We're up against 3 other, unknown, offers and are in a worse situation as ours has only gone on the market today. The others have either sold or don't have property to sell.

Not a chance your offer will be accepted, if the estate agent is actually telling the truth and there are other bidders. You will however have better chances once you have a sale agreed on your property.
I had an offer on a house accepted even there were 3 others after it and one had put in a higher offer. Their houses had only just gone on the market though, so I was in a better position to complete promptly. Luckily that made all the difference.
