I was in exactly this position a couple of weeks ago. Bought an independent bottling of HP, Signatory 1987. Went down very well.

(At the risk of being controversial, I don't believe the regular HP25 is worth it - it's considerably more expensive and if anything, the HP18 is better).

As your 40, its got to be a 40yr old malt. A bit over budget but not impossibly so.

Well I'm no expert on malts, like I'm no expert on MTBing even after 22 years, or a connasewer of red wine after being a p!$$head for even longer, but get this...

There's no such thing as a 'bad one'.

It all depends on your taste buds, bud.

(I even like Laphroaig 1/4 cask, which actually tastes like Listerine.)

Nose & taste, then decide.
