i know, I've always wondered if it actually costs the phone companies anything for us to download data?

i'm with 3 and a get a gb, which is more than enough tbh, just do all your big downloads on wifi.

Jus remove the "un" from 1st word and prefix it to the 4th word and you have the answer.

Yes, in terms of the statement, it's very wrong. In real terms, I never get close to mine each month.

Firstly, yes, that statement is misleading.

Generally, fair usage means there isn't a hard cap, but if you use much more than the fair usage amount they might slow or restrict your service. It's used to control the small % of people who use 10's of GB, but could be used to restict others if there are capacity problems in the core network.

As for it costing the network operators - what do you think pays for the installation and running of the network? Could it be the charging of customers?

Mobile networks spend 100s of millions on their networks each year. 200-300 million isn't unusual.

Im with O2 and they say unlimited means unlimited (to a point), they dont have a download limit but told me they do limit you if you really take the mick, not sure at what point they step in though.

They were quite clear that it was a cap when I renewed and moved onto an iPhone 4

Its really very easy to get over 1GB a month, i used to get that in a week. Simply listen to music either on internet radio or LastFM, something these phones are essentially designed to do, and your classed as an 'unfair user'. Basically the phone companies are relying on most of you using your incredibly expensive phone for basic things like email and occasional internet, and are now complaining when more and more folks start using them to their full potential.

I'm with 02 and i run out of data every month without fail. 500mb last about 3 weeks then i get a reduced speed until the next month.

I've a sneaking suspicion that the main reason for the cap is to stop you from tethering your phone to a PC and using it as your primary Internet connection, when they'd rather charge you again for that.

Likewise. I've hit O2's 500MB limit every month since they introduced it!

Last conversation about data allowances that I had with O2, who I've been with for ten years, went along the lines of,

"... and we'll move you onto the new improved tariff with 500Mb of data..."

"no, you'll be providing me with a PAC number"

"... we'll leave it as it is for now then shall we?"

I get several jobs a month to provide additional optic fibre to existing cellsites or new fibre to new cell sites. The 3G service requires a high density of smaller 'green cab and a lamp post' style cellsites, unlike the older 2G which can run off one huge mast in a fenced compound and cover a larger area.

I don't agree with the miss-leading 'unlimited but subject to fair use' statements but there is obviously a cost associated with the exponential growth of data use. Mainly a fixed cost of investment in new infrastructure but I assume there is a smaller cost per Mb.
