Assuming it is the classic design of a bit or chord/fabric/wick in a resevoir at one end and into a glass/wire cage at the other (all controlled by a spindle thingy), then paraffin.

Suspect that with meths that you may be due a little explosion as the volatile vapours reach the top of the wick.

Was horrified a few years back when I resurrected some for camping use and realised how cr&p they were. Give 'em away to your olde pub selling food fayre. They can hang them on the dado rails!

Storm lantern = Tilley lamp, right ? The pressurised type with the mantle and pump, not the type with a wick ?
If so, paraffin. Meths is just for preheating the burner with the little scissors sort of thing.

I was on a scout trip when a meths accident led to a kid in my class getting very painfully burned - some kid was pouring a bottle of meths into a warming ring that was already hot; meths in the bottle lit; kid flicked flaming bottle of meths away from him in shock - all over face/head/chest of the kid next to him. Nightmare.
