turn it off, but it seems there are endless categories of notifications.

Sound quality through the speakers is much less refined. Same quality over headphones.

Everything feels a little less calm. It's all a little jumpier and more manic. Definitely prefer the more mature, grown-up feeling of iOS.

I keep noticing new deals for android phones. All of a sudden the market is huge, whereas before, it was very easy to feel settled with the iPhone you'd got. YMMV

Equal

Pretty much everything else is equal across the formats once you get used to the idiosyncrasies of the os. They've been copying each other for so long that a surprising amount feels natural.

Apps seem largely the same. Strava, etc have a few little differences, but nothing particularly good or bad.

Only issue I've had with Samsung is the battery swelling up on my S8 and forcing the rear cover off. Seems to have been a problem with yhe S7 as well. I wonder if it was related to fact i almost exclusively induction charge it, it did get quite hot sometimes. Managed to replace it with a new S8+ for less than £400 from Amazon, its still alot of phone for a lot less than the latest model of anything. Son has an A8 which cost £170, does everything he needs and looks quite good. Personally im not sure why people pay top whack for the latedt phone, want the best camera, buy a cheaper phone and proper camera.

If it just needs cleaning then I can’t imagine why not.
My iPhone 7 - I had a new battery put in by Apple and it runs like new again, 3 years old. 1hr and £45.

Worth noting re typing that you can install different keyboards on Android, not sure if you can do this on Apple. Samsung's default keyboard is ok but doesn't have a full stop on the main page - wtf? So I use Google's keyboard.

Also, if you want to clean fluff out of a port, use a bristle plucked from a stiff brush - not something metal. Works well and does not damage anything. I cleaned a load of fluff out of my USB-C port when I thought it was coming loose.

I use wireless charging on my S9 because I think it's safer - less chance of having it knocked and broken, and I want to keep the phone as long as possible. However I think the battery getting a bit warmer might take some life out of the batter. But then the temperature is limited to 45 which is meant to be safe so dunno. Batteries are a standard replacement option though unlike charger ports.

Personally im not sure why people pay top whack for the latedt phone, want the best camera, buy a cheaper phone and proper camera.

Because you don't want to have to carry a camera around everywhere to get good impromptu snaps, I'd have thought this was obvious.

Oh and dual sim works really well on Samsung - I have one.

... and that's exactly what I meant in my final comment "I suspect that if you’re a habitual iOS user you’d probably get the same feeling, just the other way round". I find it amusing that @AlexSimon doesn't like the Android notifications as one of the main things I disliked about iOS were the poorly implemented notifications. He's also saying iOS felt more "mature and grown up", when I found it a bit childish in the way it's locked down and takes a whole load of decisions away from you.

And I can't say he's wrong, we're both making very subjective decisions based largely on what we're used to. But, he's wrong 🙂

Yep, my location is permanently shared with my wife and vice versa, Google maps feature. It also shows me her phone battery level so I know if she's not answering her phone because it's run out of battery, rather than she doesn't want to talk to me 😉

So are people saying it's build-up cack in the charging port that's preventing the charger or headphone plugs being properly retained?

I'd assumed the socket on my Huawei had just got worn baggy through constant use. They didn't say what they'd actually done to fix it.

My iPhone is in its third year…would the Apple store still want to fix it?

You don't get if you don't ask.

IME yes. if you look at the side of a lightning connector, it has an inset section on each side. if you look inside a lightning port it has two springs. its quite a positive engagement as opposed to a USB-C which seems to rely on an interference fit.

if the connector can't go far enough in, it won't engage properly and be retained. fluff gets compacted in there and builds up over time until you reach the point of hit and miss charging. if the springs have failed or jammed then you might get the same behaviour.

PS. i don't care much for if the OP wants an iphone or an android phone. i don't really get the tribal thing. I keep getting iphones because I don't pay for them and change is hard...;-)

It could be. I think USB-C has a dimple in the middle and a little spring part in the plug - so there is a positive click when you push it in - but only if you push it far enough. With fluff in the back of the port, it stops the plug going in all the way, so the click doesn't engage, and it just falls back out. On mine the action of plugging it in every day had compacted the pocked fluff to a hard layer of felt at the back of the port - in only about 6 months or so of use.

I took it to the local phone guy this morning. Definitely not a build up of cack...it’s loose. ‘Baggy’ was the word he used...he says he sees it a lot.

He said he could change the port, I’m going to carry on looking at shiny phones though!

of course he does. how much does he charge for 'fixing it' 😉

ps. i did a search for 'loose' lightning ports (and USB-C). almost every result points to cleaning out the connector port...

Thats why you want the s10e version – it doesn’t have the stupid sensor in the display which is causing all the security problems.

Fix already issued some time back. I'm not convinced it ever was an issue except when using the cheapest shite screen protectors. I tested all the ones I had knocking about prior to the software update and none would reproduce the fault.

I own an S10 and TBH I would rather have an external sensor, but the in-display one works fine.

I still think the curved screen is a gimmick, however next to the S10e it feels a much more premium device.

Samsung does weird things - like it's on silent, but still does a blinkypbipbip noise.
Or it's not on silent and doesn't alert when I get a text - or show the text on the screen until I open it (yes, I've turned on notifications for messages). And it's always got some useless bloody information on the screen before I unlock it.
Then again, the iPhone did a lot more shitty things than that (like put ****ing unicorn emoji stickers on the keyboard without me asking and not letting me delete the stupid things! I'm 55!)

Thanks to this thread I was encouraged to clean the approx. 1kg of fluff from my lightning port and now have a phone that plugs in properly. Hooray!

OP - I've thought about this, and the main things I'd miss would be the integration with my laptop (I love typing text messages on an actual keyboard) and the ability to share media/apps with my wife.

That said, I'm sure when my phone does die I'll think about android, as there have been some persuasive arguments on this thread.

As others have alluded to, it's just a different system that does broadly the same thing. The biggest issue you'll face is familiarity, whether you "know" Apple or "know" Android, moving to a different platform will come with a learning curve. It's not wholly different from moving from a Windows PC to a Mac or vice versa. That and you'll lose any apps you've paid for on the other system, of course.

Purely personally, I'd avoid Samsung. I don't really get the love for them, I've owned two now and they've both annoyed the piss out of me. Though my S5 has been worlds better since I binned off the stock ROM with all the Samsung shovelware shite and installed something that's received an update in the last half-decade.

The Android messages app now has a web interface, so you can type text messages on a proper keyboard. https://messages.google.com/web

I use both daily - my personal phone is iOS iPhone 7 and work phone is a Samsung cover 4, or something like that.

I find the Samsung unit clunky and the screen not as responsive to touch, especially with cold fingers when working outside, the different keyboard layout between the two is a little trying sometimes too.

Android doesn’t seem to do the double click for a full stop when typing, perhaps android users don’t use punctuation as much as iOS users?

Android is particularly shite with WiFi calling, it’ll drop out on every call unless I’m within a couple of metres and in sight of the main router, similarly it won’t let me have WiFi calling unless I’m in proximity to the router. It ignores the booster boxes completely. IME, iOS is way more stable and reliable in this regard.

I don’t want to **** about with my communication devices, I want/need them to work and again, IME, iOS winds me up far less than the android, which tends to be a daily occurrence.

Naturally, YMMV 😁

I went off Samsung after the s3.
Mainly due to bloat.

Currently on an LG G6, can't fault it.

On my Lenovo, which I think runs the Google keyboard a double space at the end of the sentence adds the fullstop, the space after it and caps lock for the first letter of the next sentence. It just works...

All of that stuff about wi-fi calling dropping out sounds like a device issue, rather than an Android issue.

If the Samsung is the xcover4 (never heard of it until I googled cover4) it can be picked up for £170. It's hardly surprising that it doesn't stack up against an iPhone 7. Like comparing a Merc E-class to a Dacia Duster....

We have Samsung phones and tablets at work, and the bloody things are always playing up! Part of it is because they’re all on different varieties of Android, and often upgrades pushed out by head office IT to fix problems will fix problems on some phones/tablets, but either break things on others, or introduce new ones, or else they just go wrong because they’re just rubbish devices.
They have got some Huawei devices, which are apparently much more stable, and the bloke in charge of systems for all the sites is trying to get all the Samsung devices replaced by Huawei, but there’s a fair amount of inertia involved.
We just want devices that communicate with the site Wi-fi consistently and send and retrieve data, and the Samsung crap we have just doesn’t do that.
FWIW, my iP11 Pro Max is just bloody amazing, the Face ID is incredibly fast and accurate, the cameras are superb, and battery life is the best I’ve ever had from a smartphone, two to three days from a charge, and I haven’t changed the way I use my phone. In the past, using satnav, even with a cable plugged in*, the draw on the battery would kill the phone after an hour or so; I had to drive to Bristol today, and I had TomTom running, just in case of traffic issues, for an hour each way, plus I’ve been using it for reading during my breaks, and the battery is at 68%.
*The problem is most car USB and 12v adaptors only give 5w max, some less than that, a smartphone using satnav needs at least double that.

@stumpy01 - I reckon you’ve covered it with comparability of the two devices, the work phone is just not a nice thing to use, unfortunately it’s been my first taste of android for about 6/7 years and it’s left a bad taste... as it were 😉

My previously issued work phone had a windows os and that was truly shocking, so small mercies 😁

I’m not saying that iOS is perfect for me either but at least there’s a choice!

I was forced to go the other way (Moto G5S to my wife’s old iPhone SE) after dropping my Android in the toilet and I can’t wait til I can afford a new Android phone again. I mostly hate how Apple forces you to do things in their crappy way rather than how you want. No expandable media with a simple SD card slot. Lack of a file browser etc. Feels like a fisher price phone. Non existent battery life. Terrible keyboard. It’s just a bit shit.

You don’t get if you don’t ask.

In my personal experience Apple will let you make an appointment, send you away for a couple of hours then put the phone back together (assumiung they even opened it) and say they can't/won't repair it but would you like to buy a new model upgraded whilst you are here.

Took mine to a local repairer and got the battery swapped for £25? last year... and big positive it has headphone jacks...

Reason not to change is 90%+ of messages are iMessage.

If only there were some sort of way to send messages between any operating platform...

You can get waterproof ones now - it's amazing how much peace of mind this gets you!

I've had waterproof android phones for a few years now. Agreed on the peace of mind, though! Just sling it in a jersey pocket on the bike.

Most cheapo ones from garages etc, but it's really easy to find a cheap one that produces much more. We've got one that delivers 28W from a single port, loads on Amazon for a fiver.

We just want devices that communicate with the site Wi-fi consistently and send and retrieve data, and the Samsung crap we have just doesn’t do that.

It's possible there's something up with your site because two Samsungs I've had have never had an issue with wifi anywhere - home, office, public - nor the previous few Motorolas.

I went off Samsung after the s3.
Mainly due to bloat.

Samsung realised this was crap and since then they've reduced bloat a lot.

My word, changing from iphone to Samsung is a damn nightmare.

But! The battery life on the Samsung! It's been on for days now and is still on 67% ! The iphone would've been charged 15 times in the same period 🙂

I don't get all the Apple " it forces you to do things" argument. I have never once done anything on my phone and I thought, I want to do this another way.

I have just gone the other way from Nokia 8 (which runs bog standard Android with no bloat) to iPhone 8 Plus.

They both do the same things, but in slightly different ways.  Honestly either is fine.  The lack of headphone jack is moderately annoying but plenty of phones with android don't have a headphone jack these days.

I found the iPhone annoying as f*** for about 2 weeks until i had reprogrammed my thumbs and brain. Now it's absolutely fine.

My wife and kids are all on apple devices of various ages and the ability to use iMessage, location sharing etc seemlessly is quite handy.

I have a iPhone SE as a work phone so I broadly knew what i was getting into. (I was forced to swap my dumb phone for it as an old Nokia that lasts a week on one charge isn't suitable for someone in my band apparently!  But the iPhone has a off switch too so take that corporate overlords!)

I’ve just literally gone back to iphone from having a Samsung S9. I tried Android and for myself much prefer iOS. The Samsung phone itself was great but Andriod wasn’t for me.

Same, we got given S8’s for work, I had a slightly beaten up 6s at the point so the S8 felt decent. It’s the first Samsung I had that didn’t feel like a cheap plastic toy.

I decided to get an S9 as my own phone. It was ok, but as a long term iOS user, it took a while to get used to where everything was and how it worked. Some good things, some bad. Camera was decent improvement though.

Then we got issued new iPhone 11s and i just find the iOS system so much more intuitive to use, probably from 10 or so years of using it.

Sold the S9 and now have my own 11 as well as a work one. Much prefer it to be fair. Yes it might be locked down more and I can’t mess around with it all, but it’s a phone. I send messages, make calls, take photos and scroll through social media on it. I don’t need to get into the operating system to fanny around and change things, I have zero interest in that.

My word, changing from iphone to Samsung is a damn nightmare.

When I said that, I wasn't so much talking about the usability, more just getting the right apps loaded, contacts switched etc. But, man, the battery life! 😆

I don’t get all the Apple ” it forces you to do things” argument. I have never once done anything on my phone and I thought, I want to do this another way.

Then you're their target audience. And I don't mean that negatively.

Eg, when presented with a choice of three different keyboards, some people will go "oh cool, I get to play with all three and see which I like best" and some will say "three keyboards, that's ridiculous, just give me one which works."

Apple's 'walled garden' approach to absolutely everything is either its biggest strength or its biggest weakness depending on your mindset.

Just had the port replaced on an iphone by the cheapy phone shop in town for £30, done in an hour. If it’s properly broken then this may be worth a try.

It was the same as you describe, had to ‘hold’ the charger at an angle.

Just don't break the screen on a Samsung. Replacements are ridiculously expensive

Favourite tablet: iPad
Phone: Android.
Have thought about getting an Apple watch 5 which means getting an iPhone. But I think I'll Hangfire and see what Google do with Fitbit.
