Super Compressor is a lovely watch Kryton.

I had the brown dialled version but had to send it back due to a problem with the text on the dial being off centre.  I'd have anther though and the dark blue is really nice

I posted the same link last night after a, (reasonable) crack about not buying Russian watches.

CW are very good, I my C60 bronze trident, very good quality and the sellita200 movement is very accurate indeed. That super compressor is lovely. Is there a reason/advantage to the internal bezel?

I've gone n-1, donating my Tissot visodate as a prize in a charity raffle on tz-uk to support Ukraine. But then saw something on sales corner so back to n.

Watched this thread (see what I did there) from afar for a while but yet to dive in. Now have a hankering for another watch (N+1).

What’s the quality of Timex like? Something along the lines of this style: https://www.timex.co.uk/waterbury-classic-chronograph-40mm-leather-strap-watch/TW2R71700D7PF.html

I’ll get some pics of my current watches for ogling soon. Omega SMP, my granddad’s Rotary that’s 8 days older than me, and various other tat.

They're just OK, I have a similar one from Timex without the gold tone parts and it feels very cheap even for the money. It's not been worn much at all.

I just picked up a Rotary watch yesterday for around the same price and it feels much more premium with better water resistance, better attention to detail and the second hand actually hits the indices.

Yes, it’s a rumoured-to-be-made-by-rotary very good quality watch. Plenty of reviews to Google.

Fair enough, not really a similar style of watch to the Timex he was proposing though is it?

My first 'proper' watch was a Rotary; about £150 c1978.

Thanks. Glad I asked as that sounds like I'd be disappointed. I’m genuinely a bit lost in knowing the dross from the decent brands in watches. It's that style I'm looking for as an alternative / daily wearer, at that sort of price point. Not really sure what else to consider so any suggestions for a simple design, leather strap, sub-£100 in that style welcomed.

My current watches - not a spectacular history compared to most in this discussion, but this is where I am:

Animal: bought in 1997 with my first pay from a summer job between school and uni. Original velcro strap was a health hazard after a few years (if you've had one you'll know), currently fitted with a black leather with subtle yellow stitching. Needs another new battery, too sentimental to ever sell.

Casio G-Shock: c2002 I think? Doubled up for diving use when I did a bit of that. Subsequently used on holidays use when I was concerned about taking my Omega. Original battery only recently died but I resurrected it with a new one after taking this photo.

Rotary Flyer: c1978, my grandad's watch. The warranty card shows it registered a few days before I was born, so a nice bit of family history. Its had the crack on the face for as long as I’ve had it. The original expanding metal bracelet rips hairs out of your wrist so I wear it with a plain leather strap.

Omega Seamaster Professional: c2005, given to me by the future Mrs a11y as ‘recompense’ for an engagement ring. I'll never sell this. Currently worn daily but I’m looking for some variety and other options to give this a break occasionally, hence dipping into this watch thread.

I had a play around with some straps on the CW yesterday, I'd be interested in what you guys think:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/kryton1957/51924263620/

A black Zulu tropic. I think the black strap rely makes the watch "pop" vs the OEM blue, and this'll be my default.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/kryton1957/51924263605/in/photostream/

Brown leather. I was surprised by this, it looks better than I thought. For me this takes it to "smart casual" office wear or dining out perhaps.

That’s a nice watch!
Prefer the black over the brown. My blue faced breitling ended up looking pretty good an orange zulu strap, quite an informal look though.

Thanks Kilo. They do provide an OEM orange strap as an example here (I don't have one) and I was keen on it personally.

I think my orange one was a fairly cheap Amazon job, that’s the beauty of Zulu straps, doesn’t cost much to experiment.

Since someone mentioned Rotary, I wonder if folk could give info on mine. I think it's about 30 years old.

@kryton57

my Super Compressor was on the orange Tiber strap. It was really nice and I highly recommend it

No help on that Rotary but a quick look at their current range and I thought some of them looked pretty nice to be fair.

@Kryton57 the black strap doesn’t really do it for me, the brown is a better look.

I’m sure I’ve seen a CW strap that was blue with Orange stitching that could be interesting on that watch. Or was it the other way round? It looked good whichever way it was.

@Kryton57 I prefer the brown leather strap too. The rubber doesnt do it for me.

Working Waltham pocke****ch. The seconds hand has fallen off. Belonged to Mrs SSS's Grandfather. Not to sure of the history/age/vintage.
But nice nonetheless.

Seen that. There was some discussion about it over on Omega forums and the consensus was that as it was commissioned by an Italian jeweller and not Omega themselves it was probably worth closer to £30k. Turns out it sold in December for £41.5k so still a nice return for something that was previously cluttering up a drawer.

What do people make of some of the alternative Tudor models? Such as the 1926 (41mm)

I had a brief flirt with them but ultimately decided I wasn't so keen on them because of the hands. They seem good on paper though if not a tad soulless to me personally.

Omega have just announced the release of the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep. Three prototypes went down into Challenger Deep attached to the manipulator arm of a submersible in 2019, and survived twelve hours at 36,000 feet! The retail version is rated at 6000 metres/20,000 ft water resistance! Should survive a shower, or snorkelling off the coast, then… 🤣

That Ultra Deep is absolutely lovely. I have no need of something that waterproof like 99.99% of people but would still buy one if I could afford it! (never say never though 😉 )

I'm after some advice please, particularly relating to Seiko 5 owners.
I bought a modded one from Yobokies almost 10 years ago, paid extra for a sapphire crystal face as I'm a bit clumsy at times giving it a scrape/smack on the desk when working, and have been reasonably pleased with it apart from the fact it has been losing at least 2 mins per week despite being worn all the time.

This was up until the start of lockdown and now its losing almost 5 mins per week.
Is this typical of Seiko 5s?
Is there anywhere that economically repairs them?
Or should I be looking at something else?
I read good reviews of Citizen Eco drive for time keeping but they don't appear to come with sapphire crystal faces and some say they scratch easy.

If its uneconomical to repair what would you recommend for less than £150, preferably less than £100 which is similar to this if possible with white numerals on a black background.
https://www.theyobokies.com/?mod=product&sec=item&task=detail&id=563

Thanks

After 10 years it'll be due a service, although with a cheap movement it'll be cheaper to just replace the movement.

There are instructions on YouTube if you're willing to have a go yourself, it's not too difficult just the small size of everything makes a bit of a challenge. Any proper jeweler would do it or there are people on eBay who offer it for about £100, or did when I last looked.

@Bullet - exactly my thoughts too; I mean I can’t even bloody swim, but it’s just all the engineering that’s gone into producing a watch that can survive at the bottom of Challenger Deep - one actually spent five days down there after the ROV broke down and had to be left behind and retrieved later. I’ve just checked the pressure down there, it’s 1,086 bar, 15,750psi!

Wearing it in the shower, not a problem. 😁

Dunno. I’ve got a pretty powerful shower. The massage settings would probably invalidate the warranty. 😉

It even looks nice though.

Surely no one’s ever going to be wearing a watch that’s exposed to that kind of pressure - the watch would survive, but they’d be long dead ☠️

Hiya,

Whilst we are on Watches. Absolute bargain for last years Garmin Fenix:

https://www.runningxpert.com/en/garmin-fenix-6x-pro-194547.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIs77cgd3F9gIV84BQBh0r7QA-EAYYASABEgIGYvD_BwE

I don't need the touchscreen but mapping and music would be cool and NFC payments.
My Fenix 3 is being retired to sproggit to use.

Bit of advice from the STW Watcherati please.
Visting my parents and noticed the auld man wearing a nice looking watch I haven't seen before. Usually wears a Casio G-Shock I bought him in a PX.
Turns out it's an Omega Chronostop Geneve his parents bought him @1968 in Germany along with another two for his brothers.
It's still in good nick and he says it keeps good time after being in a drawer for god knows how long.
Anyhoo, if it requires a service could you recommend a company/individual please?

Ta in advance.

@CountZero

Omega have just announced the release of the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep

That’s lovely, completely out of my price range and I’ve no idea why I’d ever need a watch that can survive to those depths. But lovely none the less.

And prompted by someone’s post a few pages ago about some black edition seiko dive watches, this popped up at a hard to resist price on another forum I’m on. Got it today and really like it and it looks unworn.

I am going to have to sell at least two now, with two new recent ones (to me anyway). Thankfully I do like this new black turtle, as I now have no need to spend on one of the new seiko black edition dive watches and I’ve saved myself a grand.

I like that ^^

I have a question; I know your not supposed to get leather straps wet, but what happens if you do, and does it matter if you don't have an affinity with the strap?

I get pissed off having to take watches on/off when showering but have two I like to keep on leather straps.

It's just the leather isn't water proof so it damages it, just like sweat does. You can undo/prevent/limit the damage through regular treatment with hide food to replenish the oils in the leather, just like treating a pair of boots.

Well that's annoying. Everyone has to have a 5600/5610 in their collection right? And everyone raves about them.

So I bought on from the classifieds at a price I considered good ( no issues with the seller or the watch at all btw!) received it the this morning, put it on and...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/kryton1957/51951103747/in/dateposted/

...discovered I don't like it. I've no idea why, I must be in a minority pool of people how bloody annoying. I guess its onto eBay...
