Planning ahead ...I want to take my son to the new starwars film in Dec .....and I've never been to a imax....is it worth it

I'm thinking of seeing it in 3D ......so is the IMAX in 3D even more worth it??

yes, it is worth it, the screen is enormous, it takes up your entire vision and the cinema will have full proper surround sound. It will be mint.

Ignore all other cinemas that claim to be 3D, IMAX is just that much better!

I'm booked in at the BFI one - can't wait. Also seeing Spectre there next Friday.

The BFI one gets booked up fast...

My dad took me to see Star Ward Ep4 back when I was 7, at the long gone cinema in Yeadon. So, I've booked us both tickets to go see the next one at the IMAX in Bradford.

Think the ticket prices have changed a bit since 1977 - 30 odd quid for two of us!!

I'm not that big a 3D fan but IMAX 2D done right is fantastic. I couldn't say better colour, or sound, or picture, it just felt more immersive. Basically if there's a 2D imax version of a film I'll always go and see that now.

Some Imax screens are bigger than others - the one at 5 Ways in Birmingham seemed a lot smaller than the one down Millenium Point.

I Max is great. I'm choosy about the films I choose to watch on it, but it really does enhance the experience. The best ones are the ones actually filmed with imax kit rather than converted to imax format - the latter is just watching a film on a bigger screen rather than the full imax experience which is all about improved quality at the larger screen size as well as enhanced sound. It makes all the difference. So do a bit of research first to establish if the film you're looking to watch was filmed with the proper imax cameras.

Take three cinema screens. Turn them through 90 degrees and stick them side-by-side. Presto, IMAX.

IMAX is bloody awesome.

Was going to book my tickets for the 18th but other plans have come up instead.

Went to see Spectre at Bradford IMAX.

It wins where the cinema photography is good and the vista big.

The sound at the Bradford IMAX was incredible. Beautiful clarity for the music, the surround sound beat any other cinema hands down, and their sub woofer was just something else making the seating shake.

I think Bradford as been recently refurbed so may have more up to date sound than other IMAX.

The only down side IMO is that action can make your brain/eyes hurt as you are taking in so much info.

Oh you can take a beer in too 🙂

I've just been to see Spectre on the IMAX in Basildon*. Sound was awesome, picture was, well it was a bit shit really. Motion was blurry and distracting. Doesn't help that I left it a bit lat booking and we were in row D 🙁

It was also off-putting that you could actually see the pixels as such. I'm sure If we were a lot further back it would be better, but it was bloody annoying from row D. Especially with the trendy 'wobbly' camera work for some scenes.

Anyway, the film itself was pretty good, but not as good as Skyfall. Kept thinking of STW during the opening credits, must have been the tentacles!

*Look, it's the closest to home, wouldn't normally venture into Bas Vegas

Not all IMAX is the same, the one at the Trafford Center is pathetic it's 17.94 x 9.58m = 172m2

The one in Manchester Printworks is 26.3 x 18.8m = 495m2, the difference is night and day

Find a 'proper' imax.
Went to see Interstellar at the Trafford Centre 'IMAX'. I enjoyed the film but it wasn't an IMAX 'experience' for me.

This summer we trekked into town to the Printworks to see Mad Max and Jurassic Park. Massive screen, and cheaper than the Trafford Centre too. Try to get seats in the middle and a good way back. I would pay extra for the premier seats rather than sit near the front/out on the edge.

IMAX is great but as said above, the screen us so huge if you are near the front and the end of a row its hard to enjoy the bits of the screen so far away

Pretty crap of them to have seats that are so poorly situated, considering the cost of tickets!

Get a decent seat and iris great though

They're probably both IMAX Digital - the 'proper' IMAX in London is at the BFI I believe.

IMAX can vary massively.

My first time seeing IMAX was with one of the Matrix sequels on an 8 storey tall screen. It didn't matter that the film was bobbins, it was aesthetically amazing and even sitting in the middle halfway back, I had to turn my head to follow the action in some shots.

The second time was the grand unveiling of the first IMAX screen in Nottingham, which turned out to only be as wide as the other was tall. They'd hyped it to **** and I actually laughed out loud as I walked in. It was only a tad bigger than one of the regular screens in the same cinema.
