Two armed men have taken hostages in a Turkish restaurant in the capital of Catalonia after a crash, according to local media.

Been in Barcelona for the last 11 days on holiday with my wife and two teenage daughters. Flew home today, was on Las Ramblas this morning. My wife and daughters were mooching about exactly where the attack happened yesterday afternoon, I'd gone back to the apartment to drink beer in the cool tub. Bloody scary stuff

Thoughts to all those involved and hope the number of fatalities doesn't rise.

My BiL & SiL & niece & nephew are there at the moment. Right in the middle of it. They were told to hide indoors until given the all clear. Last we heard they were taking refuge in a cafe.

I have seen a video of scenes inside the Kosher restaurant on lock-down. No casualties visible. FWIW it took the mainstream media a YEAR to admit Chouabily''s original target was a Jewish school not the Supermarket. The mainstream media have never reported that the Bataclan is a Jewish owned business.

My BiL & SiL are all safe and heading back to their hotel. Their coach was waiting for two people who were missing, but finally turned up. We can breathe again now. They are due to travel back on Wednesday, can't come soon enough.

I would like to point out that Maajid Nawaz is currently presenting the 10am-1pm weekday show on LBC and in my view it is very worth listening to - I find him very reasoned and fair - and he will surely be discussing this incident.

Whereas a lot of the other presenters seems to feed on the same type of reactionary stuff as the tabloids use to get their readers, he is very forthright with his views and doesn't pussy-foot around with PC stuff - equally hammering the mistaken views of both sides - and he really seems to know, and critisize where appropriate, his religion and, having been a former extremist, also has valid viewpoints there.

I was in Barcelone ealrier this year and in Cambrils just last week.

Both are such soft targets, people will be familiar with Las Ramblas and Cambrils is similar in having a long boulevard packed with families and children late into the evening.

I'm really not sure what the answer is when these attacks as well as being abhorent themselves seem likely to further drive a wedge between communities.

Personally I think its time for some real open questions about the root causes including the Wests involvement in Arab countries but also Muslim integration into Western countires.

Very sad to be waking up to hear of the second attack at Cambrils.

Whilst we can all understand knee jerk reactions, to such upsetting incidents, the solution is not to behave like them.
It will not bring us closer to peace and will only "justify" them and make us as bad as them.

These situations are terrible and its disturbing to see them more and more.

And do what? What are you then going to do with the thousands of people who's ID you've logged? Put them under 24-hour surveillance? Where are you going to get the manpower and resources to do that then?

Regarding dealing with the issue, fighting fire with fire merely gives the terrorist what they want. As Jim Jefferies said in his stand up about Paris, killing a load of innocents isn't their end game - they want to foster hate & terror. To that end, using a vehicle to kill a load of people does exactly what they want. How many vans do you pass on the way to work every morning? Potentially a terror attack in waiting yeah?

It's rare that I agree with Jamby in any of his posts but I do agree with the above - we have the technology to infiltrate attacks before they happen and I think more needs to be done with this. Sentiment analysis/big data mining is something I do a lot of at work and could be used extensively here to determine the individuals before attacks happen. Using their tactics to defeat them is exactly what they want.

Death and murder is the only motivation of the individual Islamist or group of Islamists.
