one of my oldest mates is turning 30 soon and i want to get him something to celebrate this 'event' but i dont know what to get him. I've known him for 25yrs and he is the guy responsible for getting me hooked on bikes.

I guess i could get him something bike related but as i dont live near him anymore i dont know what he has and what he doesnt. He has recently bought a *cough* road bike but also has a history of MTBs.

Should i get him something bikey or something non-biking? and has anyone got any ideas?

budget wise i really dont know, might be able to go in with my folks and MsSwoosh so i guess it could be a budget of up to £50 or something.

Ask his GF/Wife if he has one?

If buying him something bike related, I'd steer away from bike components to be honest. Like you say, you don't know what he's got now, and besides a bike component can wear out, or get replaced, relatively quickly. If he's been a mate for that long, surely something lasting, or the opportunity to create some more lasting memories, would be best?

Where does he live? Where do you live? Are you going to the to the Birthday party (assuming there is one)?

My suggestion would be to take him out on a riding weekend somewhere, doesn't need to be expensive, camp out or stay in a hostel or even a B&B, get a couple of good days riding in together!

A watch of some description [G-Shock?] is usually fail-safe

A headset press. I got one for my 30th from a bunch of mates with some other tools, too. They've not stopped borrowing it since...

ok, so i'm thinking of going down the cycle gadget tool type route so was thinking of Park IBeam multitool and/or Park Tools Blue book of Maintenance.

what do people think of these as ideas?

I know he loves the Park Tools so thought that a couple of bits and bobs might help him to get into biking again.

Specific Drinking Utensils.
I got some nice Gleneagles Branded Crystal decanter and glasses for nice whisky drinking sessions.
