You'll do well to get a fun 4 seat convertible. The hole in the top's just too bloody big to make a light and rigid bodyshell practical.

Think they may be right about a BMW though. Or maybe you'd like a classic?

Don't know if they come in a four-door but they're roomy in the back.

AWESOME cars, took one for a play around here and it didn't miss a beat.

OK - AWESOME cars in Moab or the Rub al-Khali, AWFUL cars for Cholmondley Wells High St and the Waitrose supermarket (crap fuel consumption, unstable, noisy). OP can guess where his wife is going to spend most of her time and choose appropriately.

Apparently we have to guess too, based on the limited info in the question... 😆

porsche 968 fits the bill, or m3 (as above),

For me it would be a Maserati GranSport Cabrio - approx £100k.

Obviously I can't even afford a 15 yr old Golf cabrio but it;s nice to dream.......

Mk1 Golf Convertible (Which they made up to 1992 oddly enough) is about the only fun affordable 4 seat convertible I can think of...

4 seat convertibles really are just for people who want to pose on the whole, but need to be able to take the kids places too on occasion. I'd much rather a small fun coupe or hot hatch myself but hey, it's your money...

My wife got me this last year for my birthday (she was feeling guilty having spent the Elise fund on holidays)
'86 Golf 1.8 GTi. Great fun!
Generally in good condition but needs a bit of a tune up. It's great to pose in 😉 😀

306 cab's almost define scuttle shake! Not to be recommended.

Saab 900/9-5 - there will be one out there to suit your budget somewhere. Or a post '02-03 CLK. Again huge variation in price.

Lots of CC too - focus/peugoet 308/EOS/megane etc...

Also remeber wait a while til the "summer" is gone and you could save a packet on a convertible

Christ Don Simon, have you actually driven one of those things on the road? They feel like you are going over those rock slabs whilst going down the M6. Worst 2 hros of my life being taken to casualty in one about 4 weeks back with a dislocation broken shouder blade.
And if any other proof were needed, google 'Queer As Folk'

If you want something fun, the M3 is impossible to beat (on a realistic budget) S4 / RS4 would be good (particually the latter!) or are we talking Focus / Golf / Megan type thing in which case, hang your head in shame 😉

I've just bought a very shoddy Saab 900 with a massive turbo. It's awful to drive fast, clunky, wobbly, shaky and vague but the moment the roof comes down it doesn't matter. Convertibles are ace.

Second thoughts, how about a Celica? Been sat in car showrooms today musing while negotiating on a S-Max and bemoaning the lack of six and seven seater convertibles.

Yes I have driven one on the road and I have to say that as a 4X4 it deals with the roads quite well, better than, let's say, a Ford Focus would deal with the terrain in my second photo. It's an off-road vehicle designed to be effective off-road and that is what it does effectively, if you want a motorway cruiser, buy a big motorway cruiser but don't come running to me with tears when your motorway cruiser gets stuck in a muddy field because that's not what it was designed for. 🙄

OK, fair enough it's not a road car but it's not as good offroad as say a LR Defender and it's a lot, lot worse on road. PLus the 4.0l petrol engine is astonishing thirsty yet develops sod all power and the deisels are shocking in all respects. It's not a good car - although I'll admit that they could be fun in a masochistic kind of way.
Anyway, back on topic - does that Celica come in the 200hp 4wd version? If so, that'd be good fun. Still LOVE an M3 though - I wonder if Mrs Transapp would swap her oh so pratical TT (yes the one I have to drive because the baby kit only fits in my estate....) for one

But take it in the spirit of the thread, I think it answers the OP's question perfectly. I looked at buying one in Spain which could have been fun, but then again I did have a Lada Niva as my everyday car for two years...

Now, I wonder...?

4 seats.
Convertible.
Fun.

A Jeep and a Niva? You, sir, are a masochist.

Surely it's not fun to drive fast in a convertible cos it's too blowy? I see loads of people driving around on nice days in convertibles with the roof up - you have to wonder why....

Love our Saab Convertible Aero, took it up to Scotland with three dogs, two adults and a child and three bikes on detachable tow bar. Not the vauxhall as many people claim they are and coming up to three years old now and not a problem at all.

I have a VW Eos, which isn't a bad drive. Heavy cars mind - all that strengthening. The folding roof is a thing of amazement (well it is in the playground, anyway 😆 ). If looking used, I'd probably veer towards the Saab instead as there is so much less to go wrong.

Surely it's not fun to drive fast in a convertible cos it's too blowy? I see loads of people driving around on nice days in convertibles with the roof up - you have to wonder why

You'd be surprised. In the front, I have no issues at speed. In the back, it's dreadful! And it can be too hot to put the roof down on sunny days - that's why they sell so poorly in Spain.

The best day for a convertible, is a nice crisp winter's day, blue sky, heated seats and warm air blowing on the legs. Wouldn't catch me in the back though!

EDIT: As for rear leg room, when we bought ours, the Eos had the longest knee room when front seat was adjusted. this from Saab, A4, BMW, Mercedes. The A5 may have changed this order...
