A fillet brazed pen pot from some offcuts. This is after a soak and a wire brush, can't decide if I should file/sand as per a frame and then get it painted or leave as is (maybe with a clearcoat)
[EDIT] Also did layed some brass on some bike tubing
Loving that restored lathe! Excellent piece of work....
Cable guides because I bought brakes with the hose too short to go the way the bike designers want it too. Also no more cable ties on the top tube doing a crap job of holding the dropper post remote cable. Will probably use a bit of old inner tube to avoid scratching frame.

Balance bike game getting moved on again?
Weighed it. 600 grams per side. 2mm wall thickness. Could take some ribbing out but for the application it hardly matters. Now I'm looking at the heckler thinking mmm, tapered headtube, slacker headangle and adjustable ride height...
That balance bike is very impressive!! 😀
Loving the wood effect 🙂

That light looks bloody amazing! Very 'raygun'/Gernsback Continuum/Deco styling. Looking forward to seeing the finished light.
Here's a little item I made last night, it's the second one, the first wasn't quite right, due to my original template being paper rather than 3mm card. Reference was a similar design I found on the 'net, but I wasn't going to pay £37! Only significant difference is no belt loop on the back.
Rather pleased with how it came out.
That balance bike puts mine to shame...I wish I had the CAD skills to draw stuff up like that. Can machine it but can't bloody draw it 🙁
Nice Zippo case CZ..just waiting for the electronics to arrive for the light.
Exactly the same problem I have. Might have to see about a CAD course...

I was setting up an small electronics bench for myself, almost bought [url=
]one of these horrible things, then remembered I loathe them and looked for something better.
The base had sawn edges, but came up really nicely once I got it on a linisher then a polishing wheel. The 12v fan does a really nice job of carrying solder fumes away from my face, and the power lead goes down the leg it's mounted on then out the back of the base.
While I had the facilities, after fiddling with designs and paper models to check the shape, I made myself some lampshades too:

Thanks stevied, it turned out better than I'd hoped, but it pales by comparison to your light! That's such a cool design, where did you get the extrusion for the case?

Is this all going to be built up for the day of Santa?
😉 🙂
That's the plan!
Those are seatposts aren't they. for fork legs?
I like that a lot.
Indeed. The boy doesn't weigh a lot so I'm fairly sure they will do.
awesome.
I'm sure they'll be fine. look great too. Soo looking forward to the finished product.

Brilliant Jamie, been great watching it come together.
that bike looks incredible!
I appreciate the use of the correct international standard reference biscuit for size.
Now I can't decide if I want to be Porter Jamie or his son
It's my nephew. My brother is doing most of the work. There's going to be a bit of short cutting going on to get it under the tree in time.
More weight lifting relates plywood creations, this time three toaster racks for my local Crossfit Gym (they have three platforms with decent coloured bumper plates)..

Most will be Christmas presents for family, all from green wood given to me or found locally. The spalted beech in the bowl front left is stunning - was given a much larger log but it started to crack so I made it and the lidded box to the right of it.

Very nice, Jamie
The whole balance bike is great but those wheels deserve a special mention, they really are tremendous.
Looks like the setting for series 4 of The Bridge.
I'm sure it will be fine when finished.
And CountZero is right. We can all stop what we're doing now.
Most of my posts have been metal but I'll balance it up with some woodwork, these are the coasters I made for my parents for Christmas. The mosaics are from Jordan (a gift to my parents from friends who went on the trip with us) and I've set them in hand turned mahogany bases

So the 'steerer' is a machined ally piece as per your usual 11/8 forks with a 44mm headset brg and the carbon tube goes inside that with a quill arrangement like a Bso has, to allow lots of height adjust. Seat post is the same carbon tube and the angle is such that the reach gets longer when his legs get longer.
That's brilliant!
What's the hole for lower down under the seat clamp?
I'm guessing optional footpegs for resting feet on when coasting downhill, and/or learning to stand whilst coasting? I thought about modding my son's wooden bike like that but he moved onto a pedal bike before I got round to it.
Yup. There's also holes under the 'chain stays' for canti mounts
That is gorgeous.
Well, I built a fatbike frame, and it's just been built up by Ross:

Built for 26x4.8 or 29x3.0 (which is what it's got at the moment), Rohloff with offset back end, and short 430mm chainstays. Relatively conventional compared to what I usually build, but there were some interesting challenges.
Arrow Cresting Machine in Lego 🙂
Some xmas pressies made from bits and pieces kicking about.
A Lego box for my daughter. (There is also some Lego to go with it, which she is well keen on).
Chopping board for mother. (Partly from a kitchen worktop that was getting chucked).
p.s. I love the balance bike, lovely work!
I like that Lego box...

Tempted to build another one of these for me...
Good luck allymcmurdo & missus; best wishes!
That said, the miracle of life is second place to that balance bike.

So, I tried my hand at a bit of sculpture. Practiced on plasticine, which after a couple of goes came out well.
So then tried some air-dry clay. What a horrible medium to work in! Doesn't smooth out like plasticine at all. Really hard to get a nice finish.
So here's my first one. Will paint black tomorrow and think of a way to mount on a plinth of some sort.
Not really happy with it. Anyone else do sculpted models? Will I find kiln dry easier? Or should I make a mould from the plasticine?

That balance bike is amazing. It's so amazing that it doesn't seem right that it has a normal saddle!
Not quite finished yet but..
Made the blade 14 years ago and its been lying in my parents loft until this Christmas where i spend some time getting handle made.

DezB, you know what, I rather like the rough quality of your dog sculpture, you've really captured the nature of the animal, and if it was really smooth I don't think it would work quite so well. I've seen lots of bronze sculptures in a similar style, and I like it.
Nicely done.
Thanks mate! It's painted black now and looks a lot better. WRrong paint though - rubs off as soon as it's touched. All a learning experience! 🙂
happy new year all. lots of nice stuff above - i wish i could do wood work stuff but i've never really done anything with it at all.
been emptying the cnc of swarf today and all the bins are completely full - i need to run down the scrap yard.
thanks for all the nice comments about the balance bike. lots of positive comments on facebook too - lots of people wanting to know how to buy one and how much. any ideas for marketing this kind of thing? thats not my thing at all.
any ideas for marketing this kind of thing? thats not my thing at all.
Sit down and work out a real cost for it, using 'real' figures for your time, machine time and materials. Then see what else you could buy for the money.
Edit: And maybe see how much you could save by getting someone else to make the parts. And don't forget things like CE approval.
Made a play table for our 15 month old daughter for christmas after attended a woodwork evening glass at Sutton Grammar School. One side of the top in blue the other green so she can choose between sea and grass.

I tried to work out how much I would be able to make a batch of the balance bike I made and in the end it would've been a very expensive purchase price + lots of faff getting it approved etc.
Ended up happy in the knowledge that there is only one of them in the world.
What price for uniqueness?
Looks superb J, great job.
i've thought of a number and then added the usual buggeration factor and i've got to a very large number which is probably what the van is worth....
I've got to a very large number
But see the expensive watch thread!
Whatever the cost, there may be a market. But maybe rather small.
That's a little cracker there Mowgli.
Have you seen my Centec group on Yahoo?
Lots of info to be had.

Nice wee mill.
What Rpm will it do,and what are those T-slots in the side for?

Nice wee mill.

They're an alternative motor mounting position for when the machine is bench mounted instead of on a stand.
Can't remember what RPM they're good for offhand but they do have a decent speed range for a mill of their time.
Is that the vertical head that was on fleabay a few weeks ago?
I like the riser block too. Never had one but they must make a big difference to the usefulness of the VH.
Wish I hadn't sold mine now 🙁
Scruff - no, bought this one privately a few months back. I have a frequency converter for it, so should be able to get a decent speed range. I have used the Yahoo group for a few things- are you the mod for it?
Yes, group owner. Keep meaning to ask other group members to moderate as I no longer have a Centec but never got round to it.
Just finished this colonial style town house.
