Went to the AD on Friday. So true what they say about trying things on. From previous comments I thought my wife (who was very embarassed at first and then soon got used to pampering...) would be into a Cartier Must but, and she was quite right, it just didn't sit well on her wrist. Nor was she a big fan of the JLC Reverso two-handers. Not that she didn't like but the 'flip' was of no interest to her and she has a clear preference for Roman numerals. Then I asked for the Americaine...

BAM, perfect fit first time. We tried the medium but despite Mrs Gaidong not having very gracile limbs, the small was the obvious winner.

https://www.watchuseek.com/attachments/20220211_150240-jpg.16431866 /" alt="" />

The curvature of the case follows her wrist very nicely. I'm not sure it'll be the easiest to read in 20 years' time but we'll cross that bridge... in 20 years?

https://www.watchuseek.com/attachments/20220211_151451-jpg.16431869 /" alt="" />

Now just a strap to choose. Oh, and the small matter of me saving up to pay for it!

I like that datejust, nice dial and it's great to have a watch with history/memories. I hope my kids or their husbands wear my watches after I've gone, and occasionally think of me when they do

One of my late cousins watches, given to me by his sister

That’s a really nice watch, the blue face is very “of its time” but it looks good - class will always out.

@gaidong
Mrs Gaidong didn’t mind being the model for the day? And she’s looking forward to her beautiful future present…

@gaidong - that’s a very classy watch, and as you say, the perfect fit. The blue alligator strap looks best, the ideal combination as far as I’m concerned.
She modelled the watch very well, too - she aught to consider a job as a photographers hand-model for jewellery!

Morning STW-WIS!

I agree @countzero, the blue strap looks nicer but in a cold and clinical way that doesn't suit my wife (she wears a LOT of cherry red). There was an incredible difference between the colour of the Camille Fournet strap leathers in hand and in photo. In any event, I'm not buying until next year, when the big birthday is but also to get the full warranty, and maybe there'll be some model change. The Americaine has been around for a few decades now so there should be something suitable. Indeed, I could get a second hand white gold one in the same size for the same price or cheaper! But this'll be a daily and will get scratched AF.

@SSS, she did mind very much at first! I am the big spender by far in our marriage. Or rather, she spends less overall but more on 'experiences' whereas I'm into non-perishables, for myself and others. (She was very unimpressed with her Lego Bouguet this morning... https://www.lego.com/fr-fr/product/flower-bouquet-10280)

@gaidong that lego bouquet is awesome. Im going to buy Mrs SSS one for next year, or her birthday this year 😀

Mrs SSS wants a Rolex DateJust, steel/gold for her birthday ref 279171, but until she starts wearing her Tag Aquaracer often (she wears a Garmin) she isnt getting one....

However, back to 1980s casio modules (circa 1985) here is a TS-1200 module 515 - which has seen better days, but still works.

Where else can you see Cartiers and Casios in the same thread??

Any grand Seiko fans? I've developed a lusting for sbga 229 or 231 (or the older incarnations).

Oh and can anyone tell me what the model code letters and numbers mean? S for sports? A for spring drive? (H mechanical?)

£2k doesn't seen outrageous for an automatic Swiss chronograph. If it said Speedy on the dial....

Also, these new black Seiko's look pretty smart, popped into my news feed this morning. Fratello.

I have something nice coming.  Not PP or JLC nice but something I've wanted for while.  Have to shift some things so any interest on any of these before they go to Chrono24 or eBay

2020 Tudor Black Bay 41.  Black face.  Brown leather

Seiko King Turtle "Manta Ray". Blue face.  Bracelet.

Bulova Lunar Pilot.  (no date version). On black leather.  OEM NATO it came on is unused.

Escapement Time Flieger.  Type B dial.  Brown leather

Those black edition Seikos look really good. If I hadn’t just bought the green sumo from @neilnevill, I would have been really tempted.

I can’t get my head around £2k for a Tissot, it looks great though.

Personally I'm not sure why - its a 100% made in Switzerland piece with an ETA/Vajoux movement, Sapphire, 100m push-pull auto chrono, as above you'd be paying more with another name on it.

That may be true, growing up the Tissots I saw were generally viewed as a cheaper option watch with minimal desirability. Probably unfair, as that does look like a lovely piece.

Yeah, perception means a lot when spending big money. The perception here being Tissot also make cheap(ish) quartz models so are a bit of a middling brand. Maybe the reason Omega dropped the Quartz a few years before their prices started approaching Rolex!

Does anyone know if you can buy the seiko Seichu style straps ? I do like the look of the ones in the promo pics for those black edition seikos.

Quick google suggests you can get seiko straps, but specifically the Seichu style ones.

I bought hard to find Seiko straps from Masters in Time.  They are in Holland but I wouldn't have an issue using them again.  If anywhere has what you're after it'll be them

Postman delivers here too, thanks to @neilnevill I now have a new (new to me anyway) watch. Never really fancied a green faced watch, but I think this is fantastic, in most lights it doesn’t really look green, almost black.

Very pleased.

I’d love a green watch but not brave enough yet.  I posted up a bronze Rado Captain Cook with a green dial a few months back. I’d go for that when the time comes

If you like the styling of the Tissot but don't want to spend £2k, then Yema do some similar 'vintage chronographs' with a mecha quartz movement for a lot less...

The lume isn't that great on the Yemas I've seen, but the finish is good for the price point, and they seem solid and reliable.

I like the green on my Pantor a lot more than I thought I would seeing as how I don't usually like green. It seems just that bit more casual than blue and even more see than black

I'd quite like something similar in decently bright red now.

Great! Glad you like it walowiz! It does change from almost black to that golden green sunburst according to the light, which is something I enjoyed about it.

Hmmm a bronze captain cook with green dial... Sweet!

Standard answer - a Seiko, there are plenty of lovely dress watches at that sort of price.  Creation Watches are a good place to buy from if you don't mind an import.

https://meranom.com/en/ Enjoy!

Takes 6 weeks or so to get to you, but great value. I paid £87 for my scuba dude Batman gmt, watched it track across Russia for 4 weeks, then Moscow to London on a flight arriving 2 days later. It was worth the wait though.

Online.vostockinc.com has been better than Meranom recently. Better stock and prices. Despite what Meranom say, vostokinc really is the factory store.

Oh dear. Against my better nature, I clicked on the Meranom link. First watches I saw, the Airship model, I thought to myself, hmmm, those are rather nice, and then I got to the bottom, and spotted the Gagarin watches, with the aged lume.
It’s not like I need another watch, and I seldom wear anything other than dive watches, or my Yema chrono, but damn, those are really nicely styled watches in a properly retro design.

Hmmm, just checked the prices - £287. Guess it’s going to have to wait.

Anything similar? Automatic? And is Watchgecko the only reasonable place to buy them?

You can get Yema direct from the manufacturer via. the web, and more often than not there's a 10% discount offered.

At least you could pre-brexit, might be a bit of an issue with import now.

I’ve seriously considered a NavyGraf, Yema now have their own movements, and I really like the style of that particular watch. My Yema, despite it saying 100% waterproof on the caseback, won’t go anywhere near water!

It’s fifty years old, and a chrono, without a screw-down crown, plus an acrylic crystal, so wearing in the shower is a no-no. I’m even wary about having it on when I wash my hands - a service and mainspring replacement cost me £400-odd, I can’t afford to risk any damage to the movement. Yema have a decent history as a company, although they went through a bad patch when they got involved with Seiko, and ended up as a subsidiary brand making tacky-looking fashion watches.

The NavyGraf is a nice looking tool watch, if I had some spare cash, I’d have one in a flash!

I am looking for a Seiko 5 field watch, to wear daily and I have always fancied a mechanical / automatic.

The green dial ones are now £160 online, but can be bought from creation watches or jomashop for a lot less. I realised I may be liable for 20% import duty but even with this added on they are a fair bit cheaper.

Has anyone used these online retailers and are there any other costs / considerations?

TBH I had moved on from them a bit and was previously considering offloading my (modded) amphibia. yes they're Cheap, modifiable reasonably rugged watches but they don't really feel like very refined products.

I did wear a komandirski to work yesterday though...

A birthday gift from Mrs K today:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/kryton1957/51917210403/in/photostream/

Its a lovely thing, and a proper super compressor. I've tried to capture the sunburst, raised multi faceted indices and the compression ring, very difficult to show the amazing way it catches the light, even indoors. Its not dusty btw, thats the lense on my phone....

Details here if interested.

One of the 'buttons' (Crowns) rotates the bezel inside the case, which is super cool. The other one is the normal winding/time setting crown.

Yea that’s it, an internal bezel - that’s the top/orange highlighted crown ^^

You can see more detail on the website but the super compressor means the orange ring - the compression ring - you can see through the case back and through the oval holes it has a very thin opposing spring against the gasket, meaning the more pressure on the caseback the more waterproof it becomes. It’s an older technology revised but a nice to have from a horological perspective.

The detail is pretty amazing, sapphire front and back and being domed on the front it really highlights those multi faceted indices. It wears bizarrely thin and light - it weirdly gets heavier when you take it off. Plus at 32,0000 the Sellia almost sweeeps, you just need to squint a bit.

CW are very good, I my C60 bronze trident, very good quality and the sellita200 movement is very accurate indeed. That super compressor is lovely. Is there a reason/advantage to the internal bezel?

I've gone n-1, donating my Tissot visodate as a prize in a charity raffle on tz-uk to support Ukraine. But then saw something on sales corner so back to n.

Watched this thread (see what I did there) from afar for a while but yet to dive in. Now have a hankering for another watch (N+1).

What’s the quality of Timex like? Something along the lines of this style: https://www.timex.co.uk/waterbury-classic-chronograph-40mm-leather-strap-watch/TW2R71700D7PF.html

I’ll get some pics of my current watches for ogling soon. Omega SMP, my granddad’s Rotary that’s 8 days older than me, and various other tat.
