What shoes do you wear out out?

I've been looking new shoes for I don't know how long - years, decades - but I've no idea what I want. Just Semi-smart shoes for the pub, preferably wider/rounder in shape.

I'm still eeking life out of a pair of 5:10 Dirtbags which I stumbled across years ago as last-in-the-box and they'd stopped making. They're of a style but most importantly the wide shape is why I like them, and don't like narrow equivalents.

I have smarter shoes, (Columbia brown leather boots) but similarly not fussed by anything available to replace them.

I need inspiration please.

Air Max 90’s, or SB Dunks. Or plain white Gazelles.

I also own brogues and some nice leather boots, but they’re for work or somewhere very fancy.

@ton how quickly are the soles wearing down on the Clarks Nature 3s? This has been a weak point on a couple of pairs of shoes I've had lately.

Depends...

Work: Etnies skate shoes

Smart casual: 'gaucho' timberland boots

Smart: depending on the suit, either black Oxfords or brown brogues

Football pundit shoes.

Does anybody know what they actually are?

They all wear them and they’re awful, but I suspect they’re probably some awful brand that only footballers would wear and are about £750 a pair.

This time of year. Brown leather hiking boots.

Summer time.....mostly sandals or flipflops. -maybe my merrell footgloves if It neeeeeds to be a shoe.

If it's fancy fancy my black leather dress shoes.

For context if I'm not in my flip flops or hiking boots it's tan rigger boots or crocs so either are an improvement.

Depends what you want to look like!

Dr Martens are a dependable choice (or Solovair). I like Clarks Desert Treks, or for trainers New Balance are pretty easy to find a decent looking pair. I've also got a pair of Walsh trainers which were pricey but that's because they're made in UK.

Or of course if you're over the age of 110 you could get those shoes Ton mentioned, but you'd need some nice beige slacks to complete the look 😉

Ex-British Army Meindle Desert Fox boots. Bought from eBay virtually unworn for no more than £40, retail for around £170, wore two pairs out, wearing to work, country walks, out to the pub, got two more pairs on the go now.
I also have a couple of pairs of Vans that I wear on the bike, including one pair that have SPuD fittings.

I do have a pair of Redwing Moc Toe boots for smarter wear. Which means with jeans and possibly a smarter shirt than just a tee shirt from a gig or whatever.

I’m of an age where I don’t give a rats ass what people think about the way I dress.

Brown leather Joseph Seigel ankle boots. Very comfy, very old, passable looks, leak like a sieve. Ideal for dry outings. Rest of the time, la Sportiva approach shoes. More weather proof, less passable looks but dry socks! Also have some much smarter black shoes for suit wearing occasions. Ancient things. Probably Jones and have been resoled a couple of times. Uppers still good.

Plain black, structured support, wide-fit, Brooks running shoes (trainers sorry @ton 😉). I have arthritis in both feet and have reached the stage where comfort prevails over any other considerations!! But dammit, I do love the look of a nice pair of tan brogues 🙁

Redwing Moc Toe - useless things. Now about to "invest" in the 4th sole in 18 months at £115 plus, postage. They are as water resistant as flip flops. Going back to Dr Martins pronto. At least with those you know you get a good 18 months out of them.

You're a football pundit I take it? 🤣 I only jest as I've got a pair of Gorals in Horween and gum.

Pair of Redwing Chukkas if I want to go slightly smarter, otherwise I'm into the realms of formal.

I wish, it looks like a cushy job. You don't need to know much about football from what I've seen.

I just assumed everybody had a large selection of trainers. 🤷‍♂️

Not forgetting the golden rule though… your taste in trainers is set in aspic as what you were wearing when you turned 18. It’s just wrong to wear anything designed after that.

I’ve just treated myself to a lovely set of Diadora Equipe, which have the year they were designed (1975) emblazoned on the back of them. I was only 5 at that time, but the point stands. I was wearing similar when I was 18  😃

Five ten trail Cross

Five ten sleuth

Loake boots if it's super fancy. I've not been out in them for several years as they are crap on flat pedals and is rather bike than take the bus.

I managed to get my wife onto the tandem last time we went out together

Trickers brogues or monkey boot would be my shout, a big one off spend but it's once, and paid back for in time v cheaper pairs, I like how they look better over time, not worse.

This is really the only overly spendy thing I fork out for, I don't have a matching Rolly or anything but British made and worth it for me.

Various Timberland boots - not the classic honey monster ones, more the nice chukka or chelsea boots. So comfy and really rather durable for 'cheap' boots.

I do still have a soft spot for these bad boys, but... hmmm... not sure I'd be wearing them now.

What really blows me away is that i paid £65 for them!  At age 17!  Adjusted for inflation that's about £130!

Camper Pelotas?

Seem to go with most trousers, jeans, etc.  Not shorts though, well at least not with my skinny ankles.

Edit - reasonably wide in the forefoot as well.

Does nobody else get sweaty feet in trainers?

Like i have no real objection to them. But for general wearing in the office for example a leather or canvas etnies choice feels alot more breathable.

And the Portuguese work boots also manage to actually ne waterproof to the tongue and weather proof above so. Without any nonsense goretex etc.

I've looked at Camper shoes so often - they're bordering on the right level of "different" and looking a bit speshul. I'll check Vinted for options. I'd spend the money if I was convinced.

Nipping to the pub. Converse / DC Converse-a-likes / black on black Adidas (Gazelles obviously)

Going for a meal with Mrs Noise. As above but maybe also black patent DMs

Suited and (literally) booted. Underground winklepicker Chelsea Boots. Or Ghillie Brogues if the kilt comes out.

Work is Blunnies, and day to day is very 'worn in' (worn out) Adidas walking boots.

But yeah, pretty much what the answer might have been when I was 18...

(although back then the DMs were flowery lace covered ones, the winklepickers were cheap suede ones from Camden, and the DCs were fat skate shoes).

I endorse this message.

Mostly because when the zombies or invasion happens those types who like their leather soled 'proper' shoes will make slow moving targets while those of us who prefer functional footwear make good our escape.

I admire your selflessness.

Teva if its hot.

Salamon XA Pro 3D for most of the year (worn to work too as I'm now of an age where I have more work and jobs offers than I can possibly deal with, am employed for my technical abilities not dress sense, my customers engage my services for my technical abilities not dress sense... and couldn't give a toss about anyone who thinks my attire is more important than my technical abilities).

Meindl brown leather 'philadelphia' goretex approach shoes if it's piishing down or muddy on the way to the pub. As they're waterproof.
