As I sit her watching the original Batman film, I count 8 batman films. That's not a bad run. I wonder what character has had the most films made about him or her?

I mean actual starring roles. There are some characters that've cropped up in hundreds of films in different interpretations.

EDIT just realised - James Bond must surely be the most?

Mickey mouse wasn't playing himself in many of those movies. He was the actor rather than the character.

Were Laurel and Hardy characters or actors?

Most portrayed character is Dracula, apparently. Makes sense. Although the article says film AND tv.

According to IMDb there's been 34 Emmanuelle films, probably hard to beat for a named character in the film title

Nope, its probably Hamlet

Over 50 cinema version of Hamlet have been made since 1900.

What do I win?

Pretty sure it'll be a 'specialist' actress under her own name. If that counts.

Steve Stifler. Not always called Steve Stifler but always the same character.

If we're doing that, then surely it's Tommy Lee Jones, as the gruff, ageing law enforcer.

See:

- Men in Black
- MiB 2-548
- No Country for Old Men
- Double Jeopardy

etc etc!

Actually, I reckon they've got it wrong. I'm going to stick my neck out and say Santa Claus.

I don't just mean appearances, I mean a film ABOUT the character. So whilst Santa is in a lot of films, there aren't many actually about him.

Miracle on 34th St
The Santa Clause
Bad Santa
Santa Claus is coming to town

And I mean cinema films, not TV.

If it's a single character, in films with different (albeit similar) stories, James Bond?

In which case Dracula wins again but there's a bloody damned sight more than four films in which santa's a major part of the plot.

I'd like to vote best supporting role for Wilhelm:

I know you said leading/starring roles only; but, meh, the answer to that one is already established...

I mean a film ABOUT the character

Then Sherlock Holmes wouldn't get it because he's in the films etc. & they're not about him?

How about Wong Fei-hung? An actual person portrayed in loads of Chinese films & TV progs?

Guessed Sherlock Holmes - but I do know which actor was in more episodes of Star Trek than anyone else (sadly).

A warrior does not bother to work out the answer to this trifling question

Need to define the question is the film about the character eg Batman a Bond film etc or are they just in it eg Laurel and hardy, Holmes, etc

What about death/ grim reaper?

A generic Zombie?

Lassie but we have to include tv for that one [ just googled and apparently radio]

There are fair few "actors" that play the same part in whatever movie they're in.

Keanu Reeves, Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, Bruce Willis, Jason Stratham, etc.

Sherlock Holmes must be up there for film and TV appearances.

Yeah they are. He's the star, he solves the cases.

It's got to be the Tora San movies 48 movies with the same actor playing the same character. Only stopped making them when the actor died - see here

Forgive my ignorance on such matters but were there really 8 Ironman films in 4 years? Or is that a typo?

bobgarrod's post aside I feel we may be being a tad UK/American centric.Surely there must be a contender from Bollywood ,China/HongKong,Nigeria,Soviet Russia etc etc and I suspect there are a fair few films about one of the glorious leaders from North Korea?

Given the explanation of a 'sequel' used it probably includes the Avengers films in that lot.

Surely sherlock holmes has to share any record with watson?

Infact assuming the films are loosely based on the books are most of them not about watson and his escapades with holmes?

Mickey mouse wasn't playing himself in many of those movies. He was the actor rather than the character.

and lost my grip on reality
