need a new bag for carry on - my camelbak wingman doesnt give enough useful space and ends up puffing out massivly and being a pain in the overhead compartments despite being well under size.

narrowed it down to a timbuk2 messenger

will be used on the bike occasionally but mostly as a travel bag - i want the biggest i can get on the plane with zero hassle - i wont always fill it but i want to have the option to travel without a hold bag when going to meetings and dont need my PPE

medium or large ?

Large.

I have one as my carry on as well, mainly so I can avoid the "Here's my laptop, look, it's in a bag that says "Expensive laptop"" look when I'm travelling! Also really good as a day trip bag when out and about on my travels.

Big enough to take laptop, tablet, phones, chargers and a chnge of clothes/washkit for a two day trip, or to take enough to cover me on a long haul trip as carry on with luggage in teh hold.

Always been able to take it on as carry on luggage on any flight (I don't use so called "low cost" airlines though, so can't comment on those)

"says "Expensive laptop"" look when I'm travelling"

tbh thats half the reason - we go to nigeria and other west african countrys pretty regular , the ability to slip through with a single bag that doesnt say laptop is good.

but conversely the ability to have a bag that says expensive laptop rob me and to loose my works laptop while simultaneously keeping all my OWN shit safe in the other bag is as much of a bonus as having only one bag ..... swings and round abouts - i find a copy of FHM at the top of my bag to be the ticket to getting through customs without loosing stuff 😉
