Can you fine people offer some recommendations please? Doesn't need to be anything too hardcore but they must be stable as I'll have my one year old in a rucksack on my back.

Firstly the obligatory "buy what fits from a good independent" post, if you're in the midlands Lockwoods in Leamington are very good.

I've got a pair of Zamberlan Cristallo GTX which I like, they fit me well are stable but are not too heavy. They're worth looking at but they may not fit your feet.

Agreed with the fitment thing. the other thing i would say is nowerdays they are all overpriced crap. I used to have some proper old school leather ones for years. They were tough and when it came to replacing them tried some of the scarpa (didnt fit) the berghouse ones (the ones i ended up with) are really too soft imo and dont offer enough support for my weedy ankles.
