MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
We've got an old car which has just passed its MOT and is now surplus to requirements
Can't really be bothered with private sale tyre kickers
It's probably worth 2000 max
Anyone used webuyanycar? I assume their business model relies on them turning up to collect the car and then finding all kinds of faults so they can haggle the price down
Am I wrong? Any alternatives worth considering?
You'll only get decent money if it's in great nick, has one owner and is a sought after car.
In which case, you'll get far more money selling privately. I sold my civic yesterday, put it on gum tree and facebook in the morning, was taken away at 6pm. Asked for 1900, got 1700, happy days.
WBAC price was 1650, I'd have struggled to get 1000 by time they pick holes in it.
I once took an old van to them, they went through their checklist, and said I'd need to give them 50 quid to take away.
I sold it for 800 quid that night.
Avoid. It's a sellers marker right now, I had unbelievable interest in the civic.
Value of £1200 for 160k 11 year old Galaxy.
I turned up, exactly as described (ie a wreck, but full service history in A4 folder, date order, stamped book etc).
Apart from the delivery inspection and handover page wasn't stamped from when the car was brand new - so they knocked £500 off.
I walked and garage matched the £1200 as trade in/scrap.
-£100 for any body panel with the lightest of damage was my experience on a 170k car, so not a surprise to anyone that it wasn't forecourt fresh.
Things they didn't know, most of the undertray was missing, the petrol cover release cable had snapped and there was less than a breath of fuel left in it. I felt bad about none of this after the suggested price being slashed at the time of dropping the car off to them.
Next time I needed shot of a car I put it on ebay with a base price, guy got in touch offered a reasonable amount over asking and turned up when he said he would to collect it, it didn't even start as it had been static for a while he didn't care and came back the next day to jump it and collect. It was a type R so he wanted the engine though making it a little easier to sell.
In my experience of one attempt, your guess is exactly correct.
To the point I told them to forget it, and sold it privately for 25% more than they offered.
It was a insignia estate, they originally (online) valued at £2495, after seeing it, that offer was reduced to £2000, and I sold it privately, 5 days later, for £2500.
Took an oldish Ka to them. They knocked off 50 quid for any blemish visible with a microscope. Walked away.
My parents sold to them. Old, fairly broken Rover 75. They offered £600 on the web, £500 in real life, they just went with it for the sake of quick and easy.
Just sold old Freelander 2 with them. Could not have been quick and easier. Guess I might have got a bit more privately but Given lack of hassle and instant sale can’t fault it. Helps if you ha W service history etc.
conversely .
my folks sent their Evoque there last year needing a guaranteed quick sale.
They got pretty much what market value was.
I suspect their car was more WBAC target market - they dont want the wrecks they want the as above good stuff they can sell on with ease. They will take your wreck but wont give you good money for it.
Folks evoque was one owner low milage , mint condition although 7 years old. fully stamped book although i know it had only had a single fuel filter in that time (and i fitted it ) so i dont trust the local Range rover dealer any further than i could throw them.
They got the price quoted and they got it on the day the specified which meant they could ditch the car jump in the van and hottail to france on the same day ..... no tire kicking and hassle on the last day.
Dad did similar with his FJR1300 - again mint condition a WBAM style company made an offer based on detailed photos and one showing the service log and paid full asking price - It was sold on again pretty much the same day.
So if your getting knocked down they probably just simply dont want your car
they offered me 200 quid for the old berlingo..... anything with a fresh MOT is worth more than that privately ..... i got 650 for it .... but absolutely wasnt a car they would want - as if they did anything other than auction it they would have to warrenty it
I'll quote a friend of mine's comment when he received a valuation from We Buy Any Car: "So do I at that price, ****!"
Experience from a few years with MIL and Mrs RNP selling recently deceased husband/father's 2year old mint VW Passat with FVWSH - I had to get involved as the price difference between what quoted and the smug **** in the office was miles apart. Truly awful experience - I would rather scrap a car than deal with them.
Iirc the guy who views the car earns comission on 'flaws' and anything they knock off.
Sold my 2012 C3 Picasso with them - FSH, low mileage - they knocked a few fifties off book value for some imperceptible flaws which was OK as he missed the crease in the roof from when I went under a car park height restriction with a roof rack (bike unscathed!)
Best to sell them a car with an major or about to be major catastrophic failure (e.g. turbo charger gone/cylinder head gasket away/autobox about to die etc) otherwise deal with the tyre kickers. I amuse myself by haggling up with the annoying ones.
As above, sold my last car through them and they knock you down on all sorts of things. They didn’t however notice the DMF rattle at start up, and weren’t aware of the DPF issues.
For me it was worth it as I didn’t want to sell a car with those issues to a private buyer, it was a guilt free sale with we buy any car.
Same as others, took a VW Golf plus, website offered £2500, he tried to say the car had been resprayed and one side a different shade to the other (it wasnt, I knew the cars history) and took £900 off the website price. Said no thanks, drove across the road to local Evan Halshaw whose process was also extremely easy (although they would not look at the car there and then, it had to be booked in to be looked at) - guy took 30 photos of car, emailed head office, got a offer of £2400 the next day 🙂
