My son got a gopro for christmas and am looking for some (preferably free) software for him to edit on, he tells me the gopro one only lets you do a minute or so and it seems microsoft has withdrawn movie maker .. any reccomendations

Nope, the GoPro studio lets you edit movies of any length, it's not limited to 1 minute. He may be referring to the auto-movie function (or whatever it's called, where you can use a template and then fill in your own movie clips) but if you are editing form scratch then there's no time limit.
I find GoPro studio is decent enough for basic movies but is quite buggy and can crash a lot so save as you are editing.
Top tip; disable the auto-save function as this seems to contribute to a lot of the crashes.
e.g. this vid was edited on GoPro Studio, it even features me and the old lady in bed!
