I have type II and really miss Haribo, humbugs, chocolate limes etc.. There are some sugar free sweets available but they are pretty disappointing in the main (although a massive improvement on those available in the 70s and 80s so I'm told).

Anyhoo - last week, Mrs. S came home clutching a bag of sugar free Chupa Chups, the little fruit flavoured lollipops with the impenetrable wrapper. A few minutes with a thermic lance and I was in.

Not bad at tall. The cherry ones are very pleasant. So I got stuck in and ate four in an hour.

I checked my calendar. Not booked in for a colonoscopy so why did I feel like I'd had a MOVIPREP / Picolax cocktail?

Fortunately my home office is about 2m from le salon de bog.

Oooooof. Blash. Fwutter.

Over 1 kg lighter in less than a second. Full on hardback book / pond interface sound effects and there I was, a bit tired and bewildered.

A lesson learned and I think I now know that the wrapper is something of a deterrent in disguise!

Take care.

😀

Xylitol will do that to you. It's in sugar-free chewing gum too.

Yeh i have the same issue with any sweetners, I seem particularly sensitive to them. Makes it a pain at times now with so much 'no added sugar' stuff about which translates as full of nightmare (for me) sweetners.

I knew what this would be about....

By the way, if you look at the carb count on say Polo's vs sugar free, they have the same number of carbs, so other than the 'sh1ts, no point having them. Sugar free stuff often has similar carbs in.

Son's a T1.

Bit like those fat free crisps that were out years ago. Low calorie and explosive farts.

What's not to like?

Here's a decent article with the history of the 'fat free' crisps.

Here is a less nice, more s&&ty (😜) source of anecdotes.

Just be careful leaving anything with xylitol in (sweets, chewing gum etc) lying round where a dog could get it - it’s massively poisonous to dogs which kind of makes you wonder whether it’s any good for us.

You could say the same of chocolate. Last I looked, most of us aren't dogs.
