We will be in touch
I do actually work on a nuclear research base, and although I don't have clearance for the 'hot' areas, the story holds at least. The Milgauss has to be put on a silly strap I think, blue or orange. The Bluesy needs toning down unless you're actually in Miami. I'm not keen on PCLs generally but, looking out the window at the grey, I really fancy a piece that will have the magpies (avian, not criminal) circling. I'd use my Pelagos for actual wet activities. I had an OP white/silver dial in 2020 but sold it last autumn. It was the most accurate watch I had but it got boring quite quickly. In terms of a flip though, you can find people asking €65k for the OP41 baby blue, a €5750 watch, on C24! Lowest offers are high 20ks, so presumably anything lower is selling! The order seems to be: baby blue, yellow/red, green, dark blue, silver, black. All bonkers.
This seems a good thread for brain picking….
Ive inherited my dads omega polaris, can anyone recommend a site to sell it on… ebay feels a bit hit and miss.
Id rather an Omega Aquaterra 15000 gauss. Or a used Railmaster if looking for an 'engineers' watch thats anti magnetic.
The Milgauss is just so uninspiring, boring if you will.....
I do actually work on a nuclear research base
Not sure I'd be telling a load of random strangers on t'Internet that but I'm sure you know best...
That Sub is a bit bright for my taste. Both the shiny bracelet and the blue. I like the classic black dial/stainless bracelet combo as it's a bit understated though obv a bit more 'common' (read popular)
I've been through the Omega line and there's not much I like at present. The Constellation annual calendar looks nice but wears huge. Seamaster 300s can be nice but nothing stand out. Speedmasters... just sold a FOIS a few months ago. The AQs do nothing for me.
Agreed that the Milgauss probably isn't the way forward. I grew up in Dorset, not in but associated to a yachtie crowd, so the Bluesy could be an ironic-not-ironic tip of the hat to my yoof. I guess it depends on wait times, no way I go grey.
@boblo, why? No weapons there (apart from the guards). I said I have no access to restricted areas. Maybe I'm just a janitor!
As for the black Sub Date, sure, much better for daily wear but that's not what I'm looking for.
@scrumfled, I'm not familiar with that model but I can find two on C24 - https://www.chrono24.fr/omega/ref-3861231.htm#gref. I've sold quite few watches there and never had problems. They take 6% with no minimum and the system seems to work well.
Thought I’d post this, for those who appreciate ultimate watch engineering, at truly mind-buggering prices; as in you could buy a house for that!

Going back to my remark about having a hackable movement in the SPORK, and others responding with it doesn’t really matter; I was thinking about this earlier today, and it’s perfectly true; I have found a way to ‘hack’ it, by putting the minute hand just past the time required just as the second hand passes 12 o’clock, then carefully winding the minute hand backwards. With care, the second hand will move back, and can be paused at 12 o’clock, and the minute hand placed just before the required time; as the reference time comes up moving the minute hand to the correct time releases the second hand. I can now set the time to the second without too much effort, takes a bit of practice but it’s not much different to a proper hacking movement. Hand-winding after a period of not being used might be nice, but again, it’s really not that important. I checked the accuracy this morning, after a week of wearing the SPORK, and it’s gained 21 seconds, pretty much three seconds a day! Not bad for a £250 watch.
I can get some of my non-hacking movements to set by letting them run down and then winding as the real time approaches the seconds hand time. Varies from movement to movement. The 1861 in my Omega FOIS was almost instant. My ETA 6498-1 deck watch needs 1-2s of winding before the second hand moves. Vostok, not sure, hardly seems worth it!!
I went MTBing today for the first time in months. I did a mere 22 km with 330 climbing and one fall in the mud. I wore my G-Shock Square, so we're all good on that front. Now collapsed on sofa.
Interesting point about wearing a watch while riding. I don't as I'm ultra anal about not marking any of my watches, even my G-Shock which is pretty much indestructible. I know there's another view that a well worn watch is a good thing and the scratches are a good thing.
Anyone else do everything thay can to avoid them though?
If I could afford it, the bluesy! Or a smurf... In white gold. The bluesy on rubber is a great look imo.
@bullet, I wear my Explorer 1 daily and yes, it's getting marks. I take it off for certain activities, and on my desk I rest my left wrist on a cloth to reduce damage but not eliminate it.
@neilnevill, I'm not keen on the new Smurf with the black dial (as though it were a possibility LOL) and didn't like the last one because of the super case. Same with the Hulk vs Cermit. I could have bought a Sub back in 2012/13 but decided against it and went for the Tudor BB. I don't have perfect memory of the decision but I wanted the more classic look (BB bigger I grant) and must have instinctively not liked the super case back then. I'm not sure what I'd do if the AD offered me a Cermit. Stupid to turn it down financially but it doesn't appeal to me.
It's a tricky dilemma I'm sure we all face at least monthly. 🤪
I know my place in the pecking order, no way I could get a Daytona (which I also don't like!). 😀
Anyone else do everything thay can to avoid them though?
Yep, including not liking any of much watches any more except for the Arnie, so they are all tucked away in a box.
I discovered two disappointing things about a watch I want at the weekend, which is this:

a) Its £33,000 and will never grace my presence
b) Its only 50m WR, I mean seriously wtf....
Still, we can all have a dream eh?
Used to wear the Sub, even mountain biking until i got the SMP300.
Wear the SMP all the time now generally even on the bike and other pursuits. The SMP is a 36mm so less weight on the wrist and main reason for the switch.
Wear the SMP generally unless doing an endurance ride, then switch to the Casio as less wear on my wrist.
I dont tend to bash the watches to be fair so getting them damaged isnt a concern. From the 6 years continuous wearing the Sub before the SMP came along, theres very little marks.
Summary, i dont change watches in case i damage the watch, i only change it to stop irritation on my skin.
@kryton57 its only 50m?? Id have thought more..... even the Patek is 30m.
"Its £33,000"... now it ain't! Prices starting at €68k for mere after market mortals (link).
Yup, they are only 50m resistant. But if you're that wealthy surely you can just buy another one if you damage it 😀
Ok, well thats what it said here, but maybe thats mates rates or some unobtainable price for normal humans...
Yes, that's the retail price, but only the select few can get them. I've never even bothered going in the AP boutique, not got the money (or even close) and don't much like anything they do. For AP/PP certain models, mainly grande complications, you need to be a big big spender already AND you have to pass an interview LOL.
AND you have to pass an interview LOL
Like in films. Only 'good guys' and approved characters get to use and seen to use Apple products.
Baddies have to use Android.... 😀
Is it just me, or is that AP image some kind of weird photograph/CGI mashup? Dial and strap look real, case doesn't.
I've worn my Explorer 1 almost every day since I've bought it. My Speedmaster gets a bit more action in the last 6 months but overwhelmingly my daily watch is the Explorer.
It's definitely picked up its fair share of scratches. Not dings/dents, yet. The polished bezel is an absolute scratch magnet, but once you've got a few on there you get over it and it looks fine.
The clasp is fairly battered from laptop working and desks and stuff I guess. I've never noticeable bashed it, but theres a few deep scratches there. Same with the bracelet itself, plenty of wear there.
I really don't mind though, the brushed design hides wear very well, and watches like this are meant to be worn. No safe queens here!
My Pelagos has taken a right beating, despite having not had it even a year but used it exclusively in marine environments. I think that is the level I'm comfortable with regular wear and tear. If I got a Sub, especially a TT, then I would not be comfortable with bashing.
.
I agree about the new smurf (personally Mr Bump works better as a name, blue when Becky mouth...no? It could catch on). The sunburst blue dial of the old one though means I can look post the case. I never disliked the maxi case though.
Pelagos smurf is very nice, tool watch compared to beautiful... Mine lines on a blue sailcloth with white stitching and a formex deployant.
Upon reflection, I suspect I have breached Rule 1 on this thread. To Kryton and all, my apologies. I have been following it for a long time and have enjoyed participating greatly but need to calm it down. Watches seem to have the habit of leading me to excess!
I think you're ok @gaidong, I quite like seeing a few bits of unobtainable kit mixed with with the usual SKX's and the like.
What lunge said, who made any rules anyway?
Personally this thread remains fantastically educational for me and I love seeing/understanding some of the higher end pieces being displayed.
Does he mean n - 1 talk? Still good in my view and yes I too enjoy reading about watches I'll never get closer to. It's nice to know a little about them from an owner's perspective.
I read omega doing another 4.8% price rise today or tomorrow. That's and %9 in 3 months I think! Glad I jumped and bought my SMP just before the last rise
Edit, yep it's happened. £4840 now for the SMP!
Another one for the cheapskates.
This arrived last night:

And if you squint you can see a resemblance to krytons dream AP royal Oak above, double the water resistance but no bronze, slightly less smooth second hand, does save you £32,900 quid though...
I have a black 22mm QR Barton Elite Silicon band for sale if anyone wants it, barely used £14 posted. Both strap lengths and original box included.
Any views on Dekla watches? I'm after a Type A Flieger to wear where I don't want anything fancier, not sure it's worth spending Laco/Stowa money and happened across Dekla as a more affordable option. (Basic requirement is a clean/unbranded classic dial, automatic with no date)
Like the Edifice. I was after an Oceanus for a while as a work watch but never managed to get one.
No knowledge of Dekla but they look nice. I'm biased as I have one but the Steinhart Nav-B Chrono is nice and looks like the sort of thing you are after? Worth a look maybe?
https://www.steinhar****ches.de/en/flieger-watch/nav-b-chrono-47-mm-schwarz.html
I'm sure a Dekla has been reviewed on JOMW.
I think I looked at Dekla a while ago but saw some QC problems - there might even be some photos a few pages back of the hands looking a bit rough.
Edit - I did and there was.
Walowiz, me I think, I promised photos and… Life over took me ! I’ll get some.
Any chance of some pics ? Am stuck at home window shopping watches and beer.
I’ve fallen in lust…. Again.

I’ve fallen in lust…. Again.
That looks absolutely stunning, great combo of colours and materials. Perhaps unsurprisingly that hasn’t popped up whilst I’ve been browsing this morning, maybe I need to up my price filter a little bit.
Well interestingly I had a 1 year savings plan going - which matures Monday - for a "significant birthday" Bike, and seeing as it equates to the same price as that, bikes aren't available, and its my birthday soon...
Well I am surprised I thought that Breitling superocean heritage would be pricier than it is, that is a really lovely watch one of the best I’ve seen on this thread.
**** sorry walowiz, keep waiting for a sunny day to get some good photos of the dial, and keep forgetting!
Monday's idle thought, I've found myself looking at the Tudor Black Bay 36 over the weekend. Are Tudor watches 'investment' pieces, i.e. will generally retain their value to an extent?
Tudor can hold value but definitely aim for a discount on a less 'hot' piece. I got 15% off my Pelagos last year. Last month I sold my 2013 BB for €3500 having bought for €2700. Taking into account one service and some inflation, 8 years of ownership cost me nothing more or less.
@everyone, coming home from Paris now. Asked for a Sub. Got nudged to buy something for my missus first 😄. Something for my wife's 50th was already planned but it's now a condition. Fair enough and at least I didn't get laughed out of the store!
That's a pretty good discount for a pelagos.
The super Ocean is nice, great dial. I find the lugs look weirdly fat but perhaps in person they aren't
That is the first Breitling that has had me nodding my head and making mmm noises.
Very attractive piece.
Edit, yep it’s happened. £4840 now for the SMP!
@neilnevill somehow I managed to avoid that double increase as well and I paid at least £1k less than the RRP a couple of months ago. I've no idea how/why but I was concerned I'd bought a dud until Omega confirmed it was pukka.
Not sure on the depreciation curve but I'm pretty certain I won't lose if I choose to sell - unless I trash it or something silly like that.
It seems there’s an answer to the shortage of Rolex watches - stop being poor!

https://www.dmarge.com/2022/02/rolex-shortage-solution.html/blockquote >Slightly provocative article (which to be fair it leads with) but I guess given the Rolex prices it’s not a poor man’s game and who just wonders in to a shop and buys an £180k watch !
I’ve seen the whole Rolex game on other forums and find the fact that everyone accepts the AD approach interesting and puzzling, as that just wouldn’t fly in nearly any other product sector.

I’m sure I saw a documentary where a Ferrari dealer said if you wanted one of their more exotic models brand new priority, I.e any chance at all, went to those with a purchase history. So similar issues, luxury and highly desirable item, limited number of products (Rolex aren’t going to be increasing factory output, I believe, not100% on that, they have stated they are at capacity) AD gets to set market and if anything this restriction on supply inflates the perceived value of the product.
Does anyone know about replating with Rose Gold?
My wife has a Skagen watch and the plating has worn off/discoloured on the mesh strap. A replacement strap is around £50 (in fact a similar Skagen watch is that price in the sale too). Could the strap be replated at a very reasonable cost?
**** sorry walowiz, keep waiting for a sunny day to get some good photos of the dial, and keep forgetting!
Found the pic and small blurb 🙂 on page 86 (which leads me to why isn't there a "jump to page" option at the bottom of long running threads ?), if it still looks like the picture (hopefully below), then very interested.

@dmorts. Your BB36 would be fine. There was a rush and some aftermarket premiums when the 58 blue and the panda chronos came out but it settles down and you can get everything no problem.
Is there a good place to sell a couple of G-Shocks? I dont expect they are worth much but sitting in a drawer doing nothing. Ebay is an option but they skim a lot in fees now!
A GA-100 in the blue

and a AWG-M100B

I know there are some G-Shock enthusiasts on this thread!
Just popping in to say I've had excellent service from Calibre, having my Aquaracer chrono serviced for the first time in 15 years.
I can't attest to the insides of course, but outside its as sparkly as new, cleaned to an inch of its life and the crown less stiff and more smooth than it was. A case and postage envelope was provided to send it, and it was return today after 2 weeks and immediately after I paid at 3pm yesterday lovingly wrapped and in a nice Calibre box.
Recommended and will use again.
I think ypu posted right? Thanks for doing so.
@Kryton57 yes. I’d just had my Subby serviced and returned by Calibre when someone asked for recommendations.
Just completed phase 1 of sorting my stuff out and finally for the first time in longer than I can remember I’ve managed to find all my watches ! So hopefully below is my little collection.

So hopefully below is my little collection.
I don't wish to be unduly harsh here but that's an awful photo.
I don’t wish to be unduly harsh here but that’s an awful photo.
Agreed, my phone just would not focus correctly on those, that was actually the best one I took.
Will have another crack at it later.
Will have another crack at it later
Cheers, I look forward to having a proper look at the Samurai?, Gen 1 Monster and the mystery watches!
@johnners Ok, so had another go, had to take separate pics to get the damn phone to focus properly on each watch.
First up samurai and the monster. The monster is my favourite watch, had it a very long time now.

My seiko auto relay, bought with my very first full time grown up wage. Also had this a very long time.

Random one this, my father bought this and it is lovely, but he didn’t know that the battery is non replaceable, so bit of a bugger that now the battery is flat.

Last two are a random skeleton watch my father bought me many many years ago (he likes them) and the knackered looking metal watch is my grandfather’s from WWII, he claimed he swapped some smokes for it from an American soldier whilst in India.
What is a shame now is the smaller watches just don’t suit my large wrists, so I never wear them, in an ideal world I’d sell the skeleton - but I’m not sure it’s worth anything any more.
Not pictured is my garmin Vivoactive 4 which is up from sale.

@walowiz Nice. I know what you mean about the Monster, my Gen 1 is my favourite. Yours definitely looks like it's been out a lot, it's good to see a watch that's been worn to within an inch of its life!
I like that auto-relay a lot, the case and bezel puts me in mind of a Casio I bought in the early 90s. It's a shame you've gone off the smaller watches, I find they look odd for about 5 minutes after I've been wearing something bigger but I soon get used to them.
The Swatch and the skeleton aren't really my cup of tea but I'd be surprised if there wasn't someone somewhere who could fit a new battery if you want to keep using it - and it must be collectable, themed Swatches usually are.
I like the Titus too, it's also had a good caning by the looks of it!
Monster has been worn on many surfing holidays and used every time I’m in the sea / ocean. It’s still my go to watch for getting dressed up, quick clean and it brushes up well. And really I just like it.
The Titus is interesting, the old boy wore it for years in India in the war, then after as a mechanic, then it sat in a box for years, then I got it, had it serviced by another old boy at the old school watch repair shop and was advised to leave it as is, with all its blemishes etc, which I have. It’s quite light and keeps really good time, which was a pleasant surprise.
It’s not a patch on the super dooper expensive watches out there, but the Seiko auto relay was genuinely amazing when I bought it about 30 years ago, the demo in the shop when the sales guy took it out the drawer, showed my father and I the date and time which were both out of whack, he then shook the watch a few times and the hands magically go round and like magic it’s all correct. Still makes me smile today.
Monday’s idle thought, I’ve found myself looking at the Tudor Black Bay 36 over the weekend. Are Tudor watches ‘investment’ pieces, i.e. will generally retain their value to an extent?
Depends on the price you’re paying. There’s one on the TZUK classifieds at £1750 at the moment.
I do think that Tudors will hold value to a certain point but it won’t be spectacular. I think I got about £1200 for a Ranger that was retailing at £2k at the time (I earned back what I paid for it).
Tudors are nice watches though. I’ve got a North Flag (possibly selling it) and a BB GMT at the moment.
Bolo, £1k off RRP was a great price! I had been watching various places for ages and in the end used James Henry watches (top gent) and got 20% off. Yes I agree, you/we wouldn't lose much of selling now, private sale at least, dealer sale you'd lose a little.
Wolowiz, yes that's it. I'll get some fresh photos when home from the girls swimming lessons, currently sunny in slightly in South London so if it stays that way I'd hope to capture the dial nicely. Yes it's unmarked besides the usual swirls. Currently sized for my 6.5-6.75" wrist but I've the spare links and will put the original Seiko clasp and divers extension back on it. I've had a strapco/miltat/swc glidelockalike clasp on it, I found the original Seiko clasp really long... Although come to think of it the 62 Mas currently on my wrist has the same clasp and... Must have been the watch head. The sumo is large at 45mm but I found out really comfy, the Seiko cases have huge underside chamfers and nine curves to them lugs so seem to hug wrists well. The fat bezel also meant it is visually smaller than the dimensions suggest, definitely not my biggest visually. I really like it, but since I got hold of this , one of 2018 limited edition Japan made, 62 Mas modern interpretations, with an incredibly vibrant green dial to die for, 2 green Seikos seems OTT. Should complement your collection though! Love the orange Munster! Great fun beach beater! Although the sumo will give it a run for that title.
Hot Tudor...bb58, BB, particularly the original smiley dial, pelagos, chrono. These all hold within 20% or closer of RRP. The Harrods BB still sells above rrp. I think most other Tudors do ok, but drop more, maybe 30-40% from RRP
@neilneville that is a very nice looking modern 62MAS, that dial really pops.
I’m selling my Swatch Sistem51 Hodinkee Generation 1986 to make way for a new watch (N-1?).
On eBay here:
http://ebay.us/GbL6i9?cmpnId=5338273189
More information from Hodinkee here:
https://shop.hodinkee.com/collections/limited/products/swatch-sistem51-hodinkee-generation-1986
Is the Swatch any different to other Swatch watches? Is it just the collector factor that bumps the price up?
No trolling, just curious.
Thank you, yes the dial pops doesn't it!
One of my late cousins watches, given to me by his sister
Is the Swatch any different to other Swatch watches? Is it just the collector factor that bumps the price up?
No trolling, just curious.
Yeah just the collector factor. It was one of the first to have a Nivachron balance spring though which is a titanium-based alloy that is resistant to magnetism, shocks, aging, and temperature variation, providing a better and more consistent chronometric performance. I also think it’s a really good looking watch (but I’m probably biased though, that’s why I bought it). I am open to offers.
