Budget is £8K max. Must be capable caravan tower and bike carrier. What would you buy and why?

Currently driving an old knackered BMW 320d estate. Would love a newer one but only high mileage ones within budget - same goes for other German estates.

Should I accept a high mileage or look at cheaper brands?

Citroen c5 v6 estate or just a 2ltr diesel, comfy quiet well equipped. I had one for towing and bike duties for 4 yrs loved it. Pug 508 same platform but newer. Mondeos worth a look aswell at that budget. Skoda superb for about the biggest car ever might be in that budget aswell.

My 7yr old A6 2.7TDI Avant Quattro with 110,000 on the clock went for about that, brilliant car all round, decent towing potential. Not the biggest estate as a load carrier but two bikes in front wheel off with some padding between. Very comfortable for 4 adults. Felt as good as new and was sorry to see it go.

bought a nice vw golf sport line estate 140 bhp diesel (like the current gtd estate) a couple of yrs ago with 65K miles. cost about £8K and was ex fleet at 3 yrs old.

good service history, tidy inside and out, been a good mile eater with good mpg - wife can get 75mpg out of the on board computer.

not huge in the back but has roof rails and a pretty big boot.

nicer looking, more subtly styled car than equivalent Skoda diesel yrs (in my opinion) and cheaper than same sporty btw or Audi in range.

prob can't go wrong with an octavia though...

Considering a Mitsubishi L200 - terrible idea?

For towing you need a decent amount of torque/low end grunt which typically means a large capacity V8.
M5s are a bit pricey so how about a 4.2l supercharged V8 Jag? 😀

Yes.

If it were me I'd go for a Mondeo or Superb estate.

It might be me, the woman and the boy have a hankering for one of those things you drag along behind the car. I hate the idea.

Hmmm, doesn't appear to be available with a 400Hp V8, best play it safe and get the Jag.

You should easily be able to buy a newer 3 series with reasonable miles, just look at models with bigger engines. There are plenty of bargain 325i, 325D and 330D's around.

A relative recently bought a very good condition Merc C320 estate (85k Miles) for £6k, it still returns around 35mpg so the big engine penalty is minimal.

Having been around a similar loop twice recently so much of this comes down to your own choice and circumstances.

I went towards a 3 1/2 year old Ford Focus (£7,000) with 40,000 on the clock, good low end grunt, good trim level and boring white (as opposed to any gross colours) as it was easy to get serviced, get parts and when all else fails it's a Ford.

Have previously had many Skoda cars, all good but instant parts availability not so good.

Best wishes,

James

But you'd always regret not buying the Aston. Tweak the budget. Get the Aston.

Another 320d.

Does it have to be an estate though? I just got rid of a 320 ED saloon (ED can't tow though so avoid) for £8400 boot was surprisingly capacious, even managed a few tip runs getting rid of soil when I dug out a new path in the front garden.

My Volvo might be a consideration but I am literally heading up to Coventry on Saturday to part-ex it. I'd still sell it privately before then.

I'm going with a Skoda Superb Estate, which by all accounts is a brilliant car and a very sensible buy (though the 3.6L V6 engine and four wheel drive might be a bit bonkers).

Default answers are big estate car with torquey diesel engine, e.g. Mondeo, Superb
Have you looked at Tow Car of the Year awards from previous years?

Love my 10 plate Mondeo Titanium X Estate which I've had for 3 years. It goes well, doing 49+ mpg mainly local, had a 3 seat sofa in the back..etc etc etc.

(it's even got heated AND cooled seats)

[img] [/img]

Having said that, my 1st Passat which was a 51 plate had 235K on when I traded it for another Passat (which was shoite)

I've never known a Jag owner that hasn't had a multitude of problems (whilst simultaneously telling me how awesome it is).

Mazda 6?
Good to drive and reliable.

One out of two, at any rate.

If you can find a reasonably high spec one, then sitting inside it will cure that. Either that or the comfortable sense of smugness that you made the incredibly intelligent choice and shunned badge ****ery.

I'm coming round to that way of thinking, although now concerned about the VAG diesel fix issue.

What weight do you need the car to tow?

Caravans can be bloody heavy, ours is about average length (5m internal, 7m overall) with max 1400kg - empty is 1200 or so. Using the 85% unofficial rule, we need a towcar at least 1650kg. Golf-sized doesn't cut it for an average caravan.

Should say we tow with a Freelander 2. Bikes on roof. Barely notice the caravan. Loads of known faults though so not recommended!

The caravan is 1090 kg in running order, 1325 kg max. Have looked at Volvos but not found anything within our criteria/budget. The wife has imposed a 2012 age-limit and 75,000 mile mileage-limit.

Just got a 2013 mondeo titanium x 163bhp diesel with 18k miles for 9300. Ford direct used. They are cheap as. The dealer said he couldn't shift them as people either want BMW/Audi or an MPV.

Oh well, bargain for me.

The wife has imposed a 2012 age-limit and 75,000 mile mileage-limit.

In which case you're going to be limited to:

Ford Mondeo/Focus
Vaxhaul Insignia/Astra
Skoda Octavia

If you are willing to go for petrol rather than diesel you've got a few more options. And if you're willing to go back to 2010 rather than limit it to 2012, that opens up other options as well.

Have a look at the Volvo V70 2.5T SE Lux (this is the car I'm about to part-ex). There are several on Auto Trader (all a bit unrealistically priced IMO). You can get between an 08 and 10 model, all with sub 90k. They are fabulous cars really; very comfy, reliable (mostly) but they are costly to ru. MPG is 32 realistically but the engines are super strong and you'll happily tow your box.

I'd accept £5k cash for mine no problem. The ones listed on AutoTrader are around the £8k but that's just chancing their arm. You'll get one for £6k easily.

Chap next door to me has a BMW 318 that is showing disturbing signs of poor maintenance, i.e. metal in the oil, so he looked around for a replacement and found a 13-plate Freelander being sold by a woman down in Newton Abbott.
I had a look at it yesterday, and it's a really tidy car, 200,000 on the clock, but that was her driving to her parents in Norfolk every weekend, and she actually cried when he drove it away, and made him promise to get in touch if he decided to sell it. The paint is a bit scratched down the sides from driving along narrow Devon lanes with overhanging hedges, but the interior is hardly worn, and the engine bay is spotless! I've never seen such a clean engine on anything other than a brand new car or show car.
He paid £650 for it! He's off camping in the Beacons this weekend in it, lucky git.
