MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
All my life I've used my middle name, but always thought I ought to use my first name for anything official.
Is there any reason I can't just use my middle name even for official stuff, after all its still my official name, just not my first name as it appears on my passport / birth certificate / driving licence.
you can legally change your name online 'officially' for about £20.
Why is your middle name 'Pieface', anyway?
What do you mean by "official" anyway?
FWIW John is my middle name and it bugs me when people who don't know me use my first name
if you live in scotland, you can just use whatever name you want. I think you need a deed poll if you're in england shire tho
The name on official documents is first name / middle name / surname. I alwsy feel that when applying for jobs, registering for races (where insurance is concerned) i need to give my full name, but everyone knows me by my middle name.
If I were to be pulled by the police and gave my middel name, would it matter as on insurance they have a record of my middle name.
More often than not using my first name casues more confusion than anything else.

You would most likely be asked for your full name so would need to give both your first and your middle name.
If you are committed to the middle name as the name you will be known as then change it officially and then you don't need to worry about anything unexpected.
A friend of mine did the same as you - was known since childhood by her middle name. Took a new job and on her first day at work found her work ID, stationary all with her first name. The employer had also put out press releases and literature with her first name on too. There wasn't really any way to get the cat back in the bag. It compelled her to change names effectively and now she goes by her first name. But for quite a few years there was an awkward transition where her friends and extended family knew her by one name, colleagues, newer friends and even her husband (who she met through the new job) knew her by another.
Apart from the job scenario / personalised stationery, if I wasn't asked for my full name and just wnet by my given name, that wouldn't be dodgy (even if it ended up being used in an official context) as its still a lawful name, just not my first name.
Are you planning the perfect crime? 😆
Or have you already committed it? Is Pieface the new Canoe Man? Or even the old Canoe Man?
I've also always used my middle name.. When I asked my parents why they used my middle name instead of my first name they said 'because your father has the same first name and we'd get confused'. 😯
When I suggested they could have simply put the names the other way round from the start I got a blank stare. Dead clever my parents 🙄
Elzo - thats pretty much the same as me, except I have 2 uncles with the same name as my first. However my Dad use his middle name too, but no-one else has his first name 😕

girl i know changed her name whilst drunk. woke up the next morning & found the confirmation inbox! 😯
Same here I go by my middle name, it's never caused any problems but when using anything for credit I use my full name. I have no problem with anyone who doesn't know automatically calling me James as that's what often shows up and they know different. I'll answer to it too as well it's also my name.
Dealing with the Police reasonable regular to give statements that can go to corners or high court they quite happy to use the name you're known by.
Same here and yes it causes some confusion.
However when I got married I changed my surname to my new husband's name and got rid of my unused first name to the middle (which is the one I've always been called), computer said NO! What a complete kerfuffle that caused.
