Coca-cola is possibly one of the most well known drinks in the world, but can anyone describe its flavour? Although now many varients exist the base flavour is very similar but very difficult to describe. So, what flavour is it ?

cola flavour!
Actually there is a resonably interesting episode of "this American Life" which investigates the secret Coke recipe
Caramel
I work in the flavour and fragrance industry and can tell you that it's actually a lime flavour, which is the most refreshing flavour anyway. The addition of sugar and caramel fools you into thinking otherwise though.
Little known fact: the flavours for both Coke and Pepsi are supplied by the same company in the USA, which has a UK office in Chester.
Another little known fact: Coke and Pepsi have decided to give up the battle and join together. The first campaign will have the slogan: "Be Sociable - Have a Poke!"
(Okay, I admit I made that bit up.)
...and get CoSi?"Be Sociable - Have a Poke!"

Lime? right-o.
what did they extract from cola nuts for the flavour? surely it's that. maybe sugar and vanilla and some weird watered down spices?
virgin cola (does it still exist) was much more vegetabley than coke pepsi - whilst still being definately a cola flavour.
They still use coca leaves as flavouring, but the drink doesn't taste anything like them.
