Great manager or dodgy geezer? Only one loss in 23 games as England coach.
There I was rubbing my hands thinking this was about the other Venables...
He couldn't come back even if they wanted him due his business dealings.
It's worth remembering that he only took charge of 5 competitive games. We drew 3, losing one on pens, and won 2. One of those, the 4-1 defeat of Holland remains the best England performance I've ever seen and the 2-0 defeat of Scotland is second only to the defeat of Argentina in 2002 in terms of my favourite England moments.
So, all in all, he had some very high water marks but had far too short a reign to judge it objectively.
His record at Leeds United goes a long way to disproving the theory that managers with international experience do well at club level.
The FA would have re-hired him long ago if not for the tabloids who would destroy him in a heartbeat with what they've got on him. Bloody good manager.
Too be fair, his time at Leeds was while they were falling to bits and selling player from under him.
He forced Olly Dacourt out...I rated him before then but he was really found out
Better manager than singer, too many fingers in too many pies to keep the job permanently.
The other Venables would make for a much more lively debate. Wonder how long he'll go back to prison for....
