Picasa for viewing and dowloading piccies to PC
Photoshop (old version) or Paint shop pro for editing
Also got Paintshop photo album on disc. Prefer free software of course though might like to stay clear of "Google I want to take over the World" !!!

The gimp is pretty comprehensive and free, but some dont like it.
No idea about picasa - never tried it.
I like picasa (primarily for managing uploads to picasaweb).

Both cheapish at Amazon at the moment, both plenty powerful enough for everyday use.
