Ain't gonna happen.

Compromise on some and go with a Focus. Our 06 one has been great.

That's what I also have (well an 09 one so not
In the budget I guess) but it doesn't meet all the unrealistic criteria.

It's not going to happen for all the criteria. Maybe a late old shape Leon FR diesel, but not a new shape one.

Otherwise a Focus - but they aren't quick.

You might get an '05/'06 or so Mk 5 Golf TDI 140. Quick look there, '06 plate with 40,000 miles for £5,999.

What's wrong with the Cmax? My perception of modern Fords is that they are very good, probably why I have two, a Galaxy and a Ka.

Not very popular in here but you'd get a decent Astra 1.9CDTi 150bh for that money. Pretty rapid (0-600bhp in 8.3s), handles well, cheapish to run, etc. Focus is good but the top diesel isn't very pokey.

a newer cmax ? we have an 08 petrol one. poor economy, but otherwise ticks the boxes reasonably well, and the newer ones are uber reliable

You could get a STW favourite for that money...Octavia 1.8T RS. Ok, not the diesel, but something on a 55 plate with less than 50k miles.

in the last 3 months we have had no end of problems with the cmax

so far its had....

new egr valve
new turbo pipe
new intake temp sensor
manual regen on the dpf
reconditioned alternator

all the above has cost me just shy of a grand and its still playing up, somthing wrong with the injectors now??

it was quite reliable for a while but seems to have gone wrong in a big way.

you start questioning if its worth spending all the money on it!

I know some of the criteria is unrealistic but i wanted to keep the wife happy!!

it needs to be a diesel as im doing 240000 miles a year.

oh when i say quick i mean my cmax with 136bhp was quick enough!

i really like the 05 onwards vectra but the wife is having none of it.

mondeo might be worth a look i think.

cheers

steve

Get an older (than 2005) s-class or 7 series and buy a private plate (to disguise it's age to your wife) she won't care of it's age once she's been chaufered around. It's not good advice and would prove costly long term but that's what I would do. Maybe.

We had a C Max as it fitted the bill, quick'ish, spacious, very economical and low tax. It was my 1st Ford. I thought Ford seemed pretty well built nowadays, camchain engine looked nice and reliable.
Shame the electrics are sh*te! Like you we had alternator go, and we also had the electrics go completely mad! Turned out to be water in teh fuse box, common fault - £600 or so. I was never confident in the cars elecs after that and the odd engine light came on dash.

We sold it in Jan and went back to Honda. Yuo cant beat Jap reliability. Its my 4th Honda and its been faultless. Granted its not a diesel, couldnt afford it and its not very good on fuel. But we dont get breakdowns and big bills out of the blue. Honda FR-V (2.0). Loads of space (6seats), too much really, but you dnot get a lot of choice with Honda's. I would really like the 2.2 diesel accord estate, but costs lots.

Personally, you can't go wrong with either a Fabia or Octavia VRS from Skoda. Forget the badge, German engineering, cheaper than Golfs and fly like the wind. Either of these two cars tick all your boxes and some. IMO 😀
