I have some videos that I filmed on my camera that I have tried to send to my mate by e-mail ,but Gmail says they are to large to send ,is there any procedure that I can do to shrink them and how would I do that.
The biggest file is 52.9mb and its an mpeg video.

yes reencode them at a lower bit rate
you could use handbrake and the x264 encoder for instance. The quality will be reduced, but as h264 is such an efficient encoder (especially if you select 'high profile' on the preset thingy at the side of the window).
You can then choose a target file size on the video tab and it will try and squeeze the video file down to that size
