Monksie - thanks for the message. Glad to see you got home safely. nbt and myself rode back from New Mills on Strines road, it was bliss without drivers.

We went to visit BWD. The rather nice constable sitting at the bottom of his round had certainly had plenty of tea, also too many cakes by the sounds of it, but had he tasted the delights of the local sweetie factory? He seemed to be concerned about where to empty his tea filled bladder. You see mighty huge problems such as a dam bursting can bring along tiny little problems such as a constables bladder bursting and I don't mean a camelbac.

Yes I know the sweetie factory is above the Goyt, however it is just a foot or two under the canal and I believe if this dam bursts, the canal will get a large splosh of water causing a large wave or two.

I've been doing an anti rain dance.

I assume it's Marple Bridge and houses near Strines that have been warned, rather than Marple.

Still no rain, which is a good thing, but it's rather humid with lots of cloud.

Yes Marple Bridge, Strines and parts of Marple lower down from the canal and on the edge of the canal.
However the police have been giving out leaflets and knocking on doors in very minor event of some of marple having to evacuate.
We chatted to the police last night and they were very friendly while enjoying large amounts of curry.

I reckon he's put on at least 20 kg today and is now physically incapable of leaving his car. He was eating an ice-pop when we passed him earlier. We could take him some Parma Violets later.

The UK-spec Chinooks have had a fair bit of electrical equipment in the underfloor spaces for a whole now, especially so since the HC2/2A variants were upgraded to HC4/5/6 and eventually 6A.

It was infact the 2 Iirc.

Also something about having to use compost bags to build a dam across the back of the cockpit!

Probably a point of contention, but........

If the dam was built to keep the canal topped up rather than as water supply, is it worth fixing? Assuming that any fixing is going to be expensive then why not just decommission it? Then either accept that the canal will dry up in summer, or pump water back up the locks.

It's a working canal - Marple Lock Flight is a tourist attraction in itself, there's are marinas at Buxworth, Furness Vale, New Mills and Marple plus the canal hooks into Peak Forest Canal and runs right into Manchester. You'd kill the entire thing. Wildlife, businesses, people's homes.

It'd be cheaper and easier to repair the dam than try and decommission the entire canal!

We should be restoring and maintaining canals not closing as a dam had an issue.

Ducks you mean? No worries though, we could have a conceptual 'Garden Canal' and get it sponsored by multinational companies and send colossal amounts of public money on it before cancelling the thing. I know a PM who might be interested.

Risk Vs benefit.

On the one hand, the presumably large cost of restoring the dam and/or bringing it up to modern standards as appropriate and probably taking years anyway so the canal is going to have to survive without it for the short term. And still with residual risk of watery death.

Vs

Decommissioning the reservoir and feeding the canal from somewhere not available to the victorians (i.e. pump water back up the locks).

TINAS – bit of a bummer for those that live on the canal….

Look on the bright side, the canal and river trust wouldn't have to enforce continuous cruising anymore.

The Chinook was flying again most of this morning; it's brought in another 100 tonnes of so of aggregate.

Reported slippage of some bags, but its looking hopeful locals can go back soon. There has been social media calls for folk to visit Whaley and spend some money there to get business back up once safe - one of the ride groups I know could be planning a trip.

It's going to be one big repair job.

If you do go to Whaley to spend money, you could do worse than spend it in The Goyt, and say hello to Chaos the pub dog while you're there.

And the sausage rolls from the Bakehouse are a-mazing.

I've found everything from the bakehouse a-mazing. Currently top favourite cake is the Large egg custard

Given that the 'town' centre is a single road, not really 🙂

I'd imagine the locals want to get back to some semblance of normality wth open roads, not have the whole lot closed down again!

Water level down to the target level now

Do keep up Jules, that's the link I posted half an hour ago! 😉

By 4pm yesterday afternoon there was 720 1 tonne bags of ballast by air and 250 tonnes of grout in the hole and the Chinook was back there today dropping more. That was some hole!!

Yes and the pear tree cafe.

Now called 'Little Fika' - apparently it's Swedish for coffee - and gently Scandi, but not in noir sort of way. Only been there once since it changed owner, but it seems pleasant.

Cake Nest just down the road in Furness is owned by a cyclist (road/MTBer) and he lives in Whaley. Mail order cakes...

PS that hole was massive - you only realised the scale when the 1 tonne bags went in.

Finally better late than never, a local councillor has managed to prevent parking through Marple Bridge. The parking though the village and just up the hill has caused tailbacks to Hazel Grove and beyond.
I've not seen such inconsiderate, selfish driving from Motorists trying to get from Marple Bridge to New Mills and back for a long time. They are not used to driving on very narrow windy country lanes. They block up roads, don't give way and have no concept of the highway code.
And breath.

Well done to most people though, who have realised they're in a certain situation and patiently got on with it.

It's more than that though, not just coffee but delicious cakes, biscuits and socialising with co-workers and friends. If they do a good cinnamon bun, go there and enjoy. If they have just about anything made from 'Sju sorters kakor' the same applies; it's a book filled with awesome recipes.

Just the standard entitled nature of motorists in general. Every one of the police, volunteers and Traffic Management people I've spoken to while walking or cycling around the area has stories of irate motorists who demand to be let through because *their* journey is essential.

People have been moving Road Closed signs, driving through (or just driving round them in the pavement), finding out that, astonishingly, the road is actually closed and then doing an angry 7-point turn and roaring off the way they've come, driving on the pavement around the Closed signs again.

Morons.

Fans of The Bridge will remember the scene where Saga drops in on the office "fika" and starts talking about her menstruation ... 🙂

If it's anything like Nordic Cafe (chain) in London, don't touch with a barge pole 🙁

Dammit. I feel spoiled then. Even average petrol station kanelbullar are decent and, when I go to a local bakery, they can be amazing.

Mmmmm. buuuuns.

I can sort of see why, our road was 'Closed' for six weeks earlier this year. By 'closed' I mean the council put up closed signs at both ends and other than that it was pretty much open as normal bar some minor roadworks which didn't impact traffic at all. Everyone could get in and out without any bother. Certainly when I see Road Closed signs I do think, is it really?

Crazy-legs - Agree. Cycling around has been a joy.
At the road block from the A6 police there were laughing at us on our mtb tandem, joking they could only let one of us through.

Will try the new cafe.

Marple Bridge....

I've totally missed what's going on in Marple Bridge/New Mills, what's going on there?

Jon Taylor - Because of all the road blocks (Strines Rd Marple, A6 Furness Vale, all roads in to Whaley, most main routes into New Mills) the only way into New Mills is via Mellor Road from Marple Bridge, along past the Pack Horse pub and into the back end of New Mills.
Closure due to Threat of Dam burst in Whaley Bridge.

Ah thanks, I hadn't realised Whaley Bridge was just down there (not my neck of the woods and they haven't been there long). As they're in that area it's no doubt affecting them!

On the news now that residents can start returning to their homes but road restrictions will remain until the end of the week to assist with the traffic as people drive home.

Police presence there for 7 more days to help with it all too.

My village has had a lot of quite big lorries trying to get through it as the road from Hadden Hill is closed. In the past they been marked as closed but you could often get through (I always could, but I'm on a bike.) Not this time though as the guys building some new homes smashed up a gas main.
A lot of cars doing the ignore it thing and then 15 minutes later come back up the road with red faces. Bless.

It didn't really blow my socks off tbh, but I've only been the once and I was quite fond of the previous incarnation. A mate of mine used to reserve the sofa for business meetings.
