For the last 6 months I have increased my exercise (taken advice from two fitness instructors) and stuck to a strict diet with the aim of losing weight. Whilst I have lost some weight on most parts of my body the excess around my waist is not budging. Some friends have suggested a supplement to assist, suggestions so far include CLA, L-Carnitine, Thermopure tablets, Green Tea Extract etc. Anyone used these, and if so, what one would you recommend?

i sorry to tell you, you cant 'spot reduce' fat. and again, sorry to tell you your waist will be the last to go 🙂

if you are already losing weight, youre doing the right thing, but youll need to just carry on doing what youre doing. i believe around 2 lbs a week is the ideal amount to be losing to be sustainable.

i wouldnt know about those supplements, but green tea is sposed to be good to take anyway. for your weight loss tho, just keep eating in a calorie deficit as you are already doing.

just out of interest, how much you trying to lose, how much you lost already, and over what time frame?

cheers

Hi, personally I wouldn't bother beyond drinking green tea (if you like it).

It sounds like you're already losing fat and a supplement will not specifically target your abdominal fat.
If your weight loss has plateaued then you need to consider changing your routine. Have you considered exercising in a carb' depleted state, i.e. first thing in the morning before breakfast? Some studies have proven this to be an effective way of increasing the amount of fat you may burn.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There is no 'magic bullet', despite what the tabloids and the people who sell this stuff would have you believe.

To back this up...

I used to eat breakfast then cycle to work. Then, since last Jan I cycled to work first, then had breakfast.

Over a few months until April/May time, I gradually became the slimmest/leanest that I've ever been.

I did not change my diet or the amount of exercise I did.

All I did was exercise before breakfast.

This is what I'm doing and from the comprehensive study of one person it seems to be working. Two mornings a week I do about three-quarters of an hour hardish riding straight out of bed and then don't eat until lunchtime.

Diet pills = quackery and snake oil.

What's the 'strict diet'?

Via Wikipedia,

CLA: "a meta-analysis conducted in 2007 concluded CLA has a small impact on fat mass"

L-carnitine: "Although L-carnitine has been marketed as a weight-loss supplement, there is no scientific evidence to show that it improves weight loss"

Thermopure: not on Wikipedia, but is ostensibly green tea extract, both of which fall under Polyphenols: "The subject of the relationship between natural phenols content and health is still controversial as claims are difficult to prove scientifically. In particular in humans, tests need to be validated"

Summary: CLA may be of minor benefit, the rest is unproven.

Cougar - my understanding is that the only legal sports supplements that have be proved to have any benefits are caffeine and creatine. Everything else is a con.

In a previous role I was a senior manager in a business and was responsible for a project which spent millions launching a weight loss supplement. A few learnings from this experience:

Research generally shows that programmes which change eating habits (ie Weight watchers) are much more effective than tablet solutions. Tablet solutions tend to be used by crash dieters to get ready for a particular event (summer, wedding etc.)

It is very hard to stick to a tablet based programme over even the minimum period required which is usually 6 weeks.

I don't work for this company anymore so I can say with confidence that they are an expensive option that almost certainly won't work for you.

Anecdotally the fasting diet, 1 or 2 days a week, seems to be very useful for an cyclist since you can eat on days you are cycling and fast when you are not....

Thanks for the comments.

Ive lost around 1/2 stone. Now around 12 stone.

I will try and exercise before breakfast but unfortunately my circumstances means most exercise is after work.

I havent really drunk any green tea, would this prove beneficial.

I thought creatine was an endurance aid, as opposed to a weight loss, although I guess increased endurance enables greater calorific expenditure.

Interested in the water fast. Also suggested by a friend who teaches martial arts.

You've lost half a stone in six months? That doesn't like a particularly strict regime of diet and exercise...

No idea if the claims are genuine, or horseshit...I just know it exists. Up to you to do the research, fatso.

To be clear, creatine is a supplement that has a benefit to taking it. Not a weight loss benefit!

Given your current weight and the weight you hope to lose I stay well clear of the pills.

If you're trying to get really lean there is no substitute for hard graft I'm afraid.
