Time will tell how things will pan out.

In the meantime, I think it will be a freezing winter if price of gas, due to Ukraine/Russia War, continues to increase.

Personally, I can't be arsed to read the news coz they are all the same. i.e. "We win you lose or you lose we win etc ..."

but for some reasons when it comes to the major wars affecting their motherland, they always won.

Strangely seems to involve massive losses, together with financial and/or military assistance from the West.

As if they care. They are Russians.

Yes, they got some of their technologies from the West so did Japan(since the time of Shogun).

It’s also irrelevant, as no-one is marching on Moscow. The only reason that was punted out there is to get a bite.

They have nuke otherwise they would be a walk over.

However, the West/NATO are generally very good at planning, technological advanced, very discipline etc but somehow this makes me think why the Russians are not that bothered or afraid yet.

... to get a bite.

Erh? No, I don't do that. Not me. Waste of time. Life is too short etc.

@kimbers

Obviously pinch of salt and could just be a handful of soldiers, but it seems news of Kharkiv is undermining russian morale

That rumour is still doing the rounds. US General Ben Hodges on the Mriya Report allegedly confirming.

There seems to be a mutiny brewing in the political ranks among Putin's municipal deputies. A petition calling for his resignation, originally signed by 19, now 30.

Do they want him gone to stop the war, or install someone they think will be a better military tactician so it can be turned around/won?

I think we assume the former, but I'd like to be reassured.

I don’t think there’ll be a good outcome, it’s more a case of hoping for the least worst.

A defeat for Russia can easily lead to a rise in bitter ultra nationalism. Probably why Poland is eyeing up 500 Himars, probably had enough of being invaded by lunatic neighbours.

Putin has hollowed out of the institutions needed to support a democracy- free press, impartial judiciary, credible political opppsition etc. If he goes then another autocratic regime will take his place, as Russia is simply not capable of being anything else in it's current state. It would take a very (very!) special set of events to allow the re-installation of the workings needed for a tenable democracy

I suspect it will be this now that they know that they have too many fat salaried generals that are there for payroll only (hence they are not bothered when they are killed etc), and if pride of their nation takes precedent then the next person will be much competent than Putin.

Jesus christ on a hard tail …I am just going to say you either eat too much shit food or you are really messed in the head and cannot cope with real life.Possibly no experience of it, too young etc etc .Brain washed to think for yourself , so you start saying pathetic things like “Bot” .Have a word with yourself!

Well that's me told. I did have a very strange tea of haloumi and onion bahjis followed by blackberry and apple crumble.  Maybe that explains Why I'm 'brainwashed' and 'can't cope with real life'.  Makes you think....

Mate you have a very odd way of writing, that has a passing resemblance to some clever AI posts we've had on here before.  That and your low post count before diving into contentious posts made me suspicious. I now  concede from your latest shouty, abusive diatribe that you may not be a bot, even if you have the social skills of one.

They are too deep into the war so asking Putin to stop the war can be suicidal.
Overthrowing him comes at at risk unless they are absolutely certain.
Convincing him it is a bad war can only work if there are some good concessions to be had.
Alternatively is to let the nature takes it course on their generals. i.e. let the generals get filter out by their own failure with their lives.

Therefore, pressure Putin to get "better" generals might be the least risky option of all the above.

English is Not my 1st language and took me something to catch up to this level. I have seen some senior people from Europe who speak much poorer English than I do.

Also I am being me, honest, there is NO point in trying to trick, troll or pretend to be someone else.

Just came here to post that

If Russia aren't deploying any more troops then there could be a collapse in Russian lines all the way to Crimea!
And plenty more Ru troops surrendering

What is worrying is that Russia seems to be targeting more & more civilian infrastructure instead

Easy to justify sadly, pushing the line that UKR troops are using it, therefore making it a legitimate military target.

Can you imagine a great nation like Russia losing or being defeated to take terms from Ukraine?

Even if Putin is toppled do you think Russia as a nation will bow to Ukraine or the West?

The worst case scenario is when Russia is on the verge of total collapse and if they are I am going to prepare to find ways to survive starvation.

Yes. Yes I can.

I can't.

Two reasons:

1. Russian collapse means central Asia would be distabilised and that is not good for their Islamic leaders and I suspect they will come to Russian aid.

2. Culturally they are very different from the West and by the time you stretch to Asia you will be threat to China and they would not allow that.

p/s: This one I don't really know but some so called far east analysts "predicted" that Russia will lose most of their battles for sometime to come, but eventually will win the war i.e. the great war meaning right up to your door step (I can see this possibility if their pride and dignity are strong).

Neither is a bot. Chewkw is an opinionated guy who likes to play devil's advocate. Often he isn't necessarily saying that he supports the real politik views that he promotes, more that he wants people to see and understand differing viewpoints. For what it's worth, some of those on here seem to take pleasure in constantly insulting and criticising him for the crime of seeing things differently.

Too Bloody Old works a solid 9-5 out of some grey building in St Petersburg. He's not a bot and he's certainly not a posh English man. Grammar, syntax, spelling are too mixed up. Even the rhythm of what he says doesn't compute. However he's not bad and if his boss is reading this, go easy on him, he's tried hard. Even going so far as to start a thread about Swinley as cover. I suppose we should all be pleased that we've attracted attention from the 'farm'.

In other news I recommend a look at the Al Jazeera website. Some really good analysis/features. Up to date too.

Rumours of surrender in Kherson are getting louder..

how did we get from a hypothetical Russia being defeated by Ukraine on Ukrainian territory to 'you' (do you mean me, Ukraine, the West) moving to to Asia and threatening China?  That's some leap and not what we were talking about.

You do shift the goal posts and flit from one concept to a radically different one which makes debating with you feel a bit random and chaotic, to say the least!

The two reasons Chewkw just gave are reasonable. Russia has borders to its South and East too, what happens on their western front will inevitably have and effect on its other fronts.

Also, the astonishing offensive in Kharliv has demonstrably changed the narrative in Russia.

Demands for Putin's resignation are hitting his desk but regardless of wether those demands are coming from hawks or doves, both sides will have the reputation of Russia foremost in their minds.

Okay, a quick "language" guide. In my part of the world when we speak "English" and when we use "You" it does not mean you as an individual specifically. It is just the way we speak or write. Therefore, NOT you as in 'you'. In the current thread it is referring to the West/Nato/EU.

Well judging from some of the discussion here there seem to be imminent "collapse/defeat" of the Russian force or even the Putin. Now if Putin is gone there will be a vacuum to be filled (after their defeat) and with limited military capabilities left, they have to take terms from the victors. Meaning NATO/West will then install or use Russia as a puppet state to boarder China. That will be a threat.

I know I might be jumping around but somehow I really cannot see the evidence provided that convince me there is progression at all. Winning and losing battles is the norm in all wars.

As Sun Tze once said: There is always time to retreat.

I'm not sure about Islamic leaders coming to Russia's aid

They are more likely to see it as an opportunity to exploit the chaos themselves

From what we've seen it's pretty clear that the Ukrainian armed forces have taken the Russians by surprise. I don't think that it'll be enough to do for Putin's leadership (yet), but the sheer speed of Ukraine's forces retaking theit territory is something to behold.

Countries in Central Asia are predominantly Islam even when their leaders do not behave like a true Muslim, they run the country like a "kingdom" at will. With the West (NATO as vehicle) emphasizing on democracy and human rights, that will have an effect on their power based and a threat to their "rights" to rule or their way of life. Putin is no threat to their leadership and support them. If Putin goes those leaders will be told to behave and they don't enjoy that.

Reports of clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Historically, the Turks (Ottoman) started the whole affairs there but never concluded it.

^^ Other than going the full monty and actually declaring a war, I suspect you are spot on. All he can do is move the ever dwindling pawns around the board.

Still going to be a bloody rough winter for Ukraine. I don't see Putin doing a U turn anytime soon. He doesn't care how many (of either nationality) he sends to the meat grinder.

Just Putin apologists huffing copium. If you go back to the start of this thread back in February it was full of claims that Ukraine should just surrender because Russian victory was inevitable. Not they're reduced to trying to distract from the reality that their boy is getting thrashed.

The really weird thing with the "how can we stop this war?" lefties in the West is that they completely dismiss Ukrainian agency in it all. Do they really think that Ukrainians will just accept a deal that they have no part in negotiating?

Anyway, on the subject of propaganda. Has anyone figured out the surrender/no more troops claims yet.

I mean, theyre both plausible, but also both plausible to be played on by Ukraine to demoralise.

who likes to play devil’s advocate

Sort of, if it was just that then fine. But there's a lot of wild distraction nonsense thrown in. Theres a lot of coincidence with messaging and timing from decidedly unambiguous outlets too which does not help.

Good point. Its not necessarily lefties tho and if the west stops supplying weapons the equation changes but I dont see Ukraine accepting losing territory even tho the current Ukrainian borders are a recent construct

According to a few of those (seemingly more reliable/informed) Twitterati, there's two reasons even if he did call out full scale war it wouldn't work.

1. There's seemingly open revolt among troops being asked to go to front line, and rumours of thousands starting to surrender or run away. What are you going to do, just have your general shoot thousands of them?

2. There isn't any kit left, there's no supply of food / clothes / basics needed. And let's not forget the overnight temperatures are dropping - in a couple of weeks the mud, cold and rain starts. Even if you had the bodies, you can't get them there and even if you did, they will be stood in t-shirt and jeans.

What do the 'stans have to offer? I think that's as likely as Syria coming to Russia's aid, Assad is reliant on his Russian guests who aren't showing any signs of wanting to leave for UKR

https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/exclusive-kazakhstan-start-oil-sales-via-azeri-pipeline-bypass-russia-2022-08-12/

Kazakhstan is expected to sell some of its crude oil through Azerbaijan's biggest oil pipeline from September, as the nation seeks alternatives to a route Russia threatened to shut, three sources familiar with the matter said.

Itll be a mixed bag in reality

At this point, it's impossible to tell what is Ukrainian psyops and what is fact. The Ukrainians apparently tracked all the Russian cellphones operating in Ukraine (i.e. Russian soldiers) and sent them a text message explaining how to surrender. The "reports" that large numbers of Russians are negotiating to surrender might be true, they might just be another attempt at demoralizing Russian troops. I hope the Russians do either surrender of flee, but best to not believe anything until it's confirmed.

Good point. Its not necessarily lefties tho

I agree, the left doesn't have a monopoly on bad takes about Ukraine. A pro Kremlin stance seems to be one thing many on the far left and far right agree on.

I think though that when @thols2 referenced 'how can we stop this war' he was referring to this event, which to be fair is organised by the left, includes no Ukrainian input on the panel but does include someone banned from entering Ukraine for his pro Kremlin views. I can imagine how enraged Ukrainians would be by this, as evidenced by some of the comments.

It'll be simpler if they flee because of the logistics involved in PoW processing, feeding, transporting, etc. There's enough to do with the logistics of dealing with the materiel left behind
Having said that it does make PoW swaps more problematic, especially as civilians have reportedly been moved to Russia

Rumours that putin has fled Moscow to his country retreat.

I think 'flee' is doing some very heavy lifting in that Link!

Maybe thats Putins new plan.

Blow all the infrastructure and then hand then thousands of POWs that ukraine now has to feed / heat and guard. I suppose if you are going to struggle to feed your own troops making them your enemies problem is probably a better gambit.

Wonder if ukraine could call on other states to house / help out with the POW's. Thats non-combative assistance

A lot of Ukrainian psyops with the surrender stuff, but there's probably plenty of Russians who want a way out

And with resupply lines from Belarus via Izyum now gone they will be worried
