Is there anything decent under £50?
Don't need smart features, and do all upscale well. Or is upscaling a bit of a myth?

We bought a Toshiba for about that. Has other stuff online if you add a dongle (we didn't).
No idea what the quality is *really* like, but it plays DVDs and they look nice.
Major bugbear with it is startup time and responding to actions, like ejecting a DVD; it's a little slow on the uptake.
