Two questions. The lot of you who are married, do you find you have to take your ring off to ride your bike? Does it fit under gloves?

Getting married soon and looking at rings, I don't want to have to take it off. The other half wants white gold but I think I will need Ti or I will trash it doing bike mechanics or generally being clumsy. Is gold as soft as I think or will it stand up to abuse ok? I would feel really bad if I had to buy a new ring at some point in the future just as I trashed the first one.

My wedding ring is gold and I dont have any problems with it. It appears to be standing up to lots of abuse too completely renovating a house and building walls etc... but then again I'm only 3 years in so by the time I'm 30 years in it might have worn away.

Mine fits under my gloves and is quite snug too, so I dont think it will fall off. Depends how chunky you want to go. I/we went for heavy weight platinum, so its fairly bulky and weighs around 14g. It does get a bit scuffed up but its got a brushed finish anyway and I think it will last longer than gold/white gold. I never take it off unless i am making dough, meatballs etc for hygene reasons.

I find mine fits under my gloves fine.

I went for a "brushed" (matt) finish to the ring which means scratches aren't so obvious and the jeweller can easily brush any obvious scores out ·only done this once and he did it for nothing, took 5 minutes.

If you're going to be really precious about it buy a finger band or sleeve that will protect it during bike maintenance.

plat and white gold combo for me - take it off when riding, take it off when washing up, cooking etc. don't feel the need to wear it 24/7

Don't get gold as it is soft as anything and will wear away over time. Look at palladium if you can't afford platinum.

Why bother with one at all?

I wear mine to ride in, but sometimes wonder whether I should in case it de-gloves my finger :wretch: but I'm scared of losing it (I lose everything)
careful with titanium ones - if anyone ever needs to cut your ring off for some reason, they won't be able to, plus it's not a very warm metal and can feel a little unnatural compared to gold

Google 'degloved finger' and then think again about riding with a ring on... 😯

I think white gold is a bit tougher than higher carat stuff - also I got mine made with rough cuts and a matt finish, so I'm not so bothered if it gets a bit bashed. It's metal anyway, it's tougher than your fingers. I wear mine for everything apart from skiing and cycling, as it isn't all that comfortable when your holding on to something for dear life...

Never wore a ring or any jewellery before, but it's nice having a wedding ring.

depends on what percentage of Gold is in the ring. Pure 24ct is very soft. 9ct is much more durable due to the alloying elements, 18ct is reasonably durable. 14ct is common in the US as a balance of gold content to durability.

Also if you are looking for rings I used to by from the wholesaler to use as the basis for other rings - but just buy one ring and choose the finish, profile, metal (Silver, Gold, Platinum, Palladium etc etc

http://www.cooksongold.com/Wedding-Ring-Blanks/

as for finish you will find overtime polished finishes dull and matt/satin finish up due to the burnishing effect bump and knocks.. nice to have a polished inner surface and a satin external

I think my wedding ring is 10ct, and in 17 years, was never a problem until I had to have it cut off my hand for surgery.

I wouldn't worry about what you might do to it. Even if teh ring gains a few scars, they will just become a part of your life's story.

I don't wear my wedding ring when riding bikes or horses, and nor does my wife with the latter. With horse riding leaving it on causes an annoying callous from the reins. On honeymoon we tied them to our saddles!

mines silver and it cost £7. Working on the idea that i lose/break everything and a lot of the rings i saw were just ugly (I wanted a plain band, and quite thin as i have little fingers).

I take mine off sometimes, and always before lifting at work, since I managed to crush it and nearly lost a finger!

Mine's quite chunky, but I can only wear it underneath gloves when riding.

It's actually slightly too big, so I'm saving up for a smaller size one (ooops!)

It's a cheap job for a jeweller to resize it.

I don't have fat knuckles so I have to remove my wedding ring for riding as it will easily slide off.

Learnt that one first ride after my first wedding when it slide off my finger and I had to spend 30 minutes looking for it...
mind you it could just have been a sign about the success of the marriage.

Mine is Titanium, I take it off when I do sports, mainly because I don't want to loose it. Would fit under gloves but have seen to many photos and videos where I use to work of people getting there ring caught on something.

Wear mine all the time and never had a problem until I lost 18Kg in weight and went down 2 full ring sizes. Got it re-sized for 50 quid and it came back polished up and good as new. A few weeks later it was back in it's bashed up state but stayed snug on my finger when riding instead of falling into the finger tip of my glove all the time. It's a platinum 5mm band from Tiffany's

They won't be able to resize it unfortunately.

Silver ring here too , very chunky too and fits under 661 and specialized gloves fine. Mrs carlos is allergic to gold even 24k stuff , we had our rings made by this bloke --> http://www.amulet.co.uk/amuletop.htm so they matched her engagement ring (silver but with a mahoosive diamond , very ouch when it came to paying for it)

palladium here , pretty tough and hard wairing - matt finishto start with and now pretty scratched up from forgetting to take it off when shifting boulders about doh!!

Quick polish up at the jewellers and it's all good again tho, had it sorted for last anniversary.

I use Haribo rings out of the Star Mix variety bags. It's cheaper that way as I have 17 wives, plus when I get hungry on the bike I can eat one.

Hello,
I wear my wedding ring all the time.Yes you can see some horrible injuries but like most things in life "what are the odds"
White gold is yellow gold that has been rhodium plated. The plating does wear of and is easily replated in many places. The strength depends on the purity of the gold used.
I highly recommend platimum.Very hard, does not mark or loose shape easily.
If possible go to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham. The prices are amazing, we got mine and the wifes rings in platinum for less than what we would have paid for gold on the high street. The choice and advice is fantastic.Around 120 jewellers in a quarter mile area.
Plus the added benifit of following you better half through 120 jewellers looking at thousands of rings and paying considerable less for better rings!

Mine's from Argos 😀 Really - it was the only one I found which I could see myself wearing forever!

White gold, nearly four years old now and I never take it off. It does have a few, tiny nicks and scratches but as said above - it's all character!

Love my titanium one. Made by a friend with a lathe, who was also kind enough to steal a chunk of titanium from work. Perfect, and wear it on the bike under gloves.

I have a titanium one, kind of the shape of plumbing olive. It is nice and thin so fits inside gloves no bother. As it is also a total pita to get off (read 10mins of swearing and soapy water) I rarely bother. This means a nice big callus has built up next to it so I think it might be proper hard to get off now. It's as tough as old boots and looks pretty much as it did the day I slipped it on 7 years ago.

This could be a big problem however - should I ever get it caught the emergency services can't normally cut a titanium ring off so have to remove the digit instead ❗

Mine's Ti for the reasons the op mentioned. No problems riding with it. In fact the only thing I had to take it off for is rowing as that rubbed the adjacent fingers.

Mine's ti (the 6/4 stuff) but I don't wear it while riding...or doing matril arts...or DIY...

...I don't like wearing rings. I'll wear it if we're going out. I'm not a ring person...plus the thought of an accident to my hand with an almost indestructable metal ring around my finger.

Platinum here. I've discovered that my fingers shrink quite substancially in the cold so I always take it off before I play out.

Platinum here & I usually take mine off before a ride, although it does fit under my gloves as I've discovered on the numerous occasions I've forgotten to take it off before heading out.

I try to take it off to avoid losing it/bending it out of shape/ripping my finger off. None of these have happened... yet.

And slightly OT, but if you're still to buy the rings head to a jewellery quarter somewhere (Birmingham or London for example). Mine & the wife's were half the price we were quoted in Bath for the same weight.

30 grams of platinum comes off easy when my fingers are cold or wet. I tend to leave it at home when I'm on the bike or swimming etc.
I'd be absolutely gutted if I ever lost my wedding ring - it's a total one off which I designed.
