In Singapore for work and should have some free time over the weekend.

Now I have never had a lot of love for this place, just feels like a big shopping centre surrounded by apartment buildings.

However, I have seen questions on Singapore here before and there were answers with some more positive suggestions on what to do and see.

So can anyone suggest something more interesting than wandering around a shopping centre or getting ripped of in Raffles?

Orchard Towers holds no appeal!

Zoo is good if you like that sort of thing.

There was a guided bike tour of the sights I was tempted by last time I was there.

One of the lads I work with found some mountain bike trails there...
I like Chinatown for food/drink/people watching

Or get a low cost flight out to somewhere more interesting.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a nice oasis of calm. Interesting view of Malaysia too. I like a wander around gardens by the bay. There's some great sculptures and the supertrees are quite a thing, worth going up to the walkway. While in the area you can wands round the F1 track. Chinatown is also good for wander, temples and food. The science centre is one of the best in the world. The fort on Sentosa, the last remaining part of the impregnable Fortress Singapore, tells the story of the invasion and occupation. The touristy things like the zoo, night safari and aquarium are all excellent examples.

Dig out the other threads there are lots of suggestions there. I lived there for two years and there's plenty to do over a weekend, I would most definitely avoid Orchard Road Malls and the Tourist / ex-pat bars of Boat and Clarke Quays and also the awful Marina Bay Sands Hotel

I used to live in Club Street with its original buildings - shop houses - plenty of smaller bars and restaurants there (most with French theme) cafe des sports will probably have the rugby on (in the small hours) Beaujoloas is fun, small bookshop interesting (books are expensive though) Maxwell food court is good, just queue at a place you like the look of and order what the locals are having. China town is over the road, Red Temple and Indian Temple worth a look. Asian Civilisation museum is quite good (boat quay opposite the boats have been gone for 40 years but you can imagine what it was like when it was packed). Arab Quarter and Mosque are worth a stroll, Blue Note (?) bar quite lively. Little India around Mustafa "mall" worth exploring, great curry (authentic) of course. East coast park for a stroll (bit manufacturered for me) various seafood outlets (again just go to busy ones) small beach club called mana mana you can ha e a simple snack or a drink, but of sailing there (foiling moths are cool). If you can stand the heat go in the Bukit Temah nature trail walk. If you want more park like experience the Botanical Gardens or the new ones at Marina Bay are supposed to be good.

If yiu like historical type books try and find a copy of Naked Island (sold in civilisation museum) about Aussie POW or perhaps Land Below the Wind (on Borneo).

Get a bus over to Dempsey Hill(old army base) now full of bars and restaurants but set amongst a load of gardens/wildlife.

Had a enjoyable evening or two in there.

At Dempster, go to Long Beach for the chilli crab.

Also, Din Tai Fung.

As above, Din Tai Fung. Take a hearty appetite.

Also, don't be put off by the way it looks. Looks like a fast food restaurant. Tastes like heaven.

Take a bumboat from Changhi Point to Pulua Udin island and then hire a bike for a little mellow ride around the island.

On Raffles Hotel yes the long bar is a fake, the original was redeveloped. The main hotel is worth a look round, just say you are staying if anyone asks, doorman is one of the most striking I've seen anywhere in the world. The "Tiffin" curry lunch buffet is spectacular not sure if it runs at the weekend. It's also worth noting Raffles is on Beach Road - think about that and the land reclamation if you visit.

Best nighttime view IMO is from the area around the Esplanade (no sign board seafood is excellent but fairly sterilised vs more local places), Italian bar there Bar Rosa is pleasant to sit outside for a beer or a pizza

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I think I might try the guided bike tour and then a few beers on the Esplanade.
