I know there's a number of vegans on STW so this seems a good place to ask. I would like to make vegan Yorkshire puddings as I have a friend coming for dinner on Sunday. Any recipies or tips from the STW minds? My non-vegan puds are pretty good and I'd like to achieve a similar standard but without the dairy ingredients.

I don't know about the batter but we used coconut oil instead of tallow for the cooking the other day, worked well!!

Tricky one, that. Watching with interest. The milk is probably readily substitutable, no idea what you'd do instead of eggs.

Sorry, I've added nothing to this discussion have I.

Ah, yes I can, Trex works well in place of lard.

I doubt whether you'll achieve a similar standard without eggs and milk, yorkshires are fairly simple beasts.

You could try soya milk or similar and some kind of raising agent like bicarb, although I expect it will taste a bit like a fried scone.

Other vegan egg substitutes include: 1/4 cup silken tofu blended until completely smooth, 1/4 cup mashed banana, and 1/4 soy or coconut yogurt. These options are great for binding, but I really like flax and chia for all of the good fats they lend to the egg replacement as well

google fu?

I had a google but like most things in life, hearing from non-professionals about their triumphs and failures is more interesting.

Although I am very interested by the mashed banana idea. I feel some experimentation is in order.

vegan yorkshire puddings

Will need a new name cos they're not going to be Yorkshire Puddings anymore are they?

Yes, wasn't suggesting you shouldn't ask.

I may try the nana ones or you could use self raising flour dont the eggs make them rise?

Afraid this is one of the few things I never cracked in my vegan years. Tried everything - commercial egg substitutes, various flour types (soya, chick pea) mixed with SR flour, cider vinegar (that went particularly badly), but I could just never get them to work. If you don't mind the sweetness though, banana could be the way forward, always worked a treat for vegan pancakes. I wish you luck!

I may scrap the Yorkshires and make pancakes for dessert instead.

Just make them as you make them, might do the vegan a favour by injecting some protein and flavour into their life....

Just asked someone who relatively recently caught veganitus (from his girlfriend) who I remember used to love Yorkshire puddings.

Apparently he is yet to find anything close, the bbc recipe apparently tastes ok and absorbs the veggy gravy but are NOT Yorkshire puddings

Just over an hour this time. I think we're growing as a forum. How long before someone mentions bacon* do we think?

aquafaba. this is the holy grail of vegan yorkshire pudding ingredients.
it is basically the liquid from a can of chickpeas, and can be pretty much used as a direct replacement for eggs in your regular recipe. it's seriously miraculous stuff. honestly, just google it and take your pick from the results...

So you want to make Yorkshires without two of the three ingredients required? Good luck with that.

Next up - vegetarian fillet steak...

I just made a batter mix and cooked that- ie dont add egg ad use non dairy milk - then again when i did it i had not eaten a yorkshire pudding for 25 years anyway - which was good enough for me of not for a non vegan
I did also make really small ones so you did not need to worry about it binding together

Xherbivorex nails it though if you want a proper egg replacement

You want to make Yorkshires by removing 2 of the 3 ingredients? I say good luck to you vegans but it might be worth finding something else as a substitute.

Have done pancakes many times, yet not yorkshire puds.

My main goto for tasty, creamy fat alternatives has been canned coconut milk/cream. Super-versatile. Egg replacement is a little trickier but we get eggs from happy chickens down the lane 🙂

Intrigued about 'aquafaba' now...STW does it again! Mayonnaise plans. Shop-bought vegan mayo is proving expensive amd it'll be great to not throw chickpea water away. Was only thinking the other day that cooking dried beans on our (cheapo electric hob) cooker is a major false economy as the electricity costs many times more than pre-cooked canned beans.

OP I'm supposing you've tried BBC good food vegan Yorkshire puddings?

There're a few comments

you're 'just' making a batter, right?

So, flour, salt, and a dribble of water until you have a batter mix, then add some heated oil, and mix well. perhaps rested in the fridge for a bit before you want to use it. make individual ones rather than large ones. You could use a bit of beer instead of water for flavour

That's all fine and dandy but what the hell do you do with the leftover chick peas?
Dogs and cats won't touch them, they're definitely unfit for human consumption and it seems very wasteful to just throw them away

^ daal.

Daal is delicious.

Chana masala too. Scooped up with warm chapatis.

I get the UK-meat-centric 'beans/veg/salad' are 'unfit food' jokes etc, but as a food-lover I must defend good tasting food!

What to do with chickpeas??? Millions of things, delicious food. India has loads of recipes: daal is an obvious choice, lots of other curries, Spain has the Madrid classic "cocido", head up north for a stew cooked up with cod and spinach, or maybe a moroccan inspired salad?

Just explain to them they are wrong and serve proper Yorkshire puds.

spinach

Spinach? Are you joking? What self-respecting person would eat 'spinach'? Not even cockroaches will eat that shit.

Now, bacon dipped in chocolate ...

I tried the BBC recipe and it turned out pretty well, I'd cook them again. They weren't like "proper" Yorkshires but they definitely added to the meal. My guest polished hers off, along with a large slice of vegan chocolate cake that I'd baked. I'd say dinner earned me quite a few points.

Houmous?

Fajitas surely?

Though I don't get this substitution nonsense. Either eat it or don't but why waste time faffing about trying to make a (usually) poor imitation? There's a whole world of food out there to choose from...

Houmous?

Garlic? Our parents voted for [s]Brexit[/s] tacky tabloid portmanteau because of stuff like chickpeas and garlic, and now you mix the two together? Are you having a laugh?

No. I have a poor sense of houmous.

I doubt vegan Yorkshire puds would be any good without the eggs and milk, I'd just serve the roast beef without them.
