Budget is up to £1000.

Should we stick with new or look for something on ebay/local free-ads?

Any 'good' brands to keep an eye out for.

I got a Reebok tredmill off ebay for £300 (RRP £1500) it's a Reebok PremierRun Treadmill TR3. Excellent machine, gym size, so needs nothing short of three blokes, two to lift and one in reserve when it gets awkward through door frames and such.

It takes over the house though so after the London marathon it's going back on ebay...

New yes but on Ebay they often go for around £500 ish IIRC. They are top kit and you can train at quite high speeds as some of them go sub 5 min mile plus the more expensive ones have an incline.

There seem lots of bargains the problem is always collecting them and storing them as they dont fold.

I'll keep an eye on ebay, thanks - as you say transport is an issue.

I think we have space to keep the machine once we've got it but moving a 300lb running machine through the house may be 'entertaining'.

Mate of mine has hired a treadmill for a few months over winter, costs him £15 a month I believe and is a gym quality one.

Just bought one of these, hardly used off fleabay - rrp £350.

I know it's not what the OP is after by any stretch, but it's compact enough for our spare room and at £87 can be chucked if it breaks...

We've had a Nordic Trak C2000 for a year and a bit and it's been excellent. It's similar in size to a gym machine, has a pretty powerful motor and can also automatically adjust the incline during the workout. It takes iFit cards so you can get loads of training programmes for it and costs about £600 or so.

I order ours from www.sweatband.com and they delivered quickly.

Try the pavement. It's free and everywhere.

Try finding a pavement where I live currently - you'd have to dig under a foot and a half of snow.

wot epicsteve said - also, for a woman running alone at night it doesn't always feel that safe.

Got one of these - and can't fault it.... really good quality.... 'almost' gym quality!

Brilliant advice and service from Connection Fitness too!

Already been looking at Nordic Track, so thanks for the recommendations - there's a place nearish us that stocks them so will go and have a look.

A lot of gyms get all new equipment in for January... see if anyone is selling in your area?

Any cheap one won't handle proper exercise.

Seems to be a few people who know about treadmills so I'll ask a slightly OT question.

Are there any treadmills with a long enough bed(?) to fit a bike on. Need it long enough to get the back wheel on as well.

(I have some bike geometry experiments I'd like to try)

I'd be very surprised if any home ones did. Our treadmill is pretty big and I don't think it'd be remotely close to being long enough to get a bike on.

I normally put a bike on ours when not in use - and it fits - but it is tight!

Well worth looking at Gym Liquidation on Google. Also Virgin Active have just removed about 10 treadmills from my gym because the manufacturer was going under or somesuch can't remember the make though.

I need a reasonably flat rolling bed for the wheels, but it does not to be particularly high speed. I was also looking at short conveyor belts, but treadmills usually have additional features (controls, LCD panels or speedometers) useful for my purpose.

Mine's for the self concious mrs TAFKASTR, who likes to exercise indoors - personally I wouldn't dream of running, be it indoors, or out.
